It was an unbelievable game last night - the biggest comeback I've ever seen. When you have a two-legged affair like this, the days in between are your half-time team talk.

They should rename the play-offs 'the dramas' because anything can happen tonight, as it did last night.

I played golf this week and met three Bolton lads who were at the first leg. Two of them weren't coming tonight because they said Barnsley were the better team.

That shocked me to a certain extent, because I thought Bolton were coming into this tie with momentum and a manager who'd signed a new contract. The positive for them was they levelled the match and made it game on again.

Barnsley fans don't need reminding that two years ago they were in the play-offs in the division above, looking to return to the Premier League for the first time since their one-season stay in 1997-98.

They fell to a semi-final defeat by Steve Cooper's Swansea and things then fell apart to such an extent that they find themselves battling to go back up to the second tier.

Their last time in the play-offs in this league ended with Paul Heckingbottom leading them to Wembley glory back in 2016.

For Bolton, this is very much unchartered territory.

The Trotters' previous play-off campaign was in 2001. Back then Sam Allardyce's Wanderers claimed victory over David Moyes' Preston in the then Division One final.

    Whatever happened to them pair?

  4. A second night of penalty drama in South Yorkshire?published at 19:45 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

Barnsley in my opinion edged a fine-margin first leg, but clearly not on the scoresheet.

You’d imagine the game at a packed, raucous, Oakwell will be similar.

The Reds can take confidence from their excellent home record, a blip against Bolton in January aside, but being less wasteful in front of goal will be key against a Trotters side who surely aren’t going to be as wasteful in possession this time.

Have the Reds practised penalties? Yes.

  5. 'Barnsley have to keep calm'published at 19:42 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

We love a game like last night when everything seems to be chaos.

If they're going to get through this tonight, Barnsley have got to keep calm and make sure they don't give anything stupid away. Bolton are bringing a lot of fans and the atmosphere is going to be brilliant.

Barnsley play a positive style. It's not neanderthal football from the past where they launch the ball.

They look for positive passes with a purpose. The midfield three are a big part of that when Barnsley win the ball back. From there, it's "can we find our forwards?"

Michael Duff's programme notes are quite interesting.

They're bog standard to a certain extent - trying to rally the troops, in terms of the supporters - but about six paragraphs in, he says "our sole intention is to win the first half."

Well, hold on a second: there's another half and there might be extra time and penalties. You can win the first half but Bolton could win the second - or extra time, or penalties - and get to Wembley.

You don't want to go for 90 minutes. You might need to get to 120 or more. I understand that he wants to be on the front foot and try to get in front.

But Bolton have got more strings to their bow. They can play in a number of ways and their technical side will come through.

  7. More play-off magic in the South Yorkshire air?published at 19:37 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

They say lightning doesn't strike twice but could we be in for a second play-off classic in as many days in South Yorkshire?

Both managers said they expect this game to be much like Saturday's 1-1 first-leg draw at the University of Bolton Stadium.

If that's the case then, much like last night, we could be in for a long evening.

But if yesterday's epic encounter at Hillsborough has re-enforced anything, it's to expect the unexpected...

  8. How the Owls pulled off the biggest EFL play-off comebackpublished at 19:33 British Summer Time 19 May 2023

Recap: Sheff Wed 5-1 Peterborough (agg 5-5) - Sheff Wed win 5-3 on penalties

It all seemed well and truly over after Sheffield Wednesday were booed off the pitch by their fans after a chastening 4-0 defeat against Peterborough in their League One play-off first leg last Friday.

However, they stormed back at Hillsborough to win 5-1 on the night after extra time for an aggregate score of 5-5. That sent the tie to penalties - and they prevailed 5-3 from the spot.

Remarkably, prior to Thursday, no team in the English Football League play-offs had ever overcome a first-leg deficit of more than two goals.

So how did they do it, and where does it rank in terms of other great play-off comebacks?

    Hello again.

Tonight has a fair bit to live up to after Sheffield Wednesday reached the League One play-off final at Wembley thanks to their monumental comeback win against Peterborough.

Four goals down after the first leg, the Owls took it to penalties having scored five times against Darren Ferguson's side and won on spot-kicks at a raucous Hillsborough.

This evening, Barnsley and Bolton face off with their sights set on facing Wednesday at Wembley.

    Kick-off is coming soon.
