There is always pessimism in football and football supporters, you always fear the worst.

We always feared that after such a fantastic season that Notts would fall at the final hurdle - the play-offs - the hurdle they have fallen at in the past three seasons.

They led for a total of one minute in the four hours of football in the play-offs but they showed their battling instinct, they have shown their quality throughout the season.

But today and last week it was all about the mentality to not get beaten and that is what they have shown and they have got their reward.

Notts County are back in the Football League, they are the oldest professional football league club in the world and they reclaim their mantle.

Hopefully this is the first step of a few successful steps and this club is on an upward trajectory.

That was an absolute barn stormer of a National League playoff final between Chesterfield and Notts County.

They would have felt mightily aggrieved if they weren't promoted.

Notts County got that stroke of luck at the end of the day.

That's something to build on for next season for Chesterfield but hopefully Paul Cook will stay and guide them to automatic promotion rather than the heartache of a Wembley final.

Even in the penalty shootout, John Bostock had a penalty to win it with a penalty to spare but tried a panenka and hit the crossbar.

It was so typical of Notts to put everyone through the mill. Those players deserve everything they get for what they have done over 48 games this season.

They haven't been at their best today but in these sort of games it's all about the result and somehow they got the result because they don't know when they're beaten.

You have to feel for Chesterfield because they did everything they could today but Notts just would not be denied.

Notts County came agonisingly close to gaining automatic promotion to League Two this season.

They were narrowly outdone by Wrexham (we all know about them, don’t we?) toward the end of the season and finished just four points adrift of the top with an incredible 107 points.

It would have been a crushing blow if they missed out on promotion back to the English Football league today.

Wrexham co-owner Ryan Reynolds saw his side battle with Notts County for automatic promotion this season.

He's sent his congratulations following the Magpies' promotion.

There can only be one winner and it's the cruelest way of all, on penalties.

It's another season in the National League for Chesterfield unfortunately.

My word, Notts County put you through the mill and then some, but they never say die.

It's the cruelest of ways for Chesterfield to lose, but it's the most joyous, most unbelievable, most fantastical script that couldn't be written.

This is a Hollywood ending for Notts. They have got what they absolutely deserve.

For the neutral that was an unbelievable game.

Heartbreak for the Spireites who twice had the lead and looked in control for most of the game.
