Notts County manager Luke Williams is fiercely determined to take the club back to League Two and beyond

Notts County manager Luke Williams says his side want to "close the door" on the non-league chapter of the club's 161-year history.

"To win would mean we have accomplished the first step in what we hope is a longer journey," he said.

"From the very beginning that has been the idea.

"To get out of this division and not to put the breaks on, but to steam on forward.

"We have managed to convince ourselves that we can climb a huge mountain.

"It [the final] will be a huge clash between two very good teams for this level."

Chesterfield midfielder Oliver Banks will be hoping his club can slide into League Two with a win over Notts County in the National League promotion final today

Chesterfield could benefit from Notts County being National League promotion final favourites, says Spireites assistant manager Danny Webb.

"We go into the game as slight underdogs," he said ahead of today's trip to Wembley.

"And by all accounts they will have a few more supporters than us.

"In a way that works for us, because in every game this season we are favourites - as are Notts County and Wrexham - either home or away.

"Now whether that helps us, time will tell.

"We are coming up against a very good team, but we are also a very good team - so it will be a hell of a game for the neutrals."

Notts County striker Jodi Jones celebrates his goal in extra time that lifted the Magpies over Boreham Wood in their semi-final clash to book their trip to Wembley

Both Notts County and Chesterfield came through dramatic semi-final ties last weekend to punch their tickets to Wembley.

The Magpies needed extra time to overcome their semi-final opponent Boreham Wood.

Luke Williams' side were moments away from defeat but managed to score a 97th minute equaliser to force the game into extra time at 2-2.

And just seconds before the referee was to blow their whistle and send the game to anxiety-inducing penalties, substitute Jodi Jones fired a stunning left footed strike from outside the box into the net for the win.

The Spireites also needed extra time to beat Bromley in their semi-final after they conceded an injury time equaliser in the 99th minute.

But they wasted no time in despatching their opponents, who were down to 10 men, when striker Liam Mandeville put the game to bed in the first half of extra time when he uncorked a screwball strike from 18 yards out that fizzed into the back of the net, to seal the 3-2 win.

  17. Hello and welcomepublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 13 May 2023

Chesterfield v Notts County (15:30 BST)

    No time for pleasantries.

If you are here you are obviously looking for a bit of excitement, ecstasy, pain and despair.

Those feelings won't necessarily come in that order and if you're lucky you might not feel some of those emotions at all.

Only one team, either Notts County or Chesterfield, can secure promotion to League Two and back to the English Football League today.

That one ticket is within touching distance for both sides who've shed blood, sweat and tears to be at Wembley.

Prepare yourselves...this is going to be a white knuckle ride.
