Edoardo Bove's second-half goal gave Jose Mourinho's Roma the advantage over Bayer Leverkusen after the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

The 20-year-old passed into the bottom corner after Tammy Abraham's shot was saved to score his first European goal.

Leverkusen's best chance saw Florian Wirtz drag wide in the sixth minute.

They had a chance to equalise in the 86th minute but Jeremie Frimpong's effort after a mistake by Rui Patricio was blocked.

Federico Gatti scored a 97th-minute equaliser to earn Juventus a draw against Sevilla in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final.

Gatti headed in from two yards after Paul Pogba superbly kept the ball in as a Danilo header was set to drift wide.

It cancelled out Youssef En-Nesyri's 26th-minute goal, with the striker stroking in Lucas Ocampos' cross.

Sevilla dominated the game for large periods but were left to rue missed chances by En-Nesyri and Ocampos.

Juventus were lacklustre for most of the game, with Gatti's header only their second effort on target in the game.

Fans are continuing to debate where Trent Alexander-Arnold will operate for Liverpool next season, after his recent deployment in a hybrid right-back/midfielder role.

The 24-year-old has been used as a full-back when defending, but drifted into midfield when his side are in possession. It's led to an upturn in Liverpool's results, and his own creative output - however, there have been question marks about whether the space he vacates would be easily exploited by top sides.

In our poll (as of 09:40 BST on 12 May), only 4% of you believe the England international will return to the traditional right-back position next season.

Some 42% of people think Jurgen Klopp will continue to use him in the hybrid role.

But 54% of those who participated actually think Alexander-Arnold will be converted into an out-and-out midfielder next season, with a different player filling the right-back role.

  8. Agents' Fifa rule blocking bid dismissedpublished at 11:37 British Summer Time 12 May 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

There was an interesting development around Fifas new rules for agents earlier this week.

Agents are now required to take an exam in what Fifa say is the start of an attempt to clean the industry up.

The move has led to a furious reaction from the Association of Football Agents, with industry heavyweights Jorge Mendes and Jonathan Barnett amongst those claiming Fifa does not understand their work.

They vowed to take the matter to court and this week sought an injunction blocking Fifa's new rules.

However, this attempt was thrown out pending a European Courts of Justice ruling about whether governing bodies such as Fifa and Uefa are anti competitive.

I suspect this is the start of a major battle but the first skirmish has gone Fifa's way.

Here is a reminder of where Newcastle stand - third in the Premier League with four matches remaining.

After Saturday's match at Leeds, Newcastle host Brighton (18 May) and Leicester (22 May) before their final game of the season at Chelsea (28 May).

Newcastle will, of course, qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 20 years if they finish in the top four.

  15. 'We’re looking forward to the challenges ahead'published at 11:08 British Summer Time 12 May 2023

Leeds v Newcastle (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Newcastle United

A final word from Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on embracing the games ahead as they bid for Champions League qualification: “We’re excited, that has to be our emotion. We’re looking forward to the challenges ahead, I don’t feel the players are daunted by it. I’ve seen them train this week, again it’s been very good and the players seem mentally in a good head space. We’re approaching it with a view of what we can achieve, rather than worrying about any consequences.”

  16. 'You can see the impact Allardyce has had'published at 11:04 British Summer Time 12 May 2023

Leeds v Newcastle (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Newcastle United

More from Newcastle boss Eddie Howe on facing Leeds in Sam Allardyce's first home match as manager: “We know it’s going to be a great occasion and a great atmosphere. Elland Road’s a brilliant place to play but we need to be ready for what’s going to come. It’s going to be a really important start to the game, those first 15-20 minutes will have a huge impact on what’s going to happen.”

On Allardyce: “We saw enough [in the defeat at Manchester City] to say that’s going to be what Sam’s going to give the team - clear organisation, clear structure and a definite philosophy in and out of possession. Watching it back, you can see the impact he’s had in a short period of time.”

  17. Another Allardyce win against Newcastle?published at 10:57 British Summer Time 12 May 2023

    • Leeds have failed to score in their last two Premier League games against Newcastle, last going three in a row between April 1996 and January 1997.
    • Newcastle have won four of their last five away league games (L1), as many as their first 12 on the road this season (D6 L2). The Magpies have eight away Premier League wins this season overall, last enjoying more on their travels in a top-flight campaign in 2001-02 (9).
    • Leeds manager Sam Allardyce has won more Premier League matches against Newcastle United than any other side (13). He’s won his first home Premier League game in charge of five of his previous eight clubs (D1 L2), one of which was a 3-0 win over Newcastle in October 2015 with Sunderland.
    • Since recording 12 clean sheets in their first 20 Premier League games this season, Newcastle have only kept one in their last 14, and none in their last seven overall. In fact, since the start of February, only Leicester (0) have fewer Premier League clean sheets than the Magpies (1).
  18. 'We were looking for a spark'published at 10:54 British Summer Time 12 May 2023

Leeds v Newcastle (Sat, 12:30 BST)

    Newcastle United

Back to Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, who has been speaking about last season’s victory at Leeds, which ended a nightmare start to the club's campaign that included just one win in 22 matches in all competitions.

The 1-0 win at Elland Road, which came on 22 January, was just a second in 11 games under Eddie Howe following his appointment on 8 November, 2021, as replacement for Steve Bruce.

Howe said: “I don't think you realise at the time how important certain victories are. It was unclear then what was going to happen beyond that game.

"After that game, we went to Saudi Arabia for a really important period of time where we could really consolidate our messages to the players, but we needed to do it off the back of a win, we were looking for a spark.

"I think it gave everyone confidence and renewed belief that we could stay up. I thought it was one of our best performances at that stage, we defended really well and Jonjo scored a huge goal for us. We look back now, following what's happened, and say that was really the turning point.”

  20. 'I know that weeks ago, it was completely out of sight'published at 10:48 British Summer Time 12 May 2023

Leicester v Liverpool (Mon, 20:00 BST)

    Liverpool

A final word from Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, who has been speaking about drawing on past achievements - including their epic semi-final comeback against Barcelona at Anfield in 2019 and Alisson's header against West Brom in 2021 to seal a Champions League place:

"It's not that we mention it but everyone that was involved in these moments will never forget. It's life and it's part of us," said Klopp.

"We were around when miracles happened, that's true. But it was then, still, in our hands. So we had to score against West Brom and we had to win against Barcelona. Now we have to win, but that does not mean anything changes, because the other teams could win all their games - that's the difference.

"I know that weeks ago, it was completely out of sight, I couldn't see it at all. But that didn't mean that we will not try to closer. That's the only thing we did: got closer. It's still more likely Manchester United will win and if they finish the season above, they deserve it."
