Nigeria have been phenomenal, disciplined in defending and decision-making and really looking sharp.

Work for England to do in the second half.

I said to expect tension and drama.

An engrossing first half ends with this last-16 tie balanced on a knife edge.

    Oh almost!

A lovely link up on the right gives Lucy Bronze the chance to get in to the box to deliver, but a heavy touch takes the ball just out of play.

There is plenty for the Nigeria fans to shout about, they've been excellent in this first half.

Georgia Stanway is pushing forward now allowing Keira Walsh to sit in space behind her.

    England 0-0 Nigeria

If I'm being honest, from what I have seen from Nigeria before the World Cup, I wasn't expecting them to be at this level.

However throughout the group stages I was very impressed by them, strong in defence, lacking in midfield a bit.

But so far they have been one heck of a team!

    Tonight, no joy.

That is the worst VAR decision I’ve seen at this World Cup. And why did the ref not explain herself? Absolutely no reason for that to be overturned

    Tom

That’s an awful use of VAR. I guess the bar for “clear and obvious error” no longer exists. That’s a foul anywhere else on the pitch. There isn’t a mistake by the official in giving the penalty so to change her mind just shows a complete lack of bottle from her. Whoever is on VAR needs reviewing themselves after the game for telling the ref to check it, since once the ref goes to the monitor 999/1000 they change their mind.

Lauren James is lurking on the edge of the box for every corner, looking for that big volley. She has the chance to smack another after an initial clearance but slices it wide.

In facing nine shots this first half, that's the most England have faced in the first half of any game under Sarina Wiegman.

England are on the attack at the moment, though. They have another corner.

I'm concerned that the call going in Nigeria's favour will just give them another boost of momentum.

They've had the momentum so far in this first half.

Armchair football fan: Should that be overturned? Thought it was a bit soft but it's not like there was no contact

Liz: I don't know what a penalty is anymore, honestly I don't. That is a foul that continues into the box. I understand nothing about handballs either, btw. The theatrical fall was stupid, though.

Dan: VAR has officially ruined the game. I thought it was for clear and obvious errors? Football has got far harder to watch since it arrived

Matty: We were told there would be explanations following VAR reviews, but that hasn't really happened. They just say "following a review" - we still need to hear why that decision was made.

England have been very similar to the USA in this WC so far, they just haven't clicked, none of the fluidity that we saw at last year's Euros.

    Steve

Every England match is the same, 20 minutes in and all negative comments if England aren't 3-0 up. Fans are supposed to support.

Fantastic defending. That was a goal-saving block from Jess Carter.

Surely Nigeria are about to take the lead. What a block that it.

Two huge blocks by England keep this at 0-0!

Having had their reprieve, Nigeria are down the right end as far as they are concerned, creating two good opportunities from close range. The first from Uchenna Kanu is blocked by Millie Bright, the second from Christy Ucheibe is also prevented from reaching Mary Earps.

    This is a proper contest.

Georgia Stanway was confident the decision was going to go England's way and had put the ball down ready to take the penalty.

That got a loud roar from the fans before they realised the referee was going to check the monitor. In the end, I think the right decision was made. There was barely any contact and it would have been harsh.

I agree with all those messages. I don't think it was a penalty. There was contact for sure, but that's football.

    Bright: that's not a penalty

That's not a penalty. Went down way too easy.
