If the players weren't pumped, they certainly are now!

That was some entrance on to the pitch - a smoke archway followed by a defeaning rendition of the Australian national anthem.

It's absolutely packed in here and the noise from the stands so far has been incredible.

    Karen Bardsley
Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

    I've got goosebumps!

I want to be out on that pitch so badly!

I am so proud to be a Lioness and for Australia, to have the anthem belt out across this cathedral of sport, must be so fantastic,

I would be buzzing to be out there on that pitch.

It's embarrassing enough both the men and women failed to win the Ashes, surely we can't lose to them at another sport we invented.

Trying to concentrate at work this morning…..not easy! BBC sport set up on my computer and I will be sneakily watching from my desk. Hopefully I won’t end up hiding under it, my nerves are already shredded!

Anthems are all done now. This is a properly good atmosphere inside Stadium Australia.

It will be some test for both teams.

God Save the King plays out. No boos, although hardly any fans singing along.

Very few England supporters in Sydney.

I think for Australia, it's of course to get their players to use the speed and pace that they have.

  13. 'Kennedy missing is a problem for Australia'published at 10:53 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

    Australia v England (11:00 BST)

    Fara Williams
Former England midfielder on BBC One

It's not surprising that Sam Kerr is starting - she is the poster girl of this tournament. Millie Bright knows her well. I think Alanna Kennedy being out is more of a problem for Australia, she has been a major part of this tournament but she is ill.

England are not too focussed on them, the way Sarina [Wiegman] plays is that it's all about us and that's why she hasn't changed the line-up.

    BBC One

Lucy Bronze's brother Jorge speaking to BBC One: "For us it's more nerve wracking than for Lucy. We wear our hearts on the sleeves, shouting and screaming more than anything else. She's got ice in her veins, we're the ones who are a nervous wreck on the side lines.

"I think the really nice thing about this tournament is it's Lucy's third and you can really feel the the atmosphere. People are here to watch women play football at the highest level and that's really exciting to see your sister do that."

Robert Johnson: England's surprise defeat to Australia in a friendly a few months ago could be a blessing in disguise. There'll be no underestimating the Matildas today.

Richard Macartney: Really need Toone and Stanway to be at their very best today. So far both have been underwhelming and well below their best . Hopefully no yellow card hanging over G will free her up.

Msikkle: My anxiety cannot take this!! I’m so nervous!! Go England! Go lionesses!!

Two wins from immortality. Football changes forever if the Matildas win this World Cup, without a doubt.

The challenge has always been can we change things for the better for the women's game here? Can we keep the momentum and build on it?

Well if the side win this tournament I have no doubt that will happen.

  20. 'What a night for some footy!"published at 10:46 British Summer Time 16 August 2023

    Australia v England (11:00 BST)

    BBC One

Matildas forward Emily Gielnik speaking to BBC One: "It's surreal and I don't think the fact that we can't hear each other right now is a bad thing. In this stadium, this noise is electric. What a night for some footy!

"We're just pumped to be here to be honest, furthest we've ever gotten so let's just hope we can go to the final."
