I am afraid we will leave you today on that very sad note.

Read more tributes to Gordon McQueen below:

Former Manchester United team-mate Bryan Robson was one of the first to play tribute, calling his friend "strong and brave, and ahead of his times in being a defender who could contribute as much in attack as he did in defence".

"He was a perfect fit for Manchester United with his flair, courage and big personality, and that's why the fans loved him.

"Most importantly, though, he was a brilliant person with a huge heart. He lit up any room he walked into, and that's how he should be remembered."

Lou Macari, who played with McQueen for Scotland and Man Utd, added: "RIP Gordon, friend and team-mate. Biggest character in football, large as life, funny, full of desire. Took to Utd like a natural and loved the roar after one of his runs.

"That awful illness robbed us of the real Gordon, heart goes out to family, wife Yvonne was a 24/7 warrior for him."

If Jude Bellingham's arrival at Real Madrid was a heart-warming occasion, there was shock and sadness to follow with the news of Gordon McQueen, who died today aged 70.

No sooner had the clamour over the Premier League fixtures calmed, then Jude Bellingham announced his arrival at Real Madrid.

The 19-year-old England midfielder gave an assured performance in front of the world's media, even explaining how his Real Madrid move could help his national team-mates: "From a national team point of view, I am going to learn a different culture, learn how to play in Spain and maybe give that to the players who have only experienced playing in England. It is nice for me to be able to give them that and they can give me what it is like to play in the Premier League.

Bellingham also revealed a good luck message from his England manager: "Gareth Southgate is someone who have spoken to quite a bit recently because of the games coming up and myself not being available.

"He is always just so supportive. We have a really good relationship. He has obviously trusted me more recently to play in the starting XI. I am very grateful. He texted me this morning actually, wishing me well."

It brings such joy to see Luton v …. What a story. What a rise. What fun. Last season saw the promoted clubs stay up as three established ones imploded. Can’t see that happening again but what fun it is to see Luton in the Premier League. We’ll make a go of staying up.

An ice cream man has described the "amazing" moment Manchester City's Erling Haaland boarded his van and helped serve up frozen treats for fun.

The goal-scoring wonder was out celebrating his team's historic Treble when he spotted the van and knocked on the window.

Stunned owner Ejaz Azam said it was his "favourite moment ever" and was only too happy to welcome Haaland onboard.

The Scandinavian striker said it was "incredible" to make his own ice cream.

Mr Azam, from Oldham, said he was "so shocked" after coming face-to-face with Haaland close to Mayfield Depot near Manchester's Piccadilly rail station.

"Haaland asked to come in the van and then we served slush to people. It was my favourite moment ever," the 36-year-old said.

  13. Messi stars for Argentina in Chinapublished at 15:10 British Summer Time 15 June 2023

    FT: Argentina 2-0 Australia

Lionel Messi gave the fans in Beijing's Workers Stadium what they wanted - scoring the opener and playing his part in the build up for Germán Pezzella's second as world champions Argentina beat Australia in what was a lively friendly.

It took Inter Miami-bound Messi just two minutes to fire home and the 35-year-old stayed on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

There was also plenty of Premier League talent on display.

Aston Villa's Emiliano Martinez pulled off a brilliant reflex save in the first half, while Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez came close to adding a third goal after the break.

And there were run-outs for new Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister, Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez, Tottenham's Christian Romero and Giovani Lo Celso, plus a late cameo from Manchester United's Alejandro Garnacho.

    Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham told BBC Sport about playing under the weight of expectation: "The expectations I have had on myself since I started playing football and since I joined Dortmund has always been higher than the expectation anyone could put on me.

"I know the level I need to be at and I know the level I want to be at.

"You get a good taste of that from the World Cup because I got a lot of expectations from my early performances in the tournament.

"So it is all brilliant experience, it is all learning for me. I don't just want to come here and win. Of course, that would be amazing, but I also want to develop my game, which I know I will do."

Even before the TV companies start working out which matches they want to screen on what days, we know some games will be moved anyway.

West Ham, Liverpool, Brighton have all qualified for the Europa League group phase so six matches immediately after those games will be moved to the following Sunday or Monday.

In addition, Aston Villa have Europa Conference League qualifiers on 24 and 31 August and - if successful - will then go into the group, so up to eight pre-Christmas matches will be shifted.

And Man City v Brentford on 23 December will be postponed as clashes with World Club Cup in Saudi Arabia.

  18. Former Brighton keeper Ryan denies world championspublished at 14:42 British Summer Time 15 June 2023

    Argentina 1-0 Australia

Former Brighton stopper Mat Ryan, who now plies his trade with Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, has been by far the busier of the two goalkeepers in the opening stages of the second half as Argentina look to stretch their lead against Australia in Beijing.

He pulled off a double stop to palm away shots from Lionel Messi and Angel di Maria.

Ryan was then well placed to save a Messi header, much to the dismay of the local crowd, who raise the decibels inside the Workers Stadium every time their hero touches the ball.

The Premier League player count increases following the first round of substitutions, with Manchester City's Julian Alvarez and Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso replacing Di Maria and new Liverpool signing Alexis Mac Allister.
