It would be easy to dismiss Manchester City's apparent interest in Declan Rice as an attempt by West Ham to create a market for the England midfielder that will force Arsenal to increase their bid.

However, City are looking at their midfield options and Rice comes into their thinking.

There is also interest in Chelsea's Mateo Kovacic, whilst clarity is expected over Ilkay Gundogan's future once the internationals are done.

Gundogan's contract expires at the end of the month and manager Pep Guardiola wants the Germany midfielder to stay with City.

However, Barcelona are offering a longer deal.

West Ham have rejected Arsenal’s first bid for England midfielder Declan Rice.

Mikel Arteta has made Rice one of his main transfer targets, with suggestions that a deal was close.

However, it is understood Arsenal’s initial offer has left the Hammers unimpressed as it contains a number of clauses.

Sources at West Ham do expect further communication from Arsenal, although they are also anticipating an offer from Manchester City.

City are refusing to comment on potential interest in Rice.

However uncertainty remains over the futures of skipper Ilkay Gundogan and Bernardo Silva, which could force Pep Guardiola into the transfer market. Gundogan

  16. Winter breakpublished at 09:23 British Summer Time 15 June 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Little is quite as it seems when it comes to the English football calendar.

The Premier League has incorporated a winter break into the 23-24 season but instead of no matches on 20 January, there will be a split round, with some games on the 13th and some on the 20th.

And, if a club has to play an FA Cup third round replay and a Carabao Cup semi-final second leg, they will be playing on the 16th January and also the 23rd, so not much break at all really.

So even in a non-World Cup year, the season still starts on 11 August. I love my football but that is ridiculous. Start should be first weekend in September at the earliest with a finish in mid-May latest. If necessary drop the League Cup to facilitate this.

  20. Pre-Christmas crushpublished at 09:11 British Summer Time 15 June 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

The Premier League's Christmas fixtures have been listed for 23/12, 26/12, 30/12, with nothing in New Year midweek.

I would anticipate quite a bit of movement with these.

The Premier League has tended not to play matches on Christmas Eve in recent times, which restricts TV slots for the 23/12 round as the EFL Cup quarter-finals are the week before.
