    Manchester United

Manchester United is deeply saddened to announce that our former defender Gordon McQueen has passed away.

Gordon, who was a huge fans' favourite during his time with the club between 1978 and 1985, has died at the age of 70, after being diagnosed with dementia.

He joined the Reds from Leeds United and was part of our 1983 FA Cup-winning team, when Brighton & Hove Albion were defeated in a replay at Wembley.

When leaving in 1985, the ex-Scotland international had amassed 229 appearances for the club, scoring 26 goals from centre-half.

His coaching spell took him to Middlesbrough, where he worked under close pal and former Old Trafford team-mate Bryan Robson.

Flags are flying at half-mast at Old Trafford as a mark of respect to Gordon and in tribute to his service, on and off the field.

    HT: Argentina 1-0 Australia

Argentina go into half-time at the Workers Stadium in Beijing leading their friendly against Australia - thanks to moments of magic from Lionel Messi and Emiliano Martinez.

Messi was given a thunderous reception and duly rewarded the Chinese support with an opening goal in the second minute.

The world champions threatened to run riot, powered by a strong Premier League core, with Aston Villa goalkeeper Martinez and Tottenham centre-back Christian Romero starting in defence and Chelsea's Enzo Fernandez and Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister in midfield.

But Australia came back into it and J-League striker Mitch Duke was denied on the half hour after Martinez pushed his close-range effort on to the post.

McQueen played for two of the biggest clubs in British football, won 30 caps, external and became an icon, in part because of what he achieved on a pitch but in other part because of what and who he was away from it. He was accessible, fun and as normal as can be. He was a character.

But he suffered. In recent years he endured illness. There was the cancer in 2011 and a stroke in 2015. He accepted both of them with stoicism.

"Most of my playing contemporaries came from the tough council estates. It was a harder life which prepared me for what's happened."

What happened, in January 2021, was vascular dementia, which again highlighted the issue of what damage heading a ball for an entire career might have done to him and others.

McQueen scored more than 40 goals in club and international football and most of them were with his head. He was a giant defender whose calling card from 1970-71, when he broke into the St Mirren team, right through to 1984-85, when he played his last games for Manchester United, was his ability in the air.

We look at the goal at Wembley now and wonder how many other times in his life did he meet a cross in that same thunderous way, either putting one in the back of an opposition net or clearing it away from his own territory. Tens of thousands of times, for sure.

His brother Iain recently asked whether all that heading in matches and in training was worth it. It sounded like a rhetorical question at the time and it's probably a question that will live on with McQueen's wife Yvonne and their children Hayley, Anna and Eddie.

He will be mourned and remembered by so many. His presence reached far and wide, through his playing days, his life as a coach at Middlesbrough and through his media career.

Even when his voice was compromised by cancer of the larynx, Gordon McQueen could bang out a story with all the timing and the humour of a trained comic. It didn't matter that we might have heard some of them before. Every time, he added a flourish.

Once, we showed him a picture of his famous goal against England at Wembley in the madcap summer of 1977, him towering high to nut the ball past Ray Clemence, a prelude to the tartan pitch invasion and the annexing of English goalposts.

"You're soaring above everybody there, Gordon."

"Aye, and that's me on the way back down," he replied.

    "Clemence had no chance…"

"He didn't even get it on the way back out."

He then told a story about meeting the tartan masses in the aftermath of the chaos at Wembley, a yarn that served as a reminder of how different things were back then.

"I got the train home the next morning. Scotland fans everywhere. They were asking me to sign bits of turf. I said, 'I can't sign turf, it's impossible'. They were going, 'Just put your finger in it, big man. Scratch it, do something'.

"They all had these dollops of turf in their pockets. The boys hadn't had much sleep."

It's a glorious image from an innocent time, a day when a top-class footballer got the train home after an international match.

    Leeds statement on Gordon McQueen

Leeds United are saddened to learn of the passing of former defender Gordon McQueen at the age of 70, following a battle with dementia.

Born in Kilbirnie, Scotland, on 26th June 1952, McQueen was signed by St Mirren as an 18-year-old in 1970, before joining the Whites in 1972, where he would go on to make 172 appearances.

In his first season at Elland Road he helped Leeds reach, and played in the 1973 European Cup Winners’ Cup final against AC Milan.

During the 1973/74 campaign, McQueen formed a key partnership in the heart of the Leeds defence with Norman Hunter and the Whites went on a 29-game unbeaten run in the First Division at the start of the campaign. He made a total of 36 league appearances as Don Revie’s side were crowned champions of England for the second time in the club’s history.

At the end of the season, he won the first of his 30 caps for Scotland, making his international debut against Belgium.

During the 1974/75 campaign, McQueen played a crucial role in helping Leeds reach the 1975 European Cup final, scoring three goals on route, but was unavailable for the final in Paris against Bayern Munich, after being sent-off against FC Barcelona in the semi-final second-leg at the Nou Camp.

He was twice named the club’s Player of the Season in 1974/75 and 1977/78, along with twice being selected in the PFA Team of the Year in 1974/75 and 1977/78.

In 1978, he went on to join rivals Manchester United, with whom he won the FA Cup and Charity Shield in 1983.

McQueen returned to Elland Road in 2019, with many former players, staff and legends as part of the club’s centenary celebrations and was also given the Freedom of the City of Leeds, along with the rest of the Leeds United team from 1967-1974.

The thoughts of everyone at Leeds United are with Gordon’s wife Yvonne, daughters Hayley and Anna, son Eddie and grandchildren Rudi, Etta and Ayla, along with his friends at this time.

  15. Statement from the McQueen familypublished at 13:11 British Summer Time 15 June 2023

A statement issued by the McQueen family reads: "It is with the heaviest of hearts we announce the passing of Gordon McQueen, 70, who died at home in the early morning today, leaving behind his wife Yvonne, daughters Hayley and Anna, son Eddie and his beloved grandchildren Rudi, Etta and Ayla. "We hope that, as well as creating many great football memories, he’ll be remembered most for his character. Our house was always full of friends, family and football, just as it was in his last few months as he fought so bravely in what became a very cruel battle against dementia. "The disease may have taken him too soon but he definitely lived life to the full, the ultimate entertainer, the absolute heart and soul of every occasion, the most fun dad anyone could wish for. "Huge thanks go to the wonderful staff at Herriot Hospice Homecare for their outstanding care, the utterly incredible Marie Curie team, who were there at the end with Gordon’s wife and daughters, and Head for Change, for the emotional support and respite care.

"Also to our wonderful friends and family, who rallied around at the worst of times, going above and beyond. For that, we are so very grateful."

Jude Bellingham on what has impressed him most since signing for Real Madrid: "In the room where I signed the contract, with the trophies. That was the biggest one for me - all 14 of them [Champions League/European Cup] trophies staring at you.

"You can't wait to get your hands on one yourself. It was really exciting, very nice to look at and very motivating."

On whether England team-mates had tried to convince him to play in the Premier League: "At the World Cup and national team camps it is hard. All of them want to see me come back to England and play for their teams, which I really appreciate. But I like the idea of this being out of my comfort zone.

"Maybe it would be an easier option to go back to England - my native country - and live there and play there in the Premier League. But it is just I couldn't turn down Real Madrid really.

"It felt like the right move for me. It wasn't because the other clubs were bad. It was just because Real Madrid was where I wanted to be."

    Real Madrid

Jude Bellingham was asked if he could help make Real Madrid competitive with Champions League winners Manchester City: "A club like Madrid and its fans and the people who work for the club deserve to have trophies every year. This year they didn't manage to get La Liga and the Champions League.

"That is the standard I want to help the club reach, where they can compete for these honours very closely every year.

"Manchester City had a great season, but it just gives us more fire to go for it next year."
