A yellow card for Martinez was correct. Alison was too far from goal and not central enough for it to be a straight red. Poor error by Martinez though.

The first half of this game was breathless and exciting and brilliant. Don't be surprised if the second half starts the same way.

Question. Striker goes through with just the keeper to beat. Gets fouled. Red card. Goalkeeper fouls striker with a defender on the line. Who can't use his hands. Yellow card. How does that work?

FT: Brighton 4-1 Luton
Luton Town
Luton manager Rob Edwards, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "There were positives. But let's get it right, we don't like losing. We know Brighton's are a top team but I thought there were positives at 1-0. We were in the game at 2-1 and then shot ourselves in the foot. There are opportunities for us to learn and learn quickly.
"I thought their penalty was harsh. I haven't seen ours back properly. They're not going to get overturned unless they are both ridiculous decisions. We deal with it.
"We can learn quickly from this. There are still players to come into the group who are at the training ground and not quite fit yet. Against a top team I saw some good moments but we need to be better in other moments. Nothing surprised us today. Brighton are an excellent team with an excellent manager. They are in Europe this year. But we can take heart and will get better."
On Kenilworth Road: "It is unique and we need to make sure it is a hard place for people this year. At places like this we need to respect the opposition, be compact and be aggressive and retain a threat. At home it will be a different story."
Sheff Utd 0-1 Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace goalscorer Odsonne Edouard: "We worked very hard to win this first game. I think we dominated but we should have scored more goals, but it's good for the next few games.
"I'm a striker so my target is to score goals for the team and I hope I will do this [this season]. It's good for the confidence as a forward.
"It's just the start of the season, we have 37 games to come, so we will see."
FT: Everton 0-1 Fulham
Fulham
Fulham boss Marco Silva speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Very good to win the first game of the season, it does not matter what the opposition side is, it doesn’t matter if it is my old team, but very important to get three points.
“We started well, but after that first 15-20 minutes we lost the plan and let the game go in the direction that was not the best for us. We controlled the set pieces well, because we know they are a physical tough team.
“It was clear that it was not a good performance from us, overall the game, but the commitment, the ambition and the desire and the togetherness were there.
"We improved in the second half, it was a very good goal as it is something that we planned and something that is in our way to play. Everton had their chances to equalise, we had our chances as well.
“We need more time to work, our preseason was not at the level that it should be so we missed a bit of energy. But we were able to win a football match and that shows we have the quality to work.”
FT: Brighton 4-1 Luton
Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "I think we played well. In the first half we could move the ball faster. The first half was important to prepare the second half. We had a lot of chances to score in both halves. We have to improve to score more goals, especially for the attackers. They threatened from set pieces but for the rest I think we played well in defensive phase. If you ask me if it was one of the best games in my time I say no. We have lost three important players and we need to reach the same level. It is normal first game is difficult.
"Joao Pedro can play striker, can play winger, midfielder. He needs to improve his mentality to score goals. If he can score three goals in a game he needs to take them.
"We are building a stronger squad. We will play 60 games this season and we have to be ready to play every three days. It will not be a clear first XI. The most important thing is that all players feel inside of our idea and target."
On Moises Caicedo: "He wants to leave. If Moises wants to leave then it is not on my focus. My focus is on my players and my work. What I can improve. If we win the next game, we will start very strong."
Sheff Utd 0-1 Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace
Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson: "We knew Sheffield United would make like difficult for us and they wouldn't take too many chances playing through the midfield, but I thought we dealt with it extremely well. It's just a bit disappointing not to get that second goal to give ourselves a margin.
"Odsonne [Edouard] has been excellent in pre-season. I don't think we saw the best of him last season. In the 10 games I had at the end of the season we always thought the quality was there.
"What he's done for us in pre-season and today, that's what he's got. That's in his locker and it's really good to see him bringing that out. I hope today's game, not just the goal but his all-round play, will improve his confidence because if we can get him playing at that level week after week, I think we can be a handful for a lot of teams."
Sheff Utd 0-1 Crystal Palace
Sheffield United
Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom: "We knew it was going to be tough, we knew we'd be up against it. Palace deserve the win but there's nothing that scores us in this league, we just know we've got to get better from here on in.
"I think we needed to get the first goal and take advantage in that first half, when we were much more competitive. We had moments when we were 1-0 down but never really created much, especially in open play. But I'm proud of the players and proud of the effort.
"We set a record for the number of Under-21 players making their debut in the EFL but I can't say I want to set the same sort of record in the Premier League. We want and need the injured players back, we want and need reinforcements, and if we get that we'll keep improving."
Brighton 4-1 Luton
Sheff Utd 0-1 Crystal Palace
Sheffield United
Sheffield United's Chris Basham: "We've had to change a lot of things and had to bring in players that probably weren't expecting to play or to play in that position.
"[Palace] were good, they're a top end Premier League side, but we gave everything that we've got. We maybe gave a lot of fight and determination but there wasn't enough quality at the end of it.
"We could walk off the pitch with our heads held high and hopefully we can take that into the coming weeks."
Right, while we all take a little breather, let's catch up with some more reaction from the earlier games.
Newcastle 2-1 Aston Villa
Newcastle are ahead at the break after an entertaining first half, certainly for the first 20 minutes or so.

That is a big call and you can bet your bottom dollar they will be checking that on Match of the Day tonight.
But by the letter of the law, the referee has got that right.
The fans may feel that's against the spirit but there were two or three players in between the ball and the goal, so it is a yellow not a red.

Kieran Trippier's free kick is headed over for a goal kick.
That will probably be that.
Newcastle 2-1 Aston Villa
Emiliano Martínez is way outside of his box here to try and beat Miguel Almirón to a ball over the top. Alimiron is first to it, knocks the ball past Martinez, who pulls the Newcastle man back. Sending off? Just a yellow card for Martinez, much to the home fans' annoyance.

Matt Cash gets a free kick after he is caught challenging Bruno Guimarães for an awkwardly-bouncing ball. Douglas Luiz floats it in for Lucas Digne, who tries to find Pau Torres but the whistle goes for a foul.

Whenever you see football supporters in stadiums come to watch the new signing there is always the hope that he is going to be special.
And you could hear the sound from the stands when Sandro Tonali got the ball.
