Even though Spurs hit the woodwork twice towards the end of that first half, Manchester United created the better chances overall.

They've had 14 shots to Spurs' seven, although both teams have registered three each on target.

United lead the xG (Expected Goals) battle 1.26 to 0.53, meaning they should really be ahead - with the big purple blob on the right of the graphic representing the sitter of a header missed by Bruno Fernandes.

  3. 'They won a penalty that just the referee saw'published at 18:28 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Fulham 0-3 Brentford

    Fulham

Fulham boss Marco Silva to BBC Sport: "Really difficult for us, as we expected. We expected a tough and tight game. Always a derby are decided by small details. This is a good example of this, some you can control - and what we could control we were not at our best level, and others that you cannot control - the referee decisions and that stuff they were against us.

"There were some mistakes from the referee that made a huge impact on the game too."

On Brentford's penalty: "That moment decided the game, finished. OK we were losing but it was a tight first half. We tried a reaction from the second half, it was clear. We hit the crossbar, a good moment from ourselves. Unfortunately the ball [did not go in] the net.

"But they won a corner and from the second action they won a penalty that just the referee saw. Our players, they were really surprised with the decision from the referee.

"I have seen the moment 10 times, I can not see anything. Just the referee saw, and probably the VAR they saw it as well. It is difficult to understand because in my opinion this was a clear error from the referee."

  5. 'The last few days were intense for Endo'published at 18:26 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 Bournemouth

    Liverpool

More from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: "I am not sure it is clear and obvious with the way we use VAR [for the red card]. There is contact. I don't want to give advice to the refs but if he gives a yellow I don't think anyone says it is a red card. I can't believe that. Yes there is contact, this is clear. But this happens all the time in the game. There must be a different intention behind when it is a red card. Let's see what we can do. We will try to talk to people.

"It was not how you plan it [the introduction of Wataru Endo]. The last two days for him were brutally intense. This morning we sat and spoke but we did not speak about a 4-4-1. I didn't think that would happen. Everyone knows when you come on for five minutes in a game like this it feels like you have played 200. Everything is new. This midfield never, ever played together. It was not planned but we came through it and now he has his first minutes."

On Trent Alexander-Arnold: "He told me it is just a kick so I hope that is all it is. It is painful but should go away pretty quickly."

  6. 'We have to speak about' the red cardpublished at 18:25 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Liverpool 3-1 Bournemouth

    Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “That [the reaction to the red card] was positive. It was a big fight but the start was the opposite of positive. Conceding after a minute or whatever was bad a but then it was offside and we concede again. We needed a few minutes but then we played really good. We scored two great goals and had more chances and caused problems.

“It became a big fight when we were one man down. Scoring the third goal was super important. They had then their moments but we got the three points which is most important.

“I don’t have an explanation for the start. You would like to think the disallowed goal was a wake-up call but it wasn’t it. We will find that it should not happen.

"From my position it was a clear penalty. Dom [Dominik Szoboszlai] gets the ball and gets hit and it was in the area. But I have not seen that back."

On Alexis Mac Allister’s red card: "Harsh. We have to speak about it. What you can see in the pictures is yes there is contact but that is it.

“It was straight, there was no real power in the foot. There was contact but there is contact in a game all the time. I think if he gives a yellow card nobody would say, 'by the way you need to have another look at that.'"

  7. 'We were more dangerous'published at 18:23 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    FT: Fulham 0-3 Brentford

    Brentford

Brentford boss Thomas Frank to BBC Sport: "Sometimes these key moments, hopefully you're getting on the right side of those. I would say it was a very even first half. I know it was a mistake [for the first goal] but [Yoane] Wissa still had to be very composed and cold in that moment which he was.

"Then for the 2-0 goal I thought we were more dangerous and created more opportunities to kill the game off. Then we got the penalty, I think it was a penalty, Wissa was in front of [Tim] Ream and could not get his shot off. And then of course the red card - I guess that's just the way it has to be.

"I'm confident, because the way the game looked for the first 65 minutes, I felt we gave zip away. I'm still confident we'd have won, but of course you'll never know."

On goalkeeper Mark Flekken: "Of course it's big shoes to fill but Mark is showing how good he is. He was one of the best in the Bundesliga when we signed him. He had a good solid performance today. I am pleased for that.

"I've been asked, 'what will we do when Ivan is not here?' We have seen that [Bryan] Mbeumo and Wissa have scored goals. We are very confident. We have been cool and haven't rushed out to get another striker."

  8. 'If you take risks, you need to score'published at 18:21 British Summer Time 19 August 2023

    Wolves 1-4 Brighton

    Wolves

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil to BBC Match of the Day: "I think we are very early in the process; we knew there would be a lot of things to fix. There wouldn't have been a change made if things were going well. We created chances, but Brighton are clinical. That is now two games where we haven't converted chances. Shot wise and xG wise, there's nothing in the game. We need to improve in that, but in terms of commitment, they kept going.

"If you miss chances, things can go against you. We need to keep creating opportunities. We have to find away; we take risks and when you get reward from that in as game you need to score. We didn't and they did. They benefited and were clinical.

On Mateus Nunes' red card: "Mateus knowd my thoughts; he's a great kid, I deal with that stuff privately. He was excellent today but we need him available."

Spurs look exciting but need a proper forward. United still look like United and I'm sure the "we're in transition" excuses will be wheeled out soon for the tenth year in a row.

This is no better from United than the Wolves game. We're going to get found out pretty quickly if we keep playing like this.

Tottenham defenders are looking around at the linesman but what I'm thinking, who is marking Fernandes?

Great play from Manchester United to play him in and how has Fernandes not scored that? Definitely onside.
