Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Right from the beginning, we gave an incredible goal away. You make life really difficult for yourself. But the team reacted really well. We dominated the game and created countless chances and should have scored five, six, seven goals easily. And when you have done the most difficult thing which is to get back ahead against a team that is well organised, you have to defend your box from one corner. It is the only chance they have and you get punished. Yet still you get another two chances and don't score - that is the story of the game. The amount of things we did to merit to win the game comfortably, we end up with one point.

"We have this situation a thousand times in football [for the first goal]. We gave the ball away in a really dangerous area and it was a really cool finish. All three substitutes changed the game. Fabio [Vieira] was involved in everything we created and I am really happy with that. To see players with the ability to make and take chances with quality. The same with Eddie [Nketiah]. It is my fault that Fabio has not played more and today he gave me reasons to play him more.

"We have to show another level of commitment and desire and 'over my dead body'. With 10 men, you cannot concede a goal."

Mike: Brighton are your second favourite team until they’re challenging your team for European places!

Just to comment on the opinion at 17:38... it's less that Brighton are everyone's second favourite team, and more that they generally are really fun to watch from a neutrals perspective.

Chris: To everyone saying Dyche out, whenever we've changed manager we're still in the same situation. Problems are from top down, starting with Moshiri. Thats where the anger should be aimed

So far so lucky for Ten Hag. Should have been a penalty for Wolves first match, apology way too late, and never a penalty today. Poor.

Nottingham Forest boss Steve Cooper, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "We gave everything, that’s for sure. The start was a bit of an obscure one. You plan to start well but we didn’t think we’d start as well as that. It set the tone for the whole game.

"I’m not going to overegg a defeat too much, but at the same time you have to look a bit deeper than a result. It’s still a loss, though, and we have to turn it around if we can.

"We knew we’d have to absorb pressure from United, but we created chances ourselves. You need luck on your side. It was clear that it wasn’t with the way some situations went.

"The modern referees are top ones – they really take their time over things. It was the opposite today. I’d love to talk more and say what I really think, but I can’t do that."

On making further signings: "Everybody’s working hard to try and make a few things happen. Maybe one or two things aren’t far away. We’re not far off looking like a decent team and we have to keep on that journey."

On Taiwo Awoniyi: "We’re pleased with his goals and if you want to do well in this league, you need to have someone who will put the ball in the back of the net. He certainly did that."

On the penalty decision that led to United's winner

I wondered whether it is a moment where you think, "Did they actually see it?"

I cannot believe that the officials have come to that decision and awarded a penalty.

I look forward to the day where the officials can communicate their decisions to us, and explain their workings out in the VAR room.

  20. 'It's a marker'published at 17:35 British Summer Time 26 August 2023

FT: Man Utd 3-2 Nottm Forest

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Horror start, but the character of the team was brilliant. We stayed so calm and so composed. We stuck to our belief, stuck to our plan, played some good football and scored three good goals. It was a great comeback.

"With all respect to Forest, we can’t allow them [those goals]. They were easy give-aways. It’s crazy, but sometimes games go like this. As I said, we stayed calm.

"It’s a marker, absolutely. We’ve seen this team can bounce back. If you have such a start, you need to get over it. It’s not easy, but compliments to the team.

"We have the personality. In certain moments we can definitely improve, but in general this team has the character to bounce back all the time."

On Forest wasting time: "The rule is not right. The team was delaying from the start and they were getting rewarded for it."
