    Sheffield United 0-0 Everton

Sheffield United are nearly through on Jordan Pickford's goal. Gustavo Hamer slides a ball through the middle of the Everton defence for Cameron Archer to race on to, but it is excellent covering from James Tarkowski and he wipes out the danger.

Against Doncaster, Beto came on and was very confident. His body language was good, he stood up tall and was asking for the ball into him constantly.

I just feel that the players around him also played differently when he came on too, they had the ball at their feet and looked up and could see him ready to receive the ball.

For the midfielders they can pick him out and look to gamble, play the ball into him and make a run behind the defence or wide to receive it back.

After some game time I think he will get the momentum he needs to do well for Sean Dyche and this Everton side.

There's a huge amount of pressure on Sean Dyche to turn things around quickly, but then again there would be huge pressure on any manager at the helm of the club at the moment.

Fans are desperate for the opening of the new ground, which is due to take place next christmas, to be in the Premier League.

At the very least the club needs to be steadied. All the money that has been spent in recent years without the results to go with it, this is hopefully where the tide turns.

The last two seasons have been nail-biting, to the death, and very, very hard work.

An early yellow for Jarrad Branthwaite, sliding in for Everton on Gustavo Hamer. Branthwaite's challenge was fierce, maybe he got a bit of the ball but then the ankle and he has to be careful for the next 80 plus minutes.

The free-kick finds John Egan at the back post unmarked, but he has to do much better than that as Jordan Pickford dives to his right and catches the effort.

If Everton lose they are relegated. Simple as that.

I nearly dropped my cup of tea, Chris Sutton has gone with an Everton away win.

Bright from Oliver McBurnie on the edge of the Everton area and he looks to take on Nathan Patterson, who does excellently to slide in and send the ball behind for a corner.

The hosts go short, and nothing comes from it.

It is a huge game today and both managers know that.

It will be very much an 'up and at em' game today, the work has been done on the training pitch, they'll both be asking their players, "What have you got?"

They'll be looking for their players to show them some personality.

Both teams are in a similar position, not in a good place, terrible position having lost their first three games, terrible stats too.

  9. 'Scoring has been Everton's stumbling block'published at 12:33 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

    Ex-England goalkeeper on Football Focus

Both sets of fans will be hoping that a win today can start some momentum for their seasons.

We saw that multiple times with Everton last season, they get the win and start thinking 'right, let's kick on,' and it didn't quite happen.

Everton have not scored a league goal this season, that has been their major stumbling block for the last two years.

Not having a solid number nine on a consistent basis, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has struggled again early this season, and now Beto has been brought in. Can he make a difference for them?

Maybe not against Villa, but for sure against Fulham and Wolves, both at home, the Everton fans would have expected their side to win those games.

Everton win a free-kick inside the opening 60 seconds, with James Garner having the chance to cause havoc and make Sheffield United work, but the delivery from deep is pretty poor and easily headed clear by the first Blade.

    • Each of the last four Premier League meetings have been won by the away side; only four fixtures in the competition's history have seen five consecutive away wins – Leicester v Man City (1994-2003), Blackburn v Fulham (2002-2005), Newcastle v Tottenham (2013-2015) and Crystal Palace v Liverpool (2015-2017).
    • Everton are winless in their last six Premier League away games against promoted sides (drawn three, lost three).
    • Everton are yet to score or pick up a point in the Premier League this season. Only in 1926-27 (first five) and 1958-59 (first six) have the Toffees ever lost each of their opening four games of a league season in their history, while in English top-flight history, only four sides have ever lost and failed to score in their first four fixtures: Derby in 1899-1900, Stoke in 1906-07, Preston in 1924-25, and Crystal Palace in 2017-18.
    • Everton have won just two of their last 22 Premier League away games (drawn 10, lost 10).

  15. 'We will be more of a threat'published at 12:24 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

Sheffield United v Everton (12:30 Bst)

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom speaking to TNT Sports: "I am happy [with transfer business] it has been a challenging window, the hard work starts now and we continue to improve and it is important we knuckle down."

On Cameron Archer starting: "He likes scoring goals and his game is based about creating chances, he has agility and speed but he is one of a number of players which are down on game time."

On the loss against Manchester City: "You have got to give your best performance and at the moments we were not at our best we conceded two goals, we have added more quality as the window went on and we will be more of a threat to more teams."

On facing Everton today: "We did see we had four of our first six games at home, we hoped to capitalise on that. We have now got the game that we have today and we want to try and win it."

Everton have got better. They got off the mark against Doncaster Rovers in the EFL Cup.

They need a striker to start scoring as they haven't scored yet in the Premier League. They've created plenty of chances in their home fixtures and I think the 4-0 loss against Aston Villa was a game to forget.

Sean Dyche needs to get off the mark and I think he will get off the mark with three points.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-1

Everton boss Sean Dyche has told TNT Sports that they "didn't want Alex Iwobi to leave" but have to "look at the reality of the situation".

With a number of players out injured, the Toffees bench today sees only five outfield players plus two goalkeeper.

Stick Joao Virginia up front for the last 10 minutes, see how he gets on.

  18. 'Every game is a huge game'published at 12:17 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

Sheffiled United v Everton (12:30 BST)

Everton boss Sean Dyche speaking to TNT Sports, on the 2-1 Carabao Cup midweek win against Doncaster Rovers: "I think it was a tricky one especially in the first-half, the performances in the league have been very good, we have to do that again against a side back in the Premier League.

"It is important to remind ourselves we have been creating chances but we just need to take them chances."

On the signing of Beto: "There is a hunger and desire to him, he has got to adapt to the Premier League and we have to encourage him to enjoy it and go through the challenges of the league.

On today's game against Sheffield United: "Every game is a huge game, that is the truth of the market which we are in."

Joe: The promoted teams this season in the Premier League have played eight, lost eight. Today's Sheffield United vs Everton dogfight feels like a true litmus test as to whether former Championship sides have what it takes to survive. Big game for both clubs.

Everton have played well in 2/3 games this season, with none of the players leaving featuring in those games. Been unlucky and struggled for goals which is why Beto was brought in. Don't understand the doom narrative when the season has just started, let's wait and see but I feel more optimistic than the last two seasons!
