    • Brighton suffered a 3-1 defeat by West Ham last time out, having won their first two Premier League matches this season. The Seagulls have not lost consecutive games since October 2022 - Roberto de Zerbi’s second and third in charge.
    • Newcastle have lost their past two Premier League games, this after having only lost two of their previous 15 beforehand (W10 D3). The Magpies last suffered three consecutive league defeats in March-April 2022.
    • Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon has been involved in three goals in his past four Premier League appearances (two goals, one assist), having not scored or assisted in his previous 20. His first Premier League goals were scored against Brighton in January 2022 - a game in which he scored twice for Everton, but they lost 3-2.
    • Two of the three players to progress the ball the furthest upfield in the Premier League this season are Brighton's Lewis Dunk (682m - first) and Kaoru Mitoma (530m - third). Only Manchester City's Phil Foden (six) has created more chances following a ball carry than Mitoma (five), while the Japan international has progressed the ball further upfield than any other non-defender.

    Manchester City

Man City hat-trick hero Erling Haaland speaking to PLP: "It started a bit sloppy but we ended in a good way. Important win, we go into the international break having won four in four. Good start to the season.

On City's slow start to the game:"Every year is like this at this club. We start a bit late and a bit sloppy because we play right until the last game [of every season] because we are the best club. It is how it is. We will only get better and better from here.

On his hat-trick today v Fulham:" I'm back. No problem for me. I am always hungry. It's a new season and I am ready for him.

On if the side need Guardiola given they are performing so well without him: "Good question. I think he misses us, we also miss him sometimes too. So we look forward to having him back."

  3. 'The sort of signing De Zerbi deserves'published at 17:24 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

    Brighton v Newcastle (17:30 BST)

Scott McCarthy, We Are Brighton, external

The youngest-ever scorer for Barcelona and the Spanish national team, the heir to Lionel Messi, a player with a €1bn release clause, is coming to the Amex for one year.

Needless to say, the Albion will probably not be paying a billion euros to turn the deal permanent at the end of the season. But this still has the feeling of a game-changing signing in terms of the money Brighton are willing to pay for a player.

The rumour mill suggests the Albion are covering up to 80 percent of Fati's wages, with most estimates putting that figure at £160,000 at the very least. That totally smashes the club's existing pay structure.

It is a sign that Brighton are increasingly confident of their place in the top 10 and willing to start throwing around similar money to their contemporaries in that area of the table, rather than being plucky gatecrashers punching above their weight.

Fati is also the sort of signing a manager like Roberto de Zerbi deserves. It is testament to De Zerbi, not only that Barcelona were happy for one of their biggest young stars to come to Sussex to rebuild his career, but that Fati apparently chose Brighton over Spurs following just one conversation with the Albion head coach.

It is a far cry from transfer deadline day 10 years ago, when the big-name signing was Dean Hammond returning on loan from Southampton. No offence, Dean.

So 1 September 2023 will go down as one of the most surreal days in the history of the Albion. Little old Brighton signing the best players from Barca’s academy on the same day the Europa League draw gives us matches against former European champions Ajax and Marseille, along with a trip to AEK Athens.

  6. 'If you work with this talent you have much responsibility'published at 17:21 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

    Brighton v Newcastle (17:30 BST)

Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi feels Barcelona loanee Ansu Fati is a "big player" but that he "can't make mistakes" as he tries to develop the 20-year-old forward during his time on the south coast.

Spain international Fati has joined the Seagulls on a deal until the end of the season, having been linked with Premier League rivals Tottenham.

"I'm very pleased, it's a big player," the Italian said of the new arrival. "We lost Enciso and we needed one big player.

"We are lucky because we have a lot of young players, potential top players and it will be one responsibility more.

"If you work with this talent, you have much responsibility because it's our football heritage and we can't make mistakes with these players because football needs this talent and you have to manage it in different ways.

"I've always thought like this. Especially for the big, big talent, I feel the responsibility to help this talent to become great players.

"Sometimes the coaches think only of the result, only of their career but football needs to have great players. It's a big responsibility and I feel it.

"I think our style is very close with his characteristics, with his qualities."

  7. Fati signing shows how far Brighton have comepublished at 17:19 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

    Brighton v Newcastle (17:30 BST)

Brighton pulled off one of the coups of deadline day by signing forward Ansu Fati from Barcelona - one of the most exciting young talents in Europe.

He's far from the finished article (and he's not featuring today) but is still of a calibre to get fans out of their seat. That Albion have been able to secure him is some endorsement of just how far they have come in recent years.

  8. 'We want to put it right' - Wilson wants rebound at Brightonpublished at 17:18 British Summer Time 2 September 2023

    Brighton v Newcastle (17:30 BST)

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson is ready for a Brighton backlash at Amex Stadium on Saturday and says the Magpies will want to get their own bad results out of their system.

Albion suffered a surprise home defeat by West Ham United on Saturday and, allied to their 4-1 thumping at St James' Park in May, will be gunning to bounce back against Eddie Howe's side.

However, Wilson told the Footballer's Football Podcast that Eddie Howe's side have a response to their own back-to-back defeats by Manchester City and Liverpool as their main priority.

"We are disappointed in how we have started but you can only keep on working to try to put it right," he said. "It's been tough but if you want to become a top team you have to be competitive against these types of teams.

"Brighton are another top side but the fact we beat them comfortably last season will be more fuel for them. I think it will be a good game for neutrals."

Fresh from scoring on the south coast last weekend, co-host and West Ham forward Michail Antonio offered some advice for Wilson's team-mates.

"Brighton try to entice you to come out and are very patient. Work from your shape, press as a team - which your lot does really well anyway - but at times sit in your shape and not run around like headless chickens."

Given Wilson's extended run on the subs' bench to start the season, he wasn't taking that lightly. "I'll take note of this for around the 65th minute," he joked.

These are two smarting clubs looking to hit back after wounding losses last time out.

Brighton had all the ball and chances against West Ham but got done on the break to go down 3-1 last Saturday. For a club now so forward-thinking, two home defeats on the bounce isn't something that happens.

You won't really need reminding that Newcastle come into this game off the back of conceding twice late on to lose at home to 10-man Liverpool.

Like the Seagulls, two defeats on the trot are not something the Magpies expect to happen these days.

Both teams like to get on the front foot, both are packed with talent.

It's all set up for a heck of a game.
