I have to say the goalkeeper is weak. This is really really weak goalkeeping. If the referee gives a goal the VAR do not overturn this. Mark Flekken is very lucky. That contact is not the reason he missed his punch.

Thomas Frank barely has his eye on the game. He's moving around some pieces on a board on his lap like he is playing an angry game of chess.

Presumably he is mulling over some tactical adjustments.

The Newcastle fans are finding their voice now as they just try to help their side find another gear. It doesn't feel like it will take much for either of these sides to step it up a bit.

Anonymous: Heckingbottom complains about refs ‘not knowing the game’ - how about we turn the statement around? Players know the game but don’t appear to understand the laws? It’s about time players took some responsibility and stopped bleating when the laws of the game are applied.

Anonymous: Ten Hag gets sacked way before Eddie Howe. Newcastle started against very very tough teams and I don’t think Eddie Howe is under any pressure at all!

It is a very strange atmosphere at St James' today, quite subdued. The quality of the game itself isn't helping, no doubt.

They (Brentford) have missed a lot of chances. I know they've had a good start to the season but it could have been better with what they've created in their games. They create an awful lot and Newcastle have to be really careful.

Fulham

Fulham manager Marco Silva: "The team that did more to win the game clearly was ourselves, the team that was in command of the game was ourselves. We deserved the points, not with the best performance but if you are always commanding the game and trying with a team that are really deep then I think we deserve the three points - but not with the best performance.

On Joao Palhinho, who signed a new contract after nearly joining Bayern Munich:

"It is great news for us, it was not a great two months for us with a lot of noise around the club. It is a clear consequence of last season with players that performed well being linked with other clubs.

"But I am really pleased for Joao and he showed how he is so important for us, how he is a top player and essential for how we want to play. That is probably a surprise for many, but not for me.

Chris: Another eloquent and thoughtful manager in Paul Heckingbottom makes the point that our officials know the rules but don’t know the game. This has always been the case as to be a top referee one needs to start at about 14 and be totally dedicated, so by definition the refs will not have played at a decent level. Not their fault but this needs to be taken into account when rules are changed and there must be more involvement of people who have played the game. Also we should be fast tracking semi-pro or lower level pro players to be either refs or part of a VAR panel.

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton forward Danny Welbeck to BBC Sport: "Everywhere we go we want those three points, home or away. If we set up well we can get the win. We did that today and played really well.

"It was a tough period for me at Watford. The club environment was not as good as it is at Brighton for me personally. I was also coming back from a serious injury.

"We have a great set of lads. We fight for each other every day and it shows on the pitch. We are a team that does the basics with quality on top.

"The way the gaffer sets up the team is just brilliant. We have to take it a game at a time. The next game is the most important. We have an historic first game in Europe on Thursday.

"It is going to be a long season. We have a big squad with incredible players and everyone will play their part.

"It is not worth looking too far ahead. Only after Christmas can you start making targets."

Sheffield United

More from Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom: "It was an appalling game the way it was managed. I know Spurs won the football match but I was saying the same thing at 0-0. At half-time I came to see the referee, when we were 1-0 I was saying the same things.

"The referees are dictating to our goalkeeper how we play. You see from minute one we split, Spurs adjust what they do so we have to adjust again. All of a sudden our keeper is booked for handling outside and he's told he's going to get another yellow if he doesn't play the ball.

"But we have to wait and see how Spurs are going to stop us playing out before he can make a decision. They don't understand what I'm saying to them and they're refereeing a game in the top flight. Peter Banks' a good guy, but this is nothing new. It's sad.

"Wes (Foderingham) got jumped into by a player who turned his back and led with his elbow, stitches. Deemed the same offence by the referee as Ollie McBurnie saying someone is pulling his shirt. Where are we going? Where are we going? It's tough for me, we all love the game but the people who know the least about football are directing where the game is going. And that's what I can't take.

"Crazy. Absolutely barmy, but we're letting these guys run our game and we need to stop them."

Sheffield United

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom to BBC Match of the Day: "Obviously it's sickening for everyone involved in the dressing room. To come so close to three points, then thinking you're going to have settle for one, and come away with nothing.

"Ultimately that's what we play for, we play for the points and that's why it hurts. But that doesn't alter the performance. Obviously in the week we'll focus on how we can be better, but right now we have to be positive about how we played. You can see how they celebrated when they won the game, we did that to them. I'd rather have the points than be saying that to you, but sometimes that's the way it goes.

"We have to take it on the chin and be ready for next week.

"The majority of their play was outside the box, you have to accept you will give the other team something. So for us to limit them like that, that was pleasing. If we could have took one or two more of our chances, that would have been really ruthless. There's bits that we could do better, but overall another improved performance."

West Ham United

West Ham manager David Moyes to BBC Sport: "Small margins, we've had small margins in the other games that we've won. Today their keeper made a couple of saves and those margins could have gone our way which they didn't. Ultimately we were up against a top team.

"Bad timing for their first goal right after half-time but I was more disappointed with their second goal, it's really poor. In the main we've defended really well for long periods in the game.

"We were probably as good on the ball today against Man City as we have been for a long time but didn't get the opportunities as we would have liked form it. We were still a threat but not enough."

Brighton & Hove Albion

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi to BBC Sport: "I'm really pleased, really happy for the performance first of all but the result and the historic day for us. I enjoy watching my team play in a big stadium, get a big result. Now we must focus on Thursday because it will be another historic day and we want to perform for our fans."

On the strength of his squad: "We have a great squad with two players for every position. Depending on the day, the physical condition, I can change the first eleven but nothing changes in terms of characteristics. In terms of the quality of the payers, nothing changes."

On the quality from the bench: "They (the fans) have to say thanks to Tony Bloom because every year they are building a great squad, a great team, with many great players. The secret is the quality of the players. Then we work to give them ideas and organisation and everything they need."

On top four aspirations: "It's too early to fix a new target. Now we have a big target - the first game in European competition for us. We want to be ready to play, win and make our fans happy."

Luton Town

Luton Town manager Rob Edwards speaking to BBC Sport: "We have had three really big chances, we have hit the woodwork with a free header, we have had a free header right at the death with Tom Lockyer and Amari'i's chance was a very big one as well.

"I also feel we should have had a penalty, Carlton Morris has been fouled when their player is not looking at the ball at the time when the ball is in play. Anywhere else on the pitch, and that is a foul.

"We have not had a decision there and we have not taken our chances. We did not give them many, but the one big one they took, and that is the ruthless nature of this league. But, I have seen progression and a better performance, the lads are really with it. We fought diligently and were a real threat on the counter attack.

"We have created more chances than they have, but they put one over the line and we didn't. That is credit to them, but we have to learn and keep improving. It will turn, no doubt, I believe in every one of those players and they have improved in every game."

Tom the Toon fan: To all the people who think Eddie Howe is going to get sacked if we don't win today, you don't have a clue how rotten our club was only a few years ago! We support and stand together with Howe, through the good times and the bad times, but certainly not the dark times - those days are behind us! In Howe we trust.

Manchester United

Manchester United manager Eric ten Hag to BBC Sport: "We are disappointed. That's normal, especially when you have seen the game of such small margins. First-half they were on our side, we created a lot of chances but didn't score. We then concede a goal and had a disallowed goal and you're sat in a dressing room thinking how is this possible."

"It's the way it was and the you have to deal with it."

On conceding 10 goals so far this season: "We have to improve that. There are thigs from the team and individuals who have to step up. Sometimes you are in bad period, difficult periods, and you have to face that and deal with that. In this moment we don't deal too well with it but we can do like we showed last year."

"We can't blame anyone else, we have to do better and be more determined, more resilient."

On the crowd reaction to him replacing Rasmus Hojlund with Anthony Martial: "I think it was very good. Hojlund - the crowd embraced his performance. First performance at Old Trafford so it's very good that he gets that reception. He performed very well and we're very happy."
