Conor Chaplin smacks the crossbar with an audacious effort which almost catches out Anthony Patterson after Dan Neil is robbed in midfield.
The bar comes to Patterson's mercy but as George Hirst looks to smash the rebound home, Dan Ballard piles into him but no penalty is given.

Great football from Ipswich Town.
A lovely pass into George Hirst, a touch out of his feet and a great finish. Goalkeeper no chance.

What a stunning strike by George Hirst, and Ipswich double their lead in their first game back in the Championship since 2019.
The striker was set away by a peach of a diagonal ball inside the defender from Nathan Broadhead, and Hirst scorched into the box before arrowing the ball beyond Anthony Patterson.

Another ball in from the left from Jack Clarke loops to the back-post, but Sunderland can't make the chance count and Ipswich survive.

Sunderland will be peeved that they were undone, given their control of plenty of key 'performance indicators' such as possession and territory.
However, Ipswich are the team that had the chances, with just one on target for the Wearsiders when Pierre Ekwah tested Vaclav Hladky.

It's been a great game of football.
Sunderland have looked good on the eye without creating a great deal and their set-pieces have been poor.
Ipswich have had three or four chances and not taken them. Then they've scored with a speculative spot.
The players will have seen the step in the levels and they will learn from that.
Possession-wise, it's been all Sunderland, so really happy to go in at 1-0 and it gives us something to build on.

Cardiff City boss Erol Bulut said:
"It's not nice to have a goal 90+5, I don't like it. But I cannot say anything to my players, they did a great job today.
"Many friends around me text me saying with one point you have to be happy, before the game, and I said yes because they [Leeds] are just relegated from the Premier League.
"But after the first half I was thinking we could get three. But in the end we have one point, we have to be happy."

Like a boxer who has been backed up on the ropes for the first five rounds, Ipswich came out and landed a big smack on Sunderland's nose with Nathan Broadhead's goal to turn the game in their favour at the half-way stage.
Sunderland were aggressive, busy and dynamic with the ball, dominating possession and territory, but lacked true chances.
Jobe Bellingham turned over from an open goal, after Pierre Ekwah's shot was saved.
However, Ipswich's chances - Luke O'Nien clearing from Leif Taylor for example - punctuated the pressure they were under, and they got the telling touch late on.
Big 45 to come.

Sunderland are breached, Ipswich lead and it's as cheeky a goal as you'll see.
Ipswich launch a throw which is cleared out to Leif Davis on the edge of the box, and his low volley is diverted, with a cute touch by Nathan Broadhead.
Anthony Patterson left totally wrong-footed as the ball almost dribbled over the line.
The former Sunderland loanee is respectfully low-key in his celebrations, but it's a huge goal for the Tractor Boys.

Sam Morsy is a player who plays on the edge, and his harrassment of Jack Clarke eventually results in a free-kick.
He was all over him like a rash, nibbling, dragging, bustling and bashing til Sam Barrott blew the whistle.
