  1. HITS THE WOODWORKpublished at 54 mins

    Sunderland 0-2 Ipswich

Conor Chaplin smacks the crossbar with an audacious effort which almost catches out Anthony Patterson after Dan Neil is robbed in midfield.

The bar comes to Patterson's mercy but as George Hirst looks to smash the rebound home, Dan Ballard piles into him but no penalty is given.

Looked nailed on from here. Sunderland survive a killer third.

    Great football from Ipswich Town.

A lovely pass into George Hirst, a touch out of his feet and a great finish. Goalkeeper no chance.

GOAL: Sunderland 0-2 Ipswichpublished at 53 mins

    George Hirst

What a stunning strike by George Hirst, and Ipswich double their lead in their first game back in the Championship since 2019.

The striker was set away by a peach of a diagonal ball inside the defender from Nathan Broadhead, and Hirst scorched into the box before arrowing the ball beyond Anthony Patterson.

Delirium up high in the away section.

  4. Postpublished at 53 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Ipswich

Another ball in from the left from Jack Clarke loops to the back-post, but Sunderland can't make the chance count and Ipswich survive.

Opportunity but well marshalled by the men in blue.

  5. Postpublished at 51 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Ipswich

Ipswich break down the right but a stinging low cross from Wes Burns is cleared with real intent by Dan Ballard.

The visitors have a little bit of swagger about them now.

Two sides testing each other out.

  6. Postpublished at 49 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Ipswich

Luis Hemir gets the ball in the box after a clever touch through, but he's covered by Ipswich defenders and is pushed wide by hesitancy.

He might have just had a dig instead if he'd had his time again. But he'll have to put it behind him and crack on.

It is his first senior appearance.

  8. Postpublished at 47 mins

    Sunderland 0-1 Ipswich

Sunderland will be peeved that they were undone, given their control of plenty of key 'performance indicators' such as possession and territory.

However, Ipswich are the team that had the chances, with just one on target for the Wearsiders when Pierre Ekwah tested Vaclav Hladky.

  9. SECOND-HALFpublished at 46 mins

    Team-talks done and that.

Sunderland to get us going for the second-half.

Can the Stadium of Light be roused again?

  10. 'Ipswich have something to build on'published at 18:03 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    HT Sunderland 0-1 Ipswich

    Alex Mathie
Ex-Ipswich Town striker on BBC Radio Suffolk

It's been a great game of football.

Sunderland have looked good on the eye without creating a great deal and their set-pieces have been poor.

Ipswich have had three or four chances and not taken them. Then they've scored with a speculative spot.

The players will have seen the step in the levels and they will learn from that.

Possession-wise, it's been all Sunderland, so really happy to go in at 1-0 and it gives us something to build on.

Cardiff City striker Ike Ugbo said:

"It's a tough place to come to. For the first game of the season, I think everyone will take that.

"I thought the team did well today. Leeds are a top side. It was tough coming out in the second half but I think we'll take the point away [from home]."

Leeds winger Daniel James told Sky Sports:

“We are obviously disappointed with the first half. We came back out in the second half and scored straight away. That was massive. That gets us up for it and the fans up for it.

“We had a couple of chances straight after that. Sometimes you have to dig in and every point counts in this league.

“Hopefully we can build on that second half.”

  13. 'It's not nice' - Cardiff boss Bulutpublished at 17:57 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Result: Leeds 2-2 Cardiff

Cardiff City boss Erol Bulut said:

"It's not nice to have a goal 90+5, I don't like it. But I cannot say anything to my players, they did a great job today.

"Many friends around me text me saying with one point you have to be happy, before the game, and I said yes because they [Leeds] are just relegated from the Premier League.

"But after the first half I was thinking we could get three. But in the end we have one point, we have to be happy."

  16. HALF-TIMEpublished at 17:51 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Sunderland 0-1 Ipswich

Like a boxer who has been backed up on the ropes for the first five rounds, Ipswich came out and landed a big smack on Sunderland's nose with Nathan Broadhead's goal to turn the game in their favour at the half-way stage.

Sunderland were aggressive, busy and dynamic with the ball, dominating possession and territory, but lacked true chances.

Jobe Bellingham turned over from an open goal, after Pierre Ekwah's shot was saved.

However, Ipswich's chances - Luke O'Nien clearing from Leif Taylor for example - punctuated the pressure they were under, and they got the telling touch late on.

    Big 45 to come.

  18. goal

GOAL: Sunderland 0-1 Ipswichpublished at 45+1 mins

    Nathan Broadhead

Sunderland are breached, Ipswich lead and it's as cheeky a goal as you'll see.

Ipswich launch a throw which is cleared out to Leif Davis on the edge of the box, and his low volley is diverted, with a cute touch by Nathan Broadhead.

Anthony Patterson left totally wrong-footed as the ball almost dribbled over the line.

The former Sunderland loanee is respectfully low-key in his celebrations, but it's a huge goal for the Tractor Boys.
