    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Vaclav Hladky doesn't cope well with a header back by Janoi Donacien and it's a Sunderland corner.

Donacien tracked the ball over the top with Luis Hemir lurking. Had to get there.

Corner boomed away, subsequent cross boomed away. Ipswich sorting it out at the back.

  2. Postpublished at 42 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Jack Clarke tumbles under a shove by Janoi Donacien as he skips by him into the box but is pinged for handball.

The Sunderland winger had him for pace but Donacien stood his ground and as he hit the deck, Clarke touched the ball illegally.

Another chapter in that burgeoning tussle.

Not far off the break, in theory. Though given the new directives we could still have 10 minutes to go. Feels like we've had plenty of ball in play though.

  3. Postpublished at 40 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

No one in Blue seems to be able to get a check of Pierre Ekwah in midfield, who's running around like a striped Patrick Vieira clone.

Jack Clarke wins a corner, but his delivery is powered away freely by the Ipswich defence.

Ball back in Sunderland hands, and the raid begins again...

  4. Postpublished at 38 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Luke O'Nien puts a cross into the Ipswich box and there's pinball as it's eventually cleared. Great whip on it though.

Boots flying for a second like a traditional Shrovetide kick-about.

Cleared eventually. It's settling down now into an open game.

  5. 'Ipswich have to make chances count'published at 17:39 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

    Alex Mathie
Ex-Ipswich Town striker on BBC Radio Suffolk

Sunderland are there for the taking when Ipswich go forward. But we need to make one of these chances count.

Conor Chaplin is getting into nice little holes and we need to get the ball into his feet.

  6. YELLOW CARDpublished at 35 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Jack Clarke has a shuffling, languid style of running which often tempts defenders into rash challenges, and Wes Burns joins the club.

    Foul. Booking.

Sunderland have a chance to load up.

  7. Postpublished at 34 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Conor Chaplin is so close to banging a low drive in the bottom corner, latching onto Nathan Broadhead's backheel on the edge of the box, but it deflects wide.

Dan Ballard standing in his way that time, as it nicks out.

Ipswich show their class there. Chaplin is a goalscorer that's for sure.

  8. YELLOW CARDpublished at 33 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Booking for Trai Hume as Ipswich finally find some space, as Australia midfielder Massimo Luongo is clipped in full flight.

Silly foul. Sunderland unruffled at the back and Hume's foul feels needless.

  9. Postpublished at 31 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Another glorious move from Sunderland sees Pierre Ekwah slide the ball into space for Dan Neil, but he drags a low, zippy strike wide and Vaclav Hladky's dive is mere insurance policy as it was sailing wide.

Fine block tackle by Luke Woolfenden then halts a marauding Dennis Cirkin.

Wes Burns' cross is jeered behind by the home support, after a disappointing delivery.

  10. Postpublished at 28 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Ipswich are swiftly learning about the step-up to the Championship from a relentlessness and pace point of view.

There's no questioning the quality in their ranks but they just haven't been allowed to settle and moving the ball through the lines has been very difficult.

Sunderland have been near note-perfect in the manner of their play, pressing, closing down space and forcing errors.

Not enough chances created yet though, for Tony Mowbray.

  11. 'Good game'published at 17:27 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

    Alex Mathie
Ex-Ipswich Town striker on BBC Radio Suffolk

This is a good football match, to be fair.

Sunderland look a decent team. Tony Mowbray has got them playing really well.

  12. Postpublished at 24 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

George Hirst is found in a great spot in the Sunderland box as Ipswich press their claims, but he can't get the ball out of his feet.

If he gets into those positions, he'll be fine.

Dad David, a prodigious scorer, would have been proud of that positional play, if not the rest.

  13. WHAT A MISS!published at 22 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Pierre Ekwah has a crack from the edge of the box and it's an absolute sledgehammer of a strike which moves about and Vaclav Hladky in the Ipswich goal can only parry away.

It falls to Jobe Bellingham, but his first-time, instinctive effort drifts over the top. Criminal miss. He could have brought it down and picked his spot.

Ipswich lucky to stay level. What a dig by Ekwah.

  14. Postpublished at 22 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

While you can't argue Sunderland are the side in the ascendancy, Ipswich in turn have shown they possess a threat too.

The Black Cats sweep forward like a red and white wave, with one-twos opening the defence up but Patrick Roberts is robustly halted and there's no free-kick.

Cue the roars from the bench and the stands.

  15. 'What a clearance'published at 17:22 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

    Alex Mathie
Ex-Ipswich Town striker on BBC Radio Suffolk

How did Luke O'Nien keep that out? What a clearance!

Great play from Ipswich Town. It shows you that we can do it when we want - that is a lot better.

  16. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Great interplay between Jobe Bellingham and Jack Clarke sees the Sunderland winger released the byline, but his dink into the box is knocked behind by Luke Woolfenden.

Sunderland threaten from the subsequent corner but in the end it's kept safe by Ipswich.

It's getting a bit exciting this.

  17. CLOSE!published at 17 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Luke O'Nien almost turns the ball into his own net as Leif Davis catches a volley from a back-post cross and almost finds the far corner.

In the end it's a good clearance and there's further concern when the ball comes back into the box but Anthony Patterson gets his hands on the ball to the relief of a bumper crowd.

  18. Postpublished at 15 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

There's a calmness to Sunderland in possession, as they stroke the ball about on the well-manicured turf of the Stadium of Light.]

There's a little less calmness between the sticks for Ipswich, as another loose touch from Vaclav Hladky is almost punished by the hosts, but the cross into the box is dealt with.

  19. 'No time on ball for Tractor Boys'published at 17:16 British Summer Time 6 August 2023

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

    Alex Mathie
Ex-Ipswich Town striker on BBC Radio Suffolk

Ipswich are not getting the time on the ball as they had in League One.

They are not used to teams having all the possession against them.

  20. Postpublished at 13 mins

    Sunderland 0-0 Ipswich

Wes Burns sneakily clips the heels of a marauding Jack Clarke on the Ipswich right, and Sunderland get another free-kick.

He's been a real attacking weapon for the visitors over the last season, but at the moment he's looking back towards his own goal, with Sunderland controlling possession.
