  5. 'England too predictable in attacking areas'published at 13:04 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    FT: England 1-0 Haiti

    Eniola Aluko
    Former England forward on ITV1

There was a lot of crosses today, from Bronze, Kelly Hemp, and there is a predictability to that.

In the first half, Alessia Russo was playing, but if that is the approach and pattern of play, should it be Rachel Daly up there instead? She is stronger in the air.

If you want to be less predictable, you need mroe creativity, especially in the 10 role.

Ella Toone looked a bit disconnected today. Can you put a Lauren James in there who is a bit more creative, offers more movement and interchange of positions?

  6. 'The win is the most important thing'published at 13:00 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    FT: England 1-0 Haiti

Here's what manager Sarina Wiegman told ITV after her England side defeated Haiti 1-0: “It was a very hard game, I’m very happy with the three points. They were very unpredictable, very transitional. That’s what they showed and we struggled with that. We did create chances but we lost the ball and then they were gone. That was hard for us.

“We want to finish our chances. We did it with the penalty which was good because the win is the most important thing.”

On why England couldn’t score more: “We were very close, we were sometimes too close to the goalkeeper, who was courageous. Sometimes we had the last pass instead of shooting ourselves. I hope the next game in open play we can score a goal.”

On Georgia Stanway and Mary Earps: "In the first half, Georgia was struggling, she needed to pass it quicker. She picked up later so that was good for the team. Mary, not having to do a lot then having a lot at once.”

On facing Denmark next: “Recover and then go for the next game”

  8. 'First game settles the nerves'published at 12:51 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    FT: England 1-0 Haiti

Here’s what goalscorer Georgia Stanway told ITV after England’s 1-0 over Haiti: "They challenged us. They were very dangerous on the counter attack, that is something we will work on now in training. Mary came up with a big save and everyone played their part."

On Mary Earps: "She’s very good, a top keeper. Those are the moments that makes them become a top keeper. The most important thing is the three points, it’s a good start."

On her penalty: "I was just focussed on the ball, focused on the situation and blocked out everything. The first one was a very good save, so credit for the save but she was off her line. There’s a process I go through an I just stuck to that."

On getting the win over the line: "You have a really long build-up. We’ve been building up for five or six weeks, we’ve been here in Australia for two weeks already. A first game settles the nerves, we can build momentum and it’s good to get that World Cup feel."

On facing Denmark: "I’ll be up against a teamp-mate [Pernille Harder at Bayern Munich] who I will be playing with next season. It’s another challenge but we should just focus on ourselves."

  9. 'England maybe got away with one'published at 12:47 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    FT: England 1-0 Haiti

    Karen Carney
    Former England midfielder on ITV1

My anxiety was through the roof, especially when Dumornay got on the ball.

Mary Earps made two fantastic saves, one in particular at the end, and Haiti were very dangerous on the break.

We said before the game that maybe England could have put in an extra central midfielder to stop the counter attack, but Sarina didn't go with that.

I think England maybe got away with one in the end.

    FT: England 1-0 Haiti

    Karen Carney
    Former England midfielder on ITV1

That back line have had to face Dumornay today, who will be one of the best players in the World soon.

But England have got a clean sheet. Mary Earps made some fantastic saves, and dealt with the transitions and managed to come through it.

Tournament football is about building momentum, getting points on the board and moving forward. There are definitely some positives to take from today.

  12. 'England still need to grow'published at 12:42 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    FT: England 1-0 Haiti

    Anita Asante
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I don't think England underestimated Haiti.

They still need time to grow and build, that's a backline that hasn't played together very often and they didn't have the fluidity but they definitely grew into the game and created enough opportunities to warrant scoring more goals.

    FT: England 1-0 Haiti

There's some obvious concern about England's finishing at the moment, but here's some encouraging statistics:

They have scored in each of their last 14 games in the Women's World Cup, scoring 24 goals in that run.

England also had 11 shots on target against Haiti, their most on record (since 2011) in a single match at the Women's World Cup. Alessia Russo had five of these, the most by a Lionesses player in the same timeframe.

  14. 'Earps kept England in the game'published at 12:38 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    FT: England 1-0 Haiti

    Karen Bardsley
Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

With everything that has been swirling round goalkeepers over the last few days, that is why goalkeepers are important and that is why they should be valued because Mary Earps has kept England in the game tonight.

Considering the sad mess their country is in, hats off to the Haiti team.

Work to be done for this England team if they have any chance of taking on the world champions. I'm hoping it's just a nervy opener they needed to get out of the way.

We only scraped a 1-0 win against Austria in the first game at the Euros… don’t panic!

    Jimmy

Let's be honest, a poor performance by England, who have struggled to cope with the physicality and work rate of Haiti. First game nerves? I think we will be more settled for the next game. Lots for the team and manager to talk about.

    FT: England 1-0 Haiti

    Karen Bardsley
Former England and Manchester City goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

At the end of the day, group stages, first game of the World Cup, you have to find a way to win and England have done that tonight.

We probably could have finished more opportunities in front of goal, lacking that final third quality.

Didn't quite have the rhythm that we were expecting to see in terms of build up play, going through the midfield.

Big difference in the second half when Lauren James came on, Rachel Daly made an impact but perhaps it just wasn't long enough.

Plenty to think about and plenty of work to do but three important points.
