Sarina Wiegman's first England starting XI of the tournament includes striker Alessia Russo, who gets the nod over WSL Golden Boot winner Rachel Daly.

Another big selection is Ella Toone in the number 10 role instead of Lauren James.

Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp are on the wing, while Jess Carter is presumably playing in the left-back role.

Captain Millie Bright, as expected, starts at centre-back having not played a competitive match since March due to a knee injury.

England XI: Earps, Bronze, Bright, Greenwood, Carter, Stanway, Walsh, Toone, Kelly, Russo, Hemp.

Haiti XI: Theus, Limage, Joseph, Dumornay, B Louis, Jeudy, Mondesir, Petit-Frere, Pierre-Louis, K Louis, Borgella.

This is the entrance (above) to Brisbane's official fan park which was opening up earlier today in preparation for hundreds of England and Haiti fans waiting to watch their World Cup opener.

Around 40,000 tickets have been sold at Brisbane Stadium but I've bumped into several England fans who are travelling around Australia without tickets to watch games in the fan parks.

It's not a bad view at all, though by the time England's game kicks off, the sun will be down and the city's sky line will light up.

There's plenty of entertainment around including a small-sided pitch with mini goals, a penalty shootout competition, photo opportunities (like the giant ball I posed next to earlier) and lots of food stalls.

England captain Millie Bright is "absolutely ready to play" against Haiti, manager Sarina Wiegman said yesterday.

Bright has not played competitive football since March following knee surgery.

"We are happy. This was the plan. The plan worked, so Millie is ready to play," said Wiegman.

Bright added: "When you're surrounded by the best people, I was very confident in my recovery and I've been given everything I needed to be in this position.

"I'm very grateful I'm able to play and I'm just super excited to be here."

We're expecting team news to drop in the next 10 minutes.

  6. 'A celebration of football'published at 09:18 British Summer Time 22 July 2023

    England v Haiti (10:30 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Excitement is building up and down the country as England fans young and old hope to witness another summer of success.

BBC Radio 5 live was at AFC Urmston Meadows’ ‘Big Football day’ earlier - where they are having coaching sessions and a big public Women’s World Cup watch party today.

They spoke to Jimmy Khan, who is vice chair of the club. He said: "It’s a festival, a celebration of football, primarily we’re here to watch the England match but prior to that we're going to have some football matches going on involving girls, and a bit of coaching.

"It's the expectations that the England successes generated and we're struggling to keep up with it!"

It is lovely and sunny over in Brisbane but sadly we can't say the same for parts of England today, where it is absolutely chucking it down.

Young footballer Isabel, who plays for the junior team, adds on 5 live: "I really enjoy playing here even though sometimes it can get a bit rainy, I really like it.

"I quite like Ella Toone because she plays for Man United and I also quite like Kelly."

England fans have taken over Brisbane!

Well, not quite. But it feels that way. I popped down to the 'Pig n Whistle' pub earlier where Free Lionesses had gathered as part of a crawl towards Brisbane Stadium.

Around 500 fans were expected to be a part of it and there was a great atmosphere with England fans sporting flags, a range of shirts, face paint and banners.

They will be greeted by the colourful tournament branding at the stadium. It's a cool evening in Brisbane but the sun has been shining all day and given it's meant to be winter here, that's a treat.

There's plenty of ex-pats in Australia so England should have a decent crowd. I met several who had booked two weeks off work to travel out for the group stages as well!

A number of key figures involved in last summer's momentous Euros triumph are not at the Women's World Cup.

The Lionesses have an injury list which includes captain Leah Williamson, Euro 2022 Golden Boot winner Beth Mead and midfielder Fran Kirby, while vastly experienced pair Ellen White and Jill Scott have retired.

Head coach Sarina Wiegman’s 23-player squad still consists of many familiar faces from last summer, as well as six players who will be going to their first major tournament.

BBC Sport takes a closer look at those who made it on to the plane here.

    Good evening from Brisbane!

Many of you will have just woken up from a good night's sleep or are settling down to watch England's opening game over breakfast.

It's cool and dark here in Brisbane now but it's been a beautiful day and plenty of fans have been out exploring before kick-off.

I snapped these photos on my morning walk at about 8am Australian time, taking me along Brisbane's South Bank, across the Goodwill Bridge and along the river which locals call "the Brown Snake".

I met local man David and his dog Gus (a fox terrier), who are orginally from New Guinea, an island off Australia, and had spotted the Fan Park on their usual walk and asked me about England's chances.

"Are they any good?" David joked.

"Oh yes, they are European champions," I said proudly, adding I was obviously from England.

David was on his way home to his wife to watch defending champions the USA's opening game against Vietnam.

Brisbane feels more aware of the tournament than Sydney, where I have spent most of this week. The bridge has flags celebrating the World Cup all the way along each side and there's plenty of advertisement.

356 days ago, England made a dream a reality.

The Lionesses beat old rivals Germany at Wembley to win their first major women's tournament trophy.

Now they are looking to make more history by winning the Women's World Cup.

They take their first step towards that goal when they face Haiti this morning.
