England have to give their best defensive performance to win this game.

Because Colombia have the quality that I don't think they will have seen yet in this World Cup.

We saw that against Jamaica for Colombia with that unbelievable goal [from Catalina Usme] in the game.

If England are defensively sharp in their own box, they can go and win it at the other end but to keep a clean sheet against Colombia, they won't want to see extra-time and they won't be happy to get to another penalty shootout.

That's when fatigue, if they get through it, will fall into the next game. They need to be defensively much tighter than they have been already.

Roxanne and Neil Davis, from Peterborough, England, have travelled to Australia for the World Cup.

“We wanted to get tickets and couldn’t get any, so next best thing was to come out to the fan zone,” says Roxanne.

She tells me she’s nervous about the Lionesses game against a threatening looking Colombia. “England’s game against Nigeria wasn’t good," she says. "They need to up their game, definitely.”

Neil adds: “They’re tournament favourites for a reason. They’re really good at what they do. Colombia are no walk-over - it’s a tough game and if they get through today anything can happen."

She has attempted (66) and completed (38) more passes ending in the final third than any other Colombian player in the competition this year.

England will not just be facing a Colombia opponent who possess an impressive blend of skill and physicality, youth and experience - they will also be facing the Colombian fans.

The loud, colourful masses supporting the South American nation have been one of the outstanding features at this World Cup. Their ear-splitting, goose bump-raising renditions of the national anthem have to be heard to be believed.

Some may have flown over from Bogota, but a large number were in Australia already, part of expatriate communities of Colombians found across the country.

"Many people think we all just travelled here to watch the World Cup, but there are lots who live here," Valentina Pena, sports broadcaster for W Radio Colombia, told BBC Sport.

"There is a trend in Colombia to go and work in Australia, to travel, to study English, many Colombians are doing that. So there are a lot all over Australia."

  7. Colombia play the long gamepublished at 11:21 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    England v Colombia (11:30 BST)

The average length of Colombia’s games at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup has been 106 minutes & 10 seconds.

Excluding extra-time, only Germany (17 mins & 8 secs) and Zambia (16 mins & 29 secs) have averaged more added time (first and second half combined) than Colombia (16 mins & 10 secs) heading into the quarter finals.

  8. 'Adaptability England's super strength'published at 11:19 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    England v Colombia (11:30 BST)

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Here’s more from Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman on BBC Radio 5 Live about her side’s character and resilience: "I think we have had many challenges, over the last months actually, before we even went into the tournament.

"What you’re trying to do with everything that’s been thrown at you, is trying to have solutions ready quickly and then trying to make it work, to change it to a positive for you.

"I think one of the super strengths of this team is that we are really adaptable, we have shown [that] a couple of times, that the players have their own plans, and they know what they are doing.

"When we have to change, they can really translate what we want to do straight on the pitch, that’s what we saw when we got the red card, it went so quick, but everyone knew what we had to do. I think that is a super strength, but also the resilience and really, really wanting to win. It took a lot of energy, and we were exhausted after the game, but we did it."

One to watch today for Colombia is teenage sensation Linda Caicedo.

At just 18-years-old she has lit up this World Cup, but, away from the pitch, it hasn't been a straightforward journey.

At 11pm on the day she signed for Real Madrid in February, Caicedo was not out celebrating with family and friends. Instead, she was calling a young cancer patient about to undergo surgery back home in Colombia.

It shows where the priorities of Caicedo lie - she may be one of the breakout stars of the 2023 Women's World Cup on the pitch, but off it she knows there is much more to life than football.

Her journey so far includes a professional and international debut at 14, a cancer diagnosis at 15, and a move to one of the most well-known clubs in the world.

The latest step of that journey came in Sydney, where she jinked in from the left wing and fired through the gloves of keeper Yoon Young-geul as Colombia beat South Korea in their opening match, to earn only their second ever win at the Women's World Cup.

She starts against England today hoping to cause an upset. Read more here about her journey.

England striker Alessia Russo has taken advice from her "idol" David Beckham to embrace her first Women's World Cup experience.

Russo, 24, has started every match in Australia so far as England prepare to face Colombia in the quarter-finals at 11:30 BST on Saturday.

It is the Arsenal striker's second major tournament, but she only made substitute appearances at Euro 2022.

"It was a completely World Cup-focused conversation," said Russo.

Russo said former men's England captain Beckham had spoken to her about what he did on the pitch "but [also] how he felt in moments of a World Cup".

"He said they were the biggest highlights of his career - moments that obviously he will never forget. He said that his best and biggest memories were in an England shirt," she added.

"It is something that you can really relate to. Stepping into my first World Cup is something I've dreamt of ever since I can remember."

Phil and Gill Key, from Hertfordshire in England, are in a fan park in Sydney to watch the game. They say they had met the Lionesses on the beach - they tell me the team were relaxed and enjoying themselves.

Phil says: "I’m confident. I'm looking forward to the semi-final - England v Australia - and then for us to win the final. The ladies are good Phil said of the Lionesses. It’s the men that must pick their game up.

"I’m looking forward to the match too," says Gill. "We’ve had a bit of a mishap with Lauren James. But she’s young she’ll learn from it and move on."

Colombia have reached the quarter-final of the FIFA Women’s World Cup for the very first time and will be looking to become just the second South American side to reach the final four after Brazil (1999 & 2007).

It's fair to say their fans are fully behind them for this huge clash.

Catalina Usme says Colombia are "dreaming big" after reaching their first Women's World Cup quarter-final, and they have England in their sights.

Usme scored the only goal as Colombia beat Jamaica to set up a last eight meeting with the Lionesses at Stadium Australia in Sydney on 12 August.

European champions England start as favourites, but Usme says Colombia will not take a backwards step.

"We came here to play seven finals - we are prepared for this," she said.

"We are dreaming big - we can do this. I am extremely proud to be part of this team, both in our sporting play and our mentality. We will take on England head-to-head and give our all."

  16. Walsh return boost for Englandpublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

England were boosted by the news that midfielder Kiera Walsh's knee injury was not as bad as first thought, and she played 120 minutes in the last-16 win against Nigeria.

There had initially been concerns the midfielder had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury but a subsequent scan allayed such fears.

England fans will be pleased to see she is fine after playing that monster match on Monday and in the starting XI again today.

"Obviously a lot of high profile players have them [ACL] so it's in the media a lot," Walsh told BBC Sport. "When I went down, I wasn't too worried about my ACL. Everyone in the media was but straight away I knew it wasn't; it was a different pain.

"In these tournaments, you know one injury and you could miss the rest of the games, but England have such a good medical team and turn it around quickly, and luckily I was back on the pitch after 10 days."

  18. 'England can control the game better in a 4-3-3'published at 11:01 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    England v Colombia (11:30 BST)

    Vivianne Miedema
Netherlands forward on BBC Radio 5 Live

When I watched the game against Nigeria, I actually though Sarina Wiegman would have changed back to a 4-3-3 a bit sooner.

I think that's probably how England could have controlled the game better because she had the players on the pitch to be able to switch back to it.

If I look at Colombia and their strengths, I would go back to the 4-3-3 but I'm pretty sure that Sarina and Arjan Veurink [England assistant coach] will be doing the work now to come up with a good solution.

  19. A safe selection from Wiegmanpublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    England v Colombia (11:30 BST)

    Emma Sanders
    BBC Sport at Stadium Australia

Bringing Ella Toone back in at number 10 for the suspended Lauren James was the expected move by Sarina Wiegman.

You can also understand why England are set-up fairly defensively given just how strong the Colombian attack has been throughout the tournament.

It's unfortunate for Chloe Kelly, who scored the deciding penalty in the shootout win over Nigeria, as she often starts when England play with a back four.

But this seems like a fairly tried and tested line-up from Wiegman. Bethany England has looked sharp in her substitute appearances so far so if the Lionesses are needing a goal, she's certainly one to turn to on the bench, alongside Kelly.

  20. 'England will have to raise their game to beat Colombia'published at 10:55 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    England v Colombia (11:30 BST)

    Alex Scott
Former England and Arsenal defender on BBC One

England can stick with the back three [against Colombia], I think when you look at the players, you look at the opposition and their strengths and you try and nullify that.

But then actually I look at our threats and where we’re getting the best from Alessia Russo. She needed support so I think that will be the dilemma but what I’ve been pleased about is hearing the Lionesses come out and acknowledge that they need to up their performances.

They’re not hiding from that and they are going to have to raise their game another level to get through what is going to be a very tricky test.
