We arrived around five hours before kick-off to be inside the stadium to watch Australia v France and there were hundreds of fans around Sydney's Olympic Park soaking up the atmosphere.

The majority were Australians but there were lots of Colombian fans and they had a little private area with a screen in the front car park of a local hotel.

There were bars, food stalls, stages with live music performances, numerous big screens and plenty of merchandise pop-ups.

The Colombians have brought their flags and there's plenty of yellow, blue and red.

Sarina Wiegman and Mary Earps both spoke about how they must relish the opportunity to play in front of a potentially hostile crowd.

  3. Colombia will present 'unpredictable' challengepublished at 10:46 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    England v Colombia (11:30 BST)

Colombia, who are in their first Women's World Cup quarter-final, have proven themselves against European opposition by upsetting Germany to win 2-1 in the group stages.

Teenager Linda Caicedo has been a standout performer, while the Colombian fans have travelled in big numbers to support the team in Australia.

"Colombia have done very well. It's a strong team, very together, physically strong," said Wiegman.

"They have powerful players and want to get the ball to their attacking players because they are unpredictable and good."

    England v Colombia (11:30 BST)

With the USA, Norway, Japan and Germany all out of the World Cup we are certain to have a new name on the trophy.

Plus, underdog nations, like Colombia, are shining on the world stage.

England captain Millie Bright says "the time has gone where one or two nations are shining" at the Women's World Cup.

"That is the growth of the women's game. We expected this and it tests us as a group," said Bright.

"It's football - it happens. There is no perfect solution for opponents. We have to be better.

"It's exciting. That is what we wanted in the women's game - we wanted growth and we wanted nations to step up and improve. That's exactly what you are seeing at this World Cup."

There is no way that Lauren James' red card against Nigeria will negatively affect the spirit and togetherness of this England squad.

If anything, it will make their bond even stronger. It was a moment of madness but it didn't cost them on Monday.

England are not going home from the Women's World Cup because she got sent off. Instead, they can move on as a team and have Saturday's quarter-final against Colombia to look forward to.

If they had lost to Nigeria, the worry would have been that James could have faced a backlash on social media - and you would not want that hanging over her.

She has been a massive star for England but, depending on the length of her ban, we might not see her again at this tournament even if they reach the final.

That would be a huge shame, but the other players will rally around and support her because it's what they do.

I think the mentality within this group in knowing how to win games even when their backs are against it and they aren't performing to the levels that they should do, they're getting results.

That's a difference and that has really helped them in this tournament.

If they win the World Cup, nobody is going to look back and say how bad they were.

England are playing in the quarter-final of the Women's World Cup for the sixth time. They progressed from their most recent two appearances at that stage after failing to qualify for the semi-finals in their first three.

Their best record at a World Cup is a third-place finish in 2015.

England's ability to find a way to win during the Women's World Cup has only added to the squad's belief, Lucy Bronze has said.

The Lionesses edged past Nigeria on penalties in the last 16 and have coped with the loss of key players during matches.

And Bronze believes that Sarina Wiegman's players have built confidence thanks to the tests they've overcome.

"We're the ones who are still in the competition," Bronze said.

"There are many top teams who are going home because they haven't been able to get that win or been able to see the games out - and we have.

"We've shown that side of our team and that we know what it takes to win. We have our mentality.

    "The belief is huge."

England fans have been gathering in pubs around Sydney in the build-up to today's game and their final destination was one right outside the stadium, showing the earlier match.

I caught plenty of Mead, Russo and Earps shirts in the crowd and the bucket hats have clearly proven to be popular buys.

England manager Sarina Wiegman has been speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live about Lauren James’ suspension following her red card against Nigeria: “Of course, she is still part of the squad. She gets support from me from everyone, her team-mates.

“In a split second she made a mistake and that cost her two games, and she regretted it straight away.

"It’s the end of the game, she is fatigued, she is inexperienced and sometimes things like that happen and that is part of life.

"The punishment is there, two games. So, for the rest, she needs support from us and learns from it. Of course, she has been in every training session and in every meeting. She is still part of our team, she just can’t play tomorrow.”

Is Lauren James' two-match ban fair? Should it have been extended even further or is it a bit harsh? Hit the thumbs, let us know.

She will learn from the mistake but for now is undoubtedly gutted to be missing out.

  14. 'James is still part of the team'published at 10:15 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    England v Colombia (11:30 BST)

The good news is that England boss Sarina Wiegman says she has a plan to take on Colombia without top scorer Lauren James. Phew.

She scored three and assisted three goals in four matches but Wiegman says England "know how they want to fill that position".

"Of course, she is still part of the squad," Wiegman told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"[James] gets support from everyone. In a split second, she made a mistake and that cost her two games, and she regretted it straight away.

"It's [towards] the end of the game, she is fatigued, she is inexperienced and sometimes things like that happen and that is part of life. The punishment is there, two games.

"Now she needs support from us and to learn from it. She is still part of our team, she just can't play [on Saturday]."

The Lionesses are ranked 21 places higher than Colombia, but after surviving a scare against Nigeria in their last match, Wiegman expects a tough encounter.

"Of course, there is pressure," she said. "There are two teams who are very good. We want to play our best game and they do, too. That's how we approach it."

Sarina Wiegman sticks with the back three that was so successful for England against China and just about got them through the last-16 tie with Nigeria.

It means wing-backs Rachel Daly and Lucy Bronze will play deep (making it a back five out of possession).

Ella Toone, who started the first two games, returns in place of the suspended Lauren James. Chloe Kelly remains on the bench.

England XI: Earps, Bronze, Bright, Greenwood, Daly, Walsh, Stanway, Toone, Carter, Russo, Hemp.

Subs: Hampton, Roebuck, Charles, Nobbs, Wubben-Moy, Morgan, Coombs, Kelly, Zelem, England Robinson.

Levante forward Mayra Ramirez and Real Madrid teenager Linda Caicedo, who have been hugely impressive so far in the tournament, both start for Colombia.

Teenager Ana Guzman, who started her first match in the last 16 and assisted the winning goal, remains on the bench as Manuela Vanegas returns in defence.

Colombia XI: Perez, Vanegas, D Arias, Ospina, Bedoya, Ramirez, Santos, Usme, C Arias, Caicedo, Carabali.

Subs: Sepulveda, Giraldo, Montoya, Reyes, Restrepo, Baron, Guzman, Andrade, Ramos, Chacon, Caracas, Bahr.

  17. James ban extended to two matchespublished at 10:09 British Summer Time 12 August 2023

    England v Colombia (11:30 BST)

We'll bring you team news from Sydney very shortly. But of course, a name that definitely won't be on the team sheet is Lauren James.

After being one of England's stand out players in the group stage she will miss out today having received a red card in that last-16 match against Nigeria.

The standard one-match ban was extended to two earlier this week which means should England reach the semi-final James will not be there either.

A blow for England, but they can't dwell on that. Time to crack on without her.

Before we get started on building you up to the Lionesses action in Sydney, let's have a little look at what's happening in Brisbane.

Australia and France are into extra-time after a fascinating 90 minutes in their quarter-final.

Both sides have had their chances to win the match but failed to take them.

    Morning people. How are we?

We're around 90 minutes from getting started at Stadium Australia in Sydney where England face Colombia in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Still time to grab a brew, make a bacon butty and settle in as we build you up to kick-off.

The Lionesses are yet to taste defeat at the World Cup but it hasn't all been plain sailing.

Three wins in the group stage but only one, against China, comfortable. Plus, we had that familiar 'stomach in knots' feeling on Monday when England needed a penalty shootout to get past Nigeria in the last 16

What have they got in store for us today?
