Dear oh dear what a season this is gonna be! Newcastle wasteful, Liverpool resilient, Man City unimpressive, Man United rudderless, Arsenal lethargic, as a Hammer I’m starting to believe this could be our season!?

  2. 'Unbelievable... something for the ages!'published at 19:00 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    FT: Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool

    Liverpool

Liverpool vice-captain Trent Alexander Arnold speaking to Sky Sports: "Unbelievable to be honest. It was something very special out there today. You come here with a game plan, you want to control the game, dictate possession and try to kill the atmosphere as quickly as possible. That is normally a huge advantage for them.

"That went out the window very quickly. We had to do it the hard way, the very hard way. But we all pulled together, dug deep and delivered something for the ages.

"One of our best performances since the manager has come in, and we've had some outstanding performances as a team. We'll look back on this game as something very, very special.

On the mindset in the first half an hour: "You know how difficult it is. You dig together as a team. It sounds strange but going down to ten men almost makes you stronger and come closer as a team. You have to run the extra yards, you have to cover the gaps, you can't switch off.

"We spoke at half time about the belief that we had and what we wanted to do in this game. You don't neccesarily believe you are going to win the game but if you stick together you know you're going to get chances.

"The mentality is not to try and score two goals straight away but to stay in the game until the last ten to fifteen minutes, know the opponent will get tired, and you will have a chance.

"We executed that change of plan excellently, hit them twice on the counter. The lads that came on were outstanding, Darwin, Harvey, Quansah, all brilliant.

On the challenge on Gordon while already booked: "Sometimes away from home those things can go against you. I made a mistake and then the crowd gets on top of myself the team. Luckily we are experienced in playing in difficult environments and we pulled through."

This is why Man City and Liverpool are a cut above the rest. Pure winners. LFC had a bad season but mentality doesn't change. Darwizzy's newest fan.

When they asked themselves the question of do we know how to do it? Liverpool know how to do it and Newcastle don't know that yet.

    That is a big jump.

So, Liverpool move to seven points with that win. Very early days, but it is a big, big victory - the difference between a good and disappointing start to the campaign.

Newcastle have now lost two on the trot, which is not something Eddie Howe and his side have been used to.

  9. 'It was about mentality'published at 18:34 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

Newcastle could have had it wrapped up, should have had it wrapped up but Liverpool hung on and one and then got better and better.

The changes Klopp made were brilliant. He threw on Darwin Nunez and Jota and what he hoped would happen happened.

But with Newcastle it was about the mentality of knowing they can go and beat a team like Liverpool. They didn't know, and that's the difference, Liverpool know they can come back from these positions.

    Jurgen Klopp is beaming now.

The German is on the pitch, doling out hugs and high fives.

Then it's over to the away fans for a customary three air punches.

There are still home fans sat in the stands staring into space. Dumbfounded.

All the cheers come from the pocket of Liverpool fans in the away end and the lads in red on the pitch.

Darwin Nunez thrusts his fists skyward.

Somehow, Liverpool have come from a goal behind with a man fewer, scoring two late goals to beat Newcastle on their own patch.

A massive, massive win for them. A total sickener for Newcastle, who must now analyse quite how they've managed to lose it.

Liverpool are going to win this. Remarkably, against all odds, the 10 men are going to take it.

Nick Pope meets the free-kick but sends the ball looping wide.

    This is it.

    Nick Pope is up.

  14. 'They deserve it'published at 18:25 British Summer Time 27 August 2023

    Newcastle 1-2 Liverpool

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

They absolutely deserve it. From what they have done and the changes they have made. Since they got the equaliser, it looked as though one team really wanted to win and one team wanted a draw. That team that wanted to win was Liverpool. They deserve to be ahead just now.

    STUNNER!

This fixture, man! It just keeps on delivering drama and excitement!

Liverpool, with 10 men, have nicked a win from nowhere here and it is all down to substitute Darwin Nunez.

He is found in the box by Mohamed Salah but still has plenty to do. And boy does he do it, lashing in a shot past Nick Pope.

It's all bit, well, Stan Collymore!

I wouldn't say there is one team more likely than the other at the moment to go on and win. It is absolutely 50/50, despite Newcastle having the extra man.
