Summary

  • Raheem Sterling scores twice and assists for Nicolas Jackson as Chelsea earn first win under Mauricio Pochettino

  • Luton are still looking for their first points this season

  1. 'Unfair for people to compare him to Drogba'published at 19:54 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

It is not fair on the boy, Nicolas Jackson to compare him to Didier Drogba. They are totally different players.

But if you look at his play, his runs, his dribbling up the field, making chances for is teammates, he has so much potential.

They only thing I am disappointed about from him so far is the penalty versus West Ham. You are the striker, so take the ball and shoot.

He is a good project, definitely not the finished article by far, but so much potential. Players around him need to offer support, he can't do it all on his own.

Chelsea have won the past three meetings with Luton in all competitions, with all of these games coming in the FA Cup between 1994 and 2022.

Luton have won just one of their last seven league away matches versus Chelsea (D1, L5), a 3-1 top-flight victory in September 1986.

  3. 'Caicedo will need to adapt from Brighton to Chelsea'published at 19:51 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

    Chelsea v Luton (20:00 BST)

    Gary Neville
Former Manchester United defender on Sky Sports

It will take time for Moises Caicedo to adapt to Chelsea.

He came from a Brighton side that are so fluid and play in such a distinct way, in such a high pressing attacking style, and Chelsea don't have that [set style] yet.

He is a good player, many teams were after him, and he is capable of getting back to those levels.

Just over 10 minutes to go, it's getting dark over London.

I'm expecting a fast start from Chelsea. If they fail to win today, it'll be their worst start to a season since 1998-99.

  5. 'They're going to be motivated'published at 19:47 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

    Chelsea v Luton (20:00 BST)

    Chelsea

Chelsea captain Ben Chilwell to Sky Sports: "The performance has to be good but the three points is the most important. That is the priority tonight.

"[Being captain] is a big responsibility but I'm looking forward to it. I'm looking forward to leading the boys out tonight, the first time at Stamford Bridge for me.

"They're going to be motivated, they're coming to Stamford Bridge to play Chelsea. We know we are coming up against a physical side, they will be good from set-pieces. Hopefully we can match that."

  6. 'Sterling position different to high scoring time at City'published at 19:46 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

    Chelsea v Luton (20:00 BST)

    Gary Neville
Former Manchester United defender on Sky Sports

Raheem Sterling's starting position is deeper for Chelsea, where he starts in the pockets.

At City he played much higher up so he could get into the box and arrive at the right time, at the back post, and get those goals. With Chelsea playing in a different way he won't get those same chances in this team.

Ryan: Is it me or was Sterling massively underrated at City?? He was one of their top scorers. Pep disrespected him by benching him due to his temporary bad form. That’s affected him to this day.

Speaking of Sterling, since the start of the 2020-21 season, the England forward has been involved in 15 goals in 15 Premier League appearances against newly promoted sides (11 goals, four assists), including five goal involvements in five games against such opposition for Chelsea last term (three goals, two assists).

  9. Sterling is 'sonic'published at 19:44 British Summer Time 25 August 2023

    Chelsea v Luton (20:00 BST)

West Ham's Michail Antonio was full of praise for Raheem Sterling on the Footballer's Football podcast: "He was unreal. After the game, we were calling him 'Sonic' because I've not seen a man move that quickly with a football. It was madness. He was driving everywhere.

"It's the best game I've ever seen him play, he was on fire. He didn't deserve to be on the losing team at all."

Liverpool and West Ham have felt the force of Raheem Sterling already.

Sterling presented both with a dilemma with his intelligent pairing up with the wing-back on the right (Reece James against the Reds, Malo Gusto against the Hammers), regularly taking up space between midfield and defence for zipped passes his way, making him hard to mark and creating the potential for overloads.

What makes the strategy work to its fullest is Sterling's rediscovered confidence to quickly turn and run at speed with a ball completely under his spell, beating men or drawing them to him to create room for others.

It was Sterling's intelligent run in behind the Liverpool defence and blocked cross that led to the corner from which Chelsea levelled on opening weekend.

He stepped it up another level at West Ham, producing six successful dribbles in the game from 12 attempted (the rest of the Chelsea side combined produced 19), one of which led to the penalty that Alphonse Areola saved to prevent the Blues taking a crucial 2-0 lead.

According to statistics site fbref.com, he produced a game-high 10 progressive carries and seven shot-creating actions at the London Stadium.

When Coventry City's Fankaty Dabo fired his penalty over the crossbar in the 2022-23 Championship play-off final, euphoria filled one half of Wembley Stadium.

Luton Town had ended their 31-year wait to be a Premier League club, completing their journey from non-league to the top flight.

Just a row behind fellow Luton legend Mick Harford, former Hatters midfielder Alan West embraced his son Josh.

Luton were back in the big time.

Almost 50 years after he swapped Burnley for Bedfordshire, remaining involved at the club when they were relegated from the Football League in 2009, West had seen the remarkable rise of a club he once represented.

"I was [Luton's] chaplain through that very difficult period when they were relegated and they went all the way down to the Conference," he explained. "And then now, of course, [they have got] all the way back up. It is quite an amazing story and journey.

"Getting promoted has just put a smile on people's faces. People weren't interested in football.

"Luton has got a lot of bad press, but now it has got some good press. And that's all to do with the football club.

"There's been a brilliant spirit and attitude in the town in the last few weeks, right the way through from local council to schools to kids. Everybody is really excited."

There is no need to panic.

Sure, on paper the 4-1 loss to Brighton appears to have all corners of the mainstream media and Premier League fans across the world counting the days until relegation with a whimper is confirmed.

However, probing deeper, the green shoots for a successful campaign were apparent.

As first games go, it was certainly a baptism of fire, with the importance of being clinical in front of goal and no-nonsense defending both on display.

There is room for improvement, but Rob Edwards is already on top of it.

I can't work out Chelsea. They were class against Liverpool and West Ham for stages but have just one point to their name.

As for Luton, they've had almost two weeks to prepare for this one.

This match is an opportunity - for both.

Tom: All that money spent and we're still having to have 2 young keepers on the bench. Barkley's getting a let winner isn't he?

Damien: Chelsea have spent well over a billion quid in recent memory and yet I've never heard of most of their bench. Mind boggling.

It is a different club to five, six, seven years ago.

They are going in a different direction, buying much younger players, so the manager needs to be given time.

Yes Chelsea have been the most successful club in recent years, they have won a lot. But it is not that club anymore.

Mauricio Pochettino said in his press conference that Moises Caicedo was ready to start and he's named him in his starting lineup. It's a very strong centre midfield with him in there with Enzo Fernandes and Conor Gallagher. This will be a very strong Chelsea squad when everyone is back from their injuries.

You've got to give Pochettino time because you can't just throw a team together and suddenly everything's rosy.

There are teething problems with teams that multiple changes in them, that's natural.

I wouldn't worry about Chelsea too much. I think they're gonna be a lot better off than they were last year.

Let them develop across the course of a season and we'll see.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino speaking to Sky Sports on Moises Caicedo's first start: "It is better for him to start the match compared to last weekend. But I feel the most important thing for him is to feel settled in the team, here at Stamford Bridge.

"We were talking during the week about him being calm and relaxed. He doesn't need to show [or prove] anything. Enjoy the game and know he will come good with time and with more training sessions and fitness.

"Today he just needs to be calm, relaxed and play how he knows to play."
