  8. Konate 'could have gone'published at 14:59 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Liverpool

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “I liked it a lot. It is a derby, you have to consider different stuff With a better last pass in the first-half we are three nil up. Our counter attacks and good offensive transitions we should have scored and didn’t.

“We didn’t allow them to do what they wanted. We were clear in the challenges. It is difficult because it was a deep block and they adapted slightly and set up to our strengths.

“I liked a lot of moments and then the red card was pretty influential in the game. I wanted us to be calm and ignore that we were one man up. It is difficult in the stands because it’s like now you have to create with each possession and it took a while until we got chances. And then the penalty. I saw it back and it is a clear penalty. Ibrahima, could have gone, yes. It could have happened obviously and then we took him off and from that moment we were solid and compact.”

  9. 'We have a different vibe and energy'published at 14:58 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Liverpool

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, speaking to TNT Sports about Mohamed Salah stepping up to win the Merseyside derby: "Great players do. This season, or towards end of last season, he missed a couple of penalties, but to step up and deliver is something we need. We hope we can build on this now.

"Consistency is the most difficult thing in football, to do it each and every game is hard. Mykolenko did well but Salah stepped up. We're very pleased and very pleased for him."

On Liverpool's evolution this season: "There has been an transition of course, also in the way we play, different players with different qualities and trying to adapt. It's working well.

"Everyone is pushing each other and playing at a high level. That's the key to success.

"Everyone last year, at the end of the season, was drained - I'll be honest. It was such a disappointing season because we didn't find consistency. We played one good game - against Manchester United here and then lost to Bournemouth in the next game. It was so frustrating.

"We had a short break in the summer and then we came back and everyone felt great. It went well and we sense a different vibe and energy in the club.

"Being top of the league means nothing yet. It is game by game by game. We have to enjoy the moment, playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world."

Brighton boss Roberto de Zerbi said he is "embarrassed" by Manchester City counterpart Pep Guardiola's praise for his work.

"We are working to progress," added the Italian, who steered the Seagulls to a top-six finish last season and a place in the Europa League.

"We are not a big team yet, but we are working to it. We know we are Brighton and we have to show a lot of things in this season - a difficult season for us. We are playing well but we have to adapt to a new challenge and new season."

On whether there are similarities between himself and Guardiola, De Zerbi added: "He is working how many years? He won in Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Manchester City, but the way he won is different than with other coaches. He will be remembered not only for the victory but the way he won. It is unique."

    Brentford v Burnley (15:00 BST)

    Robyn Cowen
Football Commentator speaking on BBC Football Focus

Brentford have suffered some heartbreaking defeats - it's their worst run since January 2022. I guess what they need to do today is take the lead, hold on it to and have that psychological feeling they can win.

The pressure is on them to win against Burnley who haven't had the best start to the season either.

  12. 'Exciting game which promises goals'published at 14:54 British Summer Time 21 October 2023

Optimism for Manchester City fans is that Rodri is back. They've lost two games in a row while he's been out.

If you're just an average football fan who doesn't align themselves with one team, I think you have to watch Brighton. They can't keep clean sheets, they score goals, and against Manchester City there will be goals. I think both teams will score.

It should be exciting - a tough game for City because they aren't in the greatest of form, but Rodri being back will enhance their chances.

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Liverpool

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “In my opinion the hard work came form the fight Everton put in. The long balls, the set pieces, they tried to counter on us but we were very prepared for it. The message was to stay patient and play quick from side to side. They made the change at half-time to play with five at the back and we had to be more patient.

“It is difficult to face teams playing with 10 men. We have been on the other side and done well. Our mindset was they were still playing with 11 because it is a bit of mental thing when you have a man extra.

“We have been doing it [breaking quickly] for many seasons it is a big strength with the pace. The second goal especially. It is something we enjoy and have to keep going.”

The Football News Show: Is Dean Henderson 'rivalry' helping Sam Johnstone?

England goalkeeper Sam Johnstone says he remains manager Roy Hodgson's first choice despite the £20m signing of Dean Henderson.

A major talking point of this season so far has been Mikel Arteta's approach to rotation between first-team keepers Aaron Ramsdale and David Raya at Arsenal.

Ramsdale said this week that the "attention" on his battle for the starting positions with former Brentford keeper Raya is "strange" and that he fears for his England future.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Johnstone says being in a very similar "unusual" position with two senior goalkeepers directly competing for one spot at Crystal Palace "does play on your mind".

Just as Bournemouth's fans have been waiting for October for a kinder selection of fixtures after a difficult start, they have had to be patient to see two of their marquee summer signings in action.

With Tyler Adams restricted to one late League Cup cameo and now sidelined until the new year, much is expected of Alex Scott, last season's Championship young player of the year while with Bristol City. Fate has dictated that his debut comes against Wolves, a club who were among his suitors in the summer., external

    FT: Liverpool 2-0 Everton

    Martin Keown

It's a thankless task against Liverpool. I don't think Sean Dyche should be too disappointed by that - it was going to be very challenging with 10 men. There was only going to be one winner.
