Richard: Probably a good time be playing Newcastle. The starting team looks great. But the bench is very light with only Joe Willock a potential starter and he's not remotely match fit.

Sheffield United manager Paul Heckingbottom, speaking to Match of the Day: "I think the first half to the second half was chalk and cheese.

"Although Arsenal had a lot of the ball in the first half, Wes [Fotheringham] only had one save to make. Second half the goals were really poor.

"They out-fought us as well as out-played us in the second half. That's what good teams do, they have the physicality as well.

"We know we are down to the bare bones, but the boys getting the opportunity need to grasp it. This is the level we're at.

"We've worked so hard to get here, no-one will take it easy on us. But is fair to say Arsenal away won't define our season."

On the contrary, Mark, it's in the PL's interest to have a weak Championship: if the three promoted teams are always weaker than the rest, then that protects the established teams, ensuring that they can never be relegated and lose all their revenue and privileges.

    Sutton's predictionImage source, BBC Sport

Chris Sutton is making predictions for all 380 Premier League matches again this season, against a variety of guests.

This week, he takes on the stars of two CBBC shows - Tash, who features in The Football Academy, and Gabe from Jamie Johnson FC.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-1

This is not an easy one to call - Wolves have put together a four-game unbeaten run and Newcastle have got a few injuries to contend with, as well as Sandro Tonali's ban for breaching betting rules.

I like the job Gary O'Neil is doing at Molineux, but the Magpies are defending really well at the moment and that is going to hold the key here.

I am going with Newcastle to withstand a bit of pressure and bounce back from their Champions League defeat by Borussia Dortmund by nicking the points.

    Tash's prediction: 1-2

    Gabe's prediction: 1-2

  10. 'O'Neil and his players are building a strong connection'published at 17:23 British Summer Time 28 October 2023

    Wolves v Newcastle (17:30 BST)

    Mike Taylor
    BBC WM

"I sat with him yesterday at the hotel," said Gary O’Neil on Saturday afternoon, after watching his half-time substitute Tommy Doyle play a significant role in overturning a half-time deficit at Bournemouth."We had a chat over a cup of tea about how impressed I’ve been with him, how he handles himself and how hard he works. And that it’s on me at the moment that he hasn’t played yet, it’s nothing that he’s doing."

Doyle was one of the players signed by Wolves in final hours of the summer window. A young midfielder with impeccable credentials at Manchester City, and notable contributions to Sheffield United’s promotion and England’s age group sides already on his record, he seemed a smart loan signing. Until Saturday, though, he had featured only fleetingly, aside from the League Cup defeat at Ipswich.

"I said to him, 'because of how hard you work, when your opportunity comes, you’re going to be ready, so there are benefits to keeping working'," O’Neil explained. "They’re tough, those moments when you’re not playing and you maybe can’t see your way in. And the manager then chooses the other midfielder ahead of you today when Mario [Lemina] was missing..."

I suggested to O’Neil that in his long playing career, at some time he must have been in a similar position to Doyle on Saturday morning, waiting for a chance, perhaps sensing he was slipping down the queue to play. "Of course. And it’s easy for me to stand here and say just keep going. But when you’re the guy that’s in there, you’re like ‘yeah, keep going, but when’s it coming?’ So I’m delighted for Tommy."

O’Neil may have won round quite a few Wolves fans recently with his tactical choices, leading to important results, and his TV tactics lesson on Monday night has been widely shared, further enhancing that profile.

But Doyle’s response to his manager’s reassurance, seizing his chance, and Matt Doherty’s insistence on playing despite a groin injury – "a miracle", said O’Neil – were the latest indications that the still newish Wolves boss and his players are building a strong connection. As in any workplace, personal dynamics matter just as much as strategy. The feeling that the management believe in you is a powerful motivating force.

    FT: Arsenal 5-0 Sheffield United

    Arsenal

Arsenal striker Eddie Nketiah, speaking to Match of the Day about his first Premier League hat-trick for the club: "It's amazing. It's not been easy - last month I lost my auntie so I want to dedicate these three goals to her. Her family was here watching so it is a really special moment."

On each of his three goals: "These games are about patience, mot losing discipline. For the first goal, it was a good ball from Dec and a lovely touch and finish from myself.

"The second, I thought it was clean to go but it is never nice when see the purple VAR screen turns up. The third was amazing, a great strike and a special moment."

On handing over the penalty to Fabio Vieira: "My first instinct was to grab the ball and go, but Fabio won it and it was a good moment. It's all about being a team player. it was his time to get a chance and he tucked it away."

  12. 'I can’t remember the last time I’ve felt Wolves have in-form forwards'published at 17:21 British Summer Time 28 October 2023

    Wolves v Newcastle (17:30 BST)

    Matt Cooper, Talking Wolves, external

For the last three years, Wolves has struggled for goals and have been notorious for being among the bottom scorers in the league. Wolves were bottom of the scoring leagues last season and were the worst-performing side outside of the bottom three the previous season. Fans knew that their luck would run out sooner rather than later with such an unsustainable output and things had to change.

Wolves have been far more potent in front of goal this season with most of the goals coming from a combination of the inform Hee-Chan Hwang and the unstoppable Pedro Neto. Both have been excellent and I can’t remember the last time I’ve felt Wolves have one or two in-form forwards who look likely to score in every game. The halcyon days of Jimenez and Jota were the last when I felt like this.

Gary O’Neil must be recognised for the upturn in form for the duo who were pretty hopeless last season under Bruno Lage and Julen Lopetegui. He has somehow found a way to get the best out of them. Four forwards either scored or assisted at the weekend for Wolves - something us fans just aren’t used to. I’m certainly not complaining.

  13. 'There’s a fine balance between a punishment and protecting people'published at 17:20 British Summer Time 28 October 2023

    Sandro TonaliImage source, Getty Images

Alan Shearer said the support shown to Sandro Tonali from his Newcastle team-mates and supporters will go a long way in helping during his 10 month ban.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live before Thursday's announcement on Tonali's ban, the former Magpies forward said: "He [Howe] came out and stuck up for him as you’d expect and he said he wanted everyone to put their arms around him.

"Certainly the crowd did that at the weekend and when they were going round the pitch at the end he got a great reception. There’s a fine balance between a punishment and protecting people."

On the struggles Tonali may face while not playing, he added: "That’s going to be really difficult for him. But what has happened in the last few days, the Newcastle United public have shown great support for him, I’m sure his team-mates have there is no doubt about that.

"The football club and the manager have which has to be huge for him. I don’t think there was any other option for Newcastle other than to do that. As I said there’s a fine balance between finding the correct punishment for someone and also giving them the help that clearly they need."

  14. Tonali ban a 'monumental loss to the Magpies'published at 17:19 British Summer Time 28 October 2023

The news we knew was coming and the news no Newcastle fan wanted to hear has been confirmed - Sandro Tonali banned from football until August 2024.

A lengthy punishment for the Italy midfielder which will include eight months rehab and recovery activity [in Italy] including taking part in community work with young footballers. He has also been fined €20,000.

A devastating blow to Eddie Howe who loses his star summer signing after splashing out £52m on the most expensive Italian signing of all time. High hopes and expectations came for the former Milan captain, but now it's his new club that are paying for his past mistakes.

Regardless, it's a monumental loss to the Magpies, especially considering the ever-growing injury list on Tyneside and the congested fixture calendar with European trips to Germany and Paris on the horizon. Let's not forget there is a human being involved in this and Tonali will suffer as well in the next 10 months.

His agent hasadmitted the player does have a gambling addictionand we need to take this illness seriously, hopefully he gets the help he needs at rehab, but there's no underestimating the long term toll this could have on the player both mentally and physically. Not only in the day-to-day, but how devastated he will be to miss representing his country at Euro 2024.

One positive to come out of this is Tonali will be allowed to train with Newcastle and play friendlies. Which is a definite plus to keep his fitness up and still be involved with the team, feeling part of the group on a daily basis.

Sean Longstaff spoke of his admiration for Tonali this week and hopefully the Italian can use his talent on the pitch to improve others at the club and still have an impact on the training ground and dressing room at least. A long, difficult 10 months ahead, but hopefully he comes out of it a better person and can fulfil his potential in black and white.

It was confirmed yesterday that Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali has begun a 10-month ban from football after Fifa extended the ban worldwide.

The 23-year-old was banned by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) on Thursday for breaching betting rules.

Newcastle say he is able to return to competitive football on 7 August 2024.

Magpies boss Eddie Howe had told a news conference on Friday morning that Tonali was still in contention to play on Saturday as the club had not yet received confirmation of the ban.

But on Friday evening world governing body Fifa said it had granted a request by the FIGC to have the ban extended worldwide.

Newcastle also confirmed the ban on Saturday, saying in a statement: "Sandro Tonali has been banned from competitive football for 10 months, as effective from Friday, 27 October 2023, following illegal betting charges by the Italian Football Federation."

Vincent Kompany must wonder what has happened to his team's luck today.

That was a painfully long wait for the disallowed goal and Burnley still could have nicked a point at the end with Berge.

The offside is such a tight decision, it was a tremendous finish from Rodriguez but Bournemouth got away with it, the margins are so tight in football.

Rodriguez had one chance and tucked it away, but luck is not on his side today. VAR took its time that's sure.

That was a huge win for the Cherries.

Silvio: This Sheffield United were drawing against Man City and winning at Tottenham.

Al: Hey Alan, I think it might be a bit unfair to Ipswich to not put them in the mix - 9 points clear in automatic spot with a game in hand!

Mark: Sheff Utd clearly not good enough for the Premier League. But Sheffield United, Burnley dominated the Championship last season so they can't be "awful" teams. Does the PL itself not care about how uncompetitive it is? It can't be good for the league that the gap between top and bottom is so vast, competitively and financially. Too many predictable games

Arsenal were like a can of dandelion and burdock today, with Paul Heckingbottom's team not even post-mix lemonade.

That result will fall short of the mark for Heckingbottom - and perhaps the Blades board.
