Without trying to be cheeky, is that guy Loftus-Cheek related in any way to the Ruben who played for Chelsea?

He has the ball in midfield, turns and does what he didn't do at Chelsea. He's hammered forward and lashed it from 20 yards. He always looked a bit tentative in the final third, look at him here. His first thought is to go on goal. He looks like a player who has been freed by moving from west London.

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

This has been a proper test already for Newcastle. They've not been put under this kind of pressure often under Eddie Howe's management.

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

Anthony Gordon tries to release Alexander Isak but Fikayo Tomori reads the one-two well and tracks the Newcastle forward to gather possession.

  5. Postpublished at 21 mins

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

It's a full-on assault on the Newcastle goal.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is found in space to drive forward. He has men for company, but opts to shoot and drives his effort over the bar.

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

It's Milan v Nick Pope at the moment.

He does really well to punch over a header from Theo Hernandez from a corner. He won't thank his defenders for completely failing to follow the defender, though.

It was a completely free effort.

  7. 'Isak looks so languid'published at 18:05 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle'

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

If you don't watch Alexander Isak very often you could get a little bit fed up with him. He looks so languid. It's imperative that he can hold the ball up, help his teammates out and give them a bit of rest.

If you do watch him then you know he can do something absolutely startling like very few others can do. So far he's been very well marshalled.

Another save required from Nick Pope.

Rade Krunic unleashes a rising effort that the visiting keeper gets two hands to push over.

  9. Postpublished at 18 mins

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle need a few minutes of respite. They need to get on the ball and diffuse this home momentum. Milan are looking to tighten that screw.

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

Newcastle under some severe pressure now.

Nick Pope is again needed to fling himself in to stop Olivier Giroud steering an effort on target.

Shortly after, Rafael Leao is reaching at the back post and cannot steer a shot at goal from a tight angle.

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

That's the first time they've really stepped on the gas, Milan. They've managed to do it just because Newcastle switched off, gave the ball away far too easily and didn't get enough players back, particularly in front of the centre-backs. Too easy there.

    Save x2!

Nick Pope is drawn into action twice in a minute to keep Milan at bay.

Newcastle give possession away and the home side drive forward. Tommaso Pogeba's drive is pushed away by the diving Pope, who then stands tall to block a back-post header from Samuel Chukwueze.

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

You know how good Olivier Giroud is at holding the ball up and it's just effortless for him. He's not the quickest anymore but he never was the quickest you've seen. He is so relaxed, he makes Jorginho look panicky. He's been fantastic.

  14. Postpublished at 12 mins

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

Theo Hernandez looks to break for Milan but is clattered by Sean Longstaff. The Newcastle midfielder needs to be careful here. That's twice he's found himself beaten and needing to take extreme measures.

  15. Postpublished at 10 mins

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

The Milan fans are certainly doing their bit.

You wonder, after the weekend, what the reaction might be if Newcastle take the lead here? Might get a bit spiky.

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

    Pat Nevin

I don't think anyone has told Theo Hernandez where he's playing. He's supposed to be at left-back and he's gone and taken four players on in the centre of midfield.

Fabian Schar looks to chip a pass over the top for Jacob Murphy, who goes down after contact with a Milan defender. He feels his shirt has been pulled. He may have a case but the ref isn't interested.

  18. Postpublished at 8 mins

    AC Milan 0-0 Newcastle

Rafael Leao is already getting the tricks out. He flicks the ball infield but is taken down by a block from Sean Longstaff.

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

Rafael Leao, the first time he gets the ball he cuts inside and tries to find that far corner, he's got a real talent for that, we know he's got pace but he loves doing that. He's already had one sight, that's why you've got those players there. You need Sean Longstaff covering in that area as well.

Now Sandro Tonali drives to the byline on the outside but can't keep the ball in before his cross.

    Encouraging, though.
