  3. 'I don't think Newcastle should have anything to fear'published at 17:14 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

AC Milan v Newcastle (17:45 BST)

    Pat Nevin
Former Scotland winger on BBC Radio 5 Live

I just hope Newcastle have the right attitude. Yes it's Milan, yes we know the history of this place, yes we know what a phenomenal club they've been in the past, yes they got to the Champions League semi-final last time but Milan are not all that as far as I'm concerned.

They're a team who if you get at you can take them on, you can beat them even in this stadium. They got beat 5-1 at the weekend by their neighbours Inter Milan. They are a team who blow very hot and cold.

I think Newcastle will find out more about their mentality more than their ability. There are a lot of Milan players who weren't really getting a game in the Premier League. I don't think Newcastle should have anything to fear.

  4. 'An ideal opportunity to put Milan to the sword'published at 17:12 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

AC Milan v Newcastle (17:45 BST)

Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey previewing Tuesday's Champions League opener at AC Milan on BBC Radio Newcastle: , external“It will be interesting to see what the Eddie Howe's team is. Does Sandro Tonali play? Obviously, he didn't play in one or two others.

"The team for this game is going to be his strongest team, and it’s an indication to the players. It’s a massive time for representation. There will be some lads that will be disappointed, but that happens.

“If Newcastle start brightly and get an early goal it might not be a great place to be for a Milan player because the crowd will get on them and get impatient after the derby [a 5-1 loss to Inter Milan].

"AC Milan did really well in the Champions League last year, and they could just be having a poor run.

"It could be an ideal opportunity for Newcastle to put them to the sword."

  6. 'It's a big, exciting week'published at 17:08 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

AC Milan v Newcastle (17:45 BST)

Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson says his side are ready for a "contrast of a week" as they prepare to return to the Champions League before visiting Sheffield United.

The Magpies will compete in the group stages of Europe's premier competition for the first time in 20 years when they face AC Milan at the San Siro on Tuesday.

"It's a big week - an exciting one, one that I'm looking forward to," Wilson told the Footballer's Football Podcast.

"You've got Champions League - first appearances for many in the squad. Then a big game back in the Premier League at the weekend, one that we're expected to win."

Eddie Howe's side will return to Premier League action on Sunday, keen to build on Saturday's 1-0 win over Brentford after a shaky start to the season.

"[It's a] contrast of a week in terms of the San Siro and Bramall Lane," Wilson added.

"We have to make sure the mentality is the same for both because you can't take anything for granted."

  7. Champions League return 'deserved' after 'lots of heartache and downs'published at 17:07 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

AC Milan v Newcastle (17:45 BST)

Former Newcastle midfielder Rob Lee says the Magpies' return to the Champions League has been "a long time coming" and he is "interested" to see how they compete.

Eddie Howe's side take on AC Milan this evening at the San Siro.

"We've been waiting 20 years for this so since the Great Bobby Robson took us there many years ago," he told BBC Breakfast.

"I've seen pictures of all the Geordies out there already in the pouring rain enjoying themselves. Everybody now is looking forward to it, it's well deserved after the season we had last year."

"It's been a long time coming, we've had a lot of heartache, a lot of downs. We've now got new ownership, everybody seems to be pulling in the same direction, manager is doing a fantastic job and the recruitment has been exceptional.

"It's going to be very very interesting to see how we do because we have a very tough group."

  8. 'Would not reaching knockouts be a failure?'published at 17:05 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

AC Milan v Newcastle (17:45 BST)

    Charlie Adam
Former Blackpool midfielder on BBC Radio 5 Live

I'd love Newcastle to qualify, it is a wonderful club. They have a great history, the supporters are amazing. But if they don't qualify for the latter stages is that a failure? Or would they be happy to be in the Europa League after Christmas?

Newcastle fan Charlotte Robson is out in Milan and says she isn’t one of the fans you’ve seen all over social media belly sliding along the pavement in the rain.

“I was not party to that,” she tells BBC Newsbeat.

“But I absolutely loved seeing them having fun, taking over the city or at least a little pocket of it.

“We're so happy and grateful to be here and know that the team are going to put their all into the actual game.”

Charlotte, who’s from the Newcastle podcast True Faith, says it can’t be “overstated how important this is for fans”.

“We haven't been in the Champions League for 20 years and then on top of that there's the older fans who have waited so long for us to compete again.”

And Charlotte is also really happy for manager Eddie Howe and his assistant Jason Tindall.

“They deserve this, they've worked so hard to get us where we are.

“Nobody expected Newcastle to be this far ahead. I'm just buzzing for him.”

    Her prediction for the game?

“I think it'll be 2-1 to Newcastle United. I think we'll just get that goal at the very end of the game and the away fans will go wild.”

    Chris Sutton
Former Chelsea striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Newcastle can look at this group and think PSG are not the team they once were, Dortmund are beatable and AC Milan got absolutely smashed at the weekend.

The start to the season hasn't been particularly good but I think the win at the weekend was enormous for them.

I think Eddie Howe will be quietly confident.

Magpies midfielder Sandro Tonali goes up against the club he left this summer for £53m and you better believe he's up for it.

"It will be the most thrilling feeling to come out into the stadium packed with people again," the Italy international said.

"They let me live my dream here at AC Milan, but now I come back as a rival. I will have a lot of feelings.

"Everything happened so fast with the transfer, I was overwhelmed at first, but I have come across a wonderful team, wonderful staff and play for people who love football. The people of Newcastle will help anyone."

    Olivier Bernard
Former Newcastle United defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Every team is beatable for Newcastle within that group but you've just got to play your cards right. It's attention to detail when it comes to the Champions League.

If you don't pay attention then you get punished and that's going to be very important tonight.

There's a few familiar faces to Premier League fans (especially Chelsea ones) in this Milan side.

Ex-Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has been there for a bit now. As has defender Fikayo Tomori. They were joined this summer by former Blues team-mates Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic.

In what was an extremely busy summer for the Rossoneri, other notable arrivals include forwards Noah Okafor from Red Bull Salzburg and Luka Jovic from Fiorentina and midfielder Yunus Musah from Valencia.

Yeah, they got tonked at the weekend, but they are not short of talent.

  16. 'Big danger'published at 16:50 British Summer Time 19 September 2023

AC Milan v Newcastle (17:45 BST)

    Olivier Bernard
Former Newcastle United defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

There is a big danger for Newcastle because it's a competition that very few of them have played in before so it's quite new for everybody, the manager included. The approach is slightly different when it's your first one.

I believe the quality in the team is there so it should be straightforward how they approach the game and how they will play.

The nerves definitely will be quite hard and quite high as well. Your first game in the Champions League is a moment you will always remember.

Milan come into tonight's game with Newcastle off the back of a chastening result - a 5-1 hammering at the hands of fierce rivals Inter.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan hit two, having opened the scoring before the clock had reached five minutes.

Marcus Thuram doubled Inter's lead before the break when he thundered home a spectacular long-range effort.

Rafael Leao pulled one back for AC Milan but Mkhitaryan, Hakan Calhanoglu and Davide Frattesi put the game to rest.

Calhanoglu slotted home from the penalty spot when Lautaro Martinez was fouled by Theo Hernandez while substitute Frattesi tapped home a Mkhitaryan ball to add the fifth in injury time.

So yeah, they've got a bit of an amends to make tonight.

There are thousands of Geordies out there and ready to rock tonight. The hopes are high heading into the game but there will be a reaction from AC Milan after losing the derby.

It was important for Newcastle to get back to winning ways against Brentford and they will go into the game with confidence.
