Nottingham Forest manager Steve Cooper, speaking to Sky Sports: “Of course I’m disappointed. It’s far from the result that we wanted. We conceded a goal off something that we talked about a lot in the week – balls into the box, second and third phases and staying with men.

“The penalty that was given against us last week – if that was a penalty I think the one today is [for a shirt-pull by Abdoulaye Doucoure]. It is a penalty.

“I hope it gets analysed. It needs to be. If we have a look at the Chris Wood one last week – it’s why referees are getting a load of stick.

“When we have created chances, we’ve not hit the target. The goal that they’ve scored is an excellent finish and very clinical. I’m frustrated to say the least.

“I thought we actually started the game better than Everton. We did a lot of talking about controlling the game. You have to get the ball and try and get a little bit of control.”

On fan criticism: “Our support is incredible. I have no problem with anything that our supporters feel because it comes from wanting to support us as best they can. We’ve lost two games back to back but we have to own it, not shy away from it.

“We have to try and put things right but there will be no deflecting.”

Manchester United are aiming to win four consecutive league games without conceding for the first time since 2017.

Erik ten Hag's side are also targeting a fifth away league win in a row.

They have earned 15 points from their last six Premier League matches, more than any other club.

Re: Rich, Leeds 19:38 The formation is not the problem. City, Brighton and Spurs have played the 4-2-3-1 this season with far greater success than United. It's HOW you play it, not the formation itself.

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe reflects on Tuesday's Champions League draw at Paris St-Germain in his programme notes.

Howe does reflect on the 'extremely harsh penalty' given against his side in stoppage time that denied them a famous victory.

But he also recognises the positives from a superb backs-to-the-wall performance.

"Despite the full range of emotions on the night, now the dust has settled, the over-riding sense has to be one of pride in the players, as well as the fans who stayed with us from the first minute to the last.

"The draw keeps our chances of qualification alive."

You get an excellent view from the press box at St James' Park, really low down, quite close to the dug-outs.

I know the picture is of Newcastle warming up but Manchester United are on the other side.

Andre Onana has finished his pre-match work though.

He has already gone back to the dressing rooms.

More from Everton manager Sean Dyche, speaking to Sky Sports: “I was very pleased with the first half in particular. They’re a strong outfit, in particular at home.

“At the end of the day, you have to keep going. The Manchester United game hasn’t knocked us. We defended very well today and got the mixture right.

“We’ve just got to take on the next challenge. One game at a time is always the way I’ve looked at football, but the next game comes quickly [against Newcastle on Thursday].

“I never lose belief in what I do or what my staff do.”

On Dwight McNeil’s goal: “He deserves it. He puts a lot of work into his game.”

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has told Donny van de Beek he probably needs a January move to reignite his career.

After failing to impress Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Van de Beek has only made two substitute appearances, both against Crystal Palace in September since recovering from the major knee injury he sustained against Bournemouth in January.

The 26-year-old former Ajax midfielder wasn’t even selected in United’s Champions League squad and given Ten Hag has numerous options for Van de Beek’s preferred central role, even though the former Ajax man is on the bench tonight, it is impossible to imagine he will make a breakthrough now three-and-a-half years after completing a £35m move from Eredivisie.

“Donny has to play,” said Ten Hag.

“It was a slow start to the season because he was still recovering from physical setbacks but he is back now and doing really well in training.

“In games, he was in the squad, so he had the opportunity but I can see he has to play for his career and everything.”

Van de Beek was heavily linked with La Liga outfit Real Sociedad in the summer but a move failed to materialise. He still has 18 months left on the five-year contract he signed when he joined United.

Everton manager Sean Dyche, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: “Very pleased. Our mentality was excellent. I think that’s three away wins on the trot, which is not easy in the Premier League. I’m very pleased for the players.

“It’s a restart. It’s a step in the right direction, but there are plenty more steps to go.

“We’re looking like a side who can create and I’m pleased with the clean sheet here as well. We’ve taken the mentality [from the Manchester United game] into this game.

“I think we’re having a solid season, considering the last couple of seasons. We hit 14 points relatively early. Seventeen points would have been a fairly healthy return. Of course it’s changed, but the mentality and the performance levels are right.

“I think we’re looking like an improved outfit.”

Newcastle are looking to win three consecutive meetings with Manchester United in all competitions for the first time since January 1922.

They can win consecutive league games versus the Red Devils for the first time since 1972.

The Magpies are unbeaten in their past three league games against Manchester United (W1 D2) and also won 3-0 at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup earlier this season.

For how long can we look at that Manchester United formation - 3 years or more - and think it’s progressive? Arteta moved Arsenal to a 433 straight away. Two defensive midfielders doesn’t work (unless your defenders aren’t good enough)

I had a relatively uneventful trip to the north-east this morning, unlike Manchester United.

Manager Erik ten Hag and his players were due to fly to Newcastle but were informed a combination of bad weather and technical difficulties meant they could not make the journey as planned.

Instead, they embarked on a three-hour - luxury - coach journey instead.

In fairness, clubs have been criticised in the past for the environmental impact of taking a relatively short journey by air. At least they have avoided that - kind of.

Everton midfielder James Garner, speaking to PLP: “We’ve had a good performance away from home – they’re a good side. It’s good to get the three points.

“It was tough. We knew it was going to be a battle and I think we came out on top, in attack and defence. We definitely deserved the three points.

“We’re performing better away than we are at home. We need to change our form at home and hopefully that comes in the next few games.

“We’ve had a difficult few weeks, but we stuck to our task.”

On Dwight McNeil’s goal: “He does that in training every day, so it’s about time he gets one [in a game]!

“He works hard every day in training. Hopefully he gets a few more now.”

One piece of quality has been the difference.

It was scrappy and we watched two teams who really didn't want to lose that game.

Forest are struggling at the moment. It's a fantastic three points on the road for Everton again.
