13 shots and Liverpool have only had 2 shots on target? That is very poor. If they lose, they will only have their selves to blame for not taking any chances.

    Rudy, Surrey

It’s been all Liverpool - nonetheless Man Utd are holding on, credit when it’s due.

    Charlie

I have a chocolate each time United string together four consecutive passes. No chance of spoiling my dinner today.

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    Phil McNulty
BBC Sport chief football writer at Anfield

Manchester United and manager Erik ten Hag will be satisfied with that score at half-time despite their complete absence of attacking threat.

Liverpool started as if they were going to blow United away but they were showing signs of frustration towards half-time.In fact manager Jurgen Klopp was showing signs of frustration for most of that first half, a lot of it directed towards fourth official Anthony Taylor.

Can't expect the full blood and thunder derbies anymore when you have one team playing set up not to concede with all 11 players defending in their own half.

    Gary, Stoke

Think it’s long gone that Liverpool v Man Utd is a big game any more. United are no longer the big club they were.

It's panned out as we possibly expected it to go. Liverpool attacking and Man Utd defending.

It's not very end-to-end or massively entertaining but Erik ten Hag will be happy with that first-half.

Man Utd are doing it and doing it well, the organisation has been good but they just can't get out of their own half. When they do, they're just closed down so quickly.

If you want to get anything here then you have to do more.

What happened to the classic overlapping RB/LB. I know tactics change overtime, but with a +6ft forward surely a cross from the by-line is the most dangerous and simple option. Bring back G Nev and Becks

    Tom, Manchester

Are Liverpool playing a League One side? It's not the FA cup already is it?

    Rena

It's all been rather dull. Where is the quality?

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

Diogo Dalot's free-kick goes way wide and it is goalless at the break.

You'd imagine Manchester United will be very happy with that.

  7. YELLOW CARDpublished at 45+2 mins

Wataru Endo catches Sofyan Amrabat with a high boot and he is shown a yellow card while Manchester United have a free-kick in a dangerous position...

  8. Man Utd 'have to show more offensively'published at 17:15 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    Dion Dublin
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Possession wise it's been all Liverpool but Man Utd are still in this game and they've defended well.

Liverpool are pressing and creating but the quality of the finish isn't there yet.

Manchester United have to show more offensively second half.

Some late pressure from Liverpool as Darwin Nunez has a shot blocked inside the area before Luke Shaw beats Mohamed Salah to a ball into the box.

Shaw has had a great game so far.

Feels like Spurs vs Arsenal has overtaken this fixture as the ultimate derby match of the season.

Ryan Gravenberch has space to attack down the right. He advances a bit before squaring to Mohamed Salah, who drives a low effort at goal but it is a comfortable save for Andre Onana, who then hits another clearance out of play.

Liverpool have had 13 shots in the first half so far today, their most in the first half of a Premier League game against Manchester United since December 2018 (15).

Man Utd are set up in a way where they are just stopping Liverpool chances and balls coming into the box.

They're organised and there's lots of talking.

Ross: Watching inverted wingers is so frustrating. Cut back inside and kick the ball into the nearest opposition player. Rinse and repeat. Just get to the byline and cross the ball for the striker, just once

Serge: Szoboslai's drop in form is concerning. Loses the ball too often, misplaced passes.

Lyle: Szoboszlai has been really sloppy so far, as has Salah. Someone in a red shirt just needs to release a killer ball and that should settle it. Until that happens, Utd will take a lot of comfort from that

Liverpool have been very positive today, really good.

It's just that final ball they're lacking, but if they get it right then there's a real aspect of danger.

Hate to say it but Liverpool vs Man united isn't a big game anymore, United ain't a big club either now. Hyped match.

    Aniu, Tanzania

Liverpool poor. Salah and Szoboszlai wasteful in the final third. Not making use of attacking the Kop end on this first half. Still waiting for that killer instinct to kick in.

  20. Man Utd 'need to show some energy!'published at 17:06 Greenwich Mean Time 17 December 2023

    Liverpool 0-0 Man Utd

    Dion Dublin
Former England striker on BBC Radio 5 Live

Liverpool have had the ball and possession for most of the first half.

I'm still not sure what Man Utd are trying to do, I don't see a pattern in how they're supposed to play.

They haven't had the ball for some time but they need to show some energy!
