That's why they're playing through Leah Galton.

She races down the left-hand side and spots Nikita Parris free in the middle of the box, but her pass is intercepted by Molly Bartrip before it can be directed towards the goal.

United are centring a lot of their play around Leah Galton, and they've had a real reliance on the left-hand side.

They haven't managed to do anything to really trouble Spurs, yet, but they're being persistent.

Manchester United work their way forwards, Spurs snatch the ball and knock it up the pitch towards Jessica Naz to try and start a break.

The hosts are focusing on trying to hit United on the counter-attack.

Maya Le Tissier spots Jayde Riviere and pings a lovely cross-field ball to the wing-back, but she can't get past the Spurs defence.

Nicely done by Le Tissier, though.

  5. England coming in for Clinton will be a 'real boost'published at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

    Helen Ward
Former Chelsea and Wales striker on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Grace Clinton is not able to play tonight and I'm sure Marc Skinner is delighted about the rule that you cannot play against your parent club.

She has been brilliant for Tottenham and forced her way into the England squad as well. I saw her play in Tottenham's game against Chelsea and I thought she was exceptional.

She's gone on to be a real key player for Tottenham this season. So that's a miss for them, but obviously having Bethany England to take her place is a real boost for them.

How much do you think Ona Batlle's absence has hurt Manchester United this season?

They've already been undone a few times at the back today and haven't had many chances going forwards.

A must win game for United to keep themselves in touch at the top of the table, too many draws early on in the season could prove very costly. Come on United!!

    Stephen, Chorley

Re Helen Ward at 18:50 - the biggest difference for Man Utd between last season and this season is the lack of Ona Batlle. Her energy, tenacity and quality in both attack and defence won them a lot of points last year

Martha Thomas runs through and Celin Bizet takes advantage after a United defender spills the ball in her direction, but the visitors manage to recover before Bizet can unleash Bethany England.

Spurs are playing a very attacking game.

Tottenham have been the most dangerous side so far, and Celin Bizet also had an early effort stopped by Mary Earps.

That England block was a definite warning for United.

    Close!

Jessice Naz breaks free on the left-hand side and launches a cross into the middle of the Manchester United box.

It's knocked back and falls to Bethany England after Mary Earps saves a Martha Thomas shot, but her effort is blocked by Maya Le Tissier.

What a way that would've been for England to start her season.

  13. 'Something not quite right in Marc Skinner's side'published at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

    Tottenham 0-0 Man Utd

Manchester United's form is surprising, isn't it? They were so good right from the start of last season, but it's been a real mixed bag for them.

One game they will look brilliant and you think 'this is the moment they are going to turn their corner', but then the next game they just don't produce.

There's something just not quite right at the moment in Marc Skinner's side. It's just quite hard to put your finger on it.

  15. 'It must have been a long two weeks for Tottenham'published at 18:46 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

    Tottenham 0-0 Man Utd

    Helen Ward
Former Chelsea and Wales striker on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

It was very disappointing for Tottenham before the break. I saw them at the start of this season and they looked a very different side from last year.

So to then lose 2-0 before the international break must have really hurt. Manchester City can do that to anyone, but it would be a really tough one to take.

The timing of it as well for the team, just before a break, it must have been a long two weeks for Tottenham. Especially for the players and staff that didn't go away with their national teams.

Man Utd boss Marc Skinner speaking to Sky Sports before the game: "Yes it does present a perfect opportunity for us [earlier results]. However it is not going to skew the way we play. There might be some more hunger in the minds of individuals knowing what happened earlier but as a collective our mind is on playing a very good team in their own back yard and knowing we have to be at our very best.

"I'd expect nothing less for the earlier result to fuel us positively in the way that we want and I expect lots of energy from us. If we do that then we will give ourselves the best chance to win the game.

"Tottenham have been playing very well, so I have no doubt that we have to be at our best tonight. I want to see an edge to us, I want us back to our biting best. I've been very clear with the players about what we must do and we have to bring the energy tonight."

On Beth England's return: "It is amazing Beth England is a great footballer and a great leader.

"I am pleased to have her back, the team want to have her on the pitch and I want to have her on the pitch. She is very helpful for me as a coach."

On Man Utd: "We played against Manchester United in a friendly just before the season started and they have so many good players - we have stay sharp and compact.

"We have to be brave enough to play our style and we will make sure we go for it."
