  2. 'If we hadn't won the gap would have been huge, now it's only four points'published at 21:12 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

    FT: Tottenham 0-4 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United manager Marc Skinner, speaking after the game: "We got the result and showed our quality. I think we dominated the game, the stats are slightly skewed in this game - their shots were speculative from far.

"We dominated them, we moved them around, we created plenty of opportunities ourselves, which we finished off four times, and I think we should have had a penalty too. That was a dominant performance from us, as dominant as you are going to get aside from a 6-0 or a 7-0.

"4-0 away from home, last game of the day, fantastic. To have that level of support behind us from the travelling fans means the world.

On the amount of goalscorers on the evening: "Three, four, I don't really care. As long as they go in, right? For me it was all about attitude tonight. The goals are part and parcel of your performance. The attitude tonight was right. That has been there this whole time but I loved that about us tonight, we wanted to take the game and we did 4-0.

On how big the results of the day are for WSL: "If we hadn't won tonight and Tottenham had, the gap would have been huge. Right now it is four points. We have two tough games ahead, one in the Continental Cup, and who knows what happens after those. But it is exciting right?

"We're not worried about what other teams do, we have to focus on our own performance and tonight we did that. That is what we have to get back to. Zoning in on us and getting back to our best, and we will destroy teams."

  4. 'We lost our head a little bit'published at 21:06 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

    FT: Tottenham 0-4 Man Utd

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur manager Robert Vilahamn, speaking to Sky Sports after the game: "First half is quite good defensive work, it was an even game in the first half.

"We protected the goal well and created counter-attacks, but they scored too many goals. They had around five shots so they are effective with their chances.

"And then we lost our head a little bit, but we played against a very good team this is where we are now and we tried to play, but we do need to work a little bit more."

On Beth England's return: "If you see how collectively we defended she is a big part of that you also see she is a good role model for the players but we need to find the link up to get the plays.

"I am happy to have her back."

On the result: "Goals effect games and confidence is in the second half if they didn't score early in the half we would have had a chance to come back into it.

"If you look at it Manchester United are a very good team and are better than us at the moment."

On facing Arsenal next week: "The difference is something we work on and in defence we need to do better in the box we have a good week in front of us and we will make sure we do our best.

"We get Grace Clinton back as well which is a good player."

  5. 'The table is incredible, any side can take points off another'published at 21:03 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

    FT: Tottenham 0-4 Man Utd

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United goalscorer Ella Toone, speaking to Sky Sports:

On the way she scored her goal: "I like scoring chips apparently! In all seriousness I saw the keeper coming out and just tried to lift the ball over her, and luckily it went in the back of the net. Always nice to get on the scoresheet.

On switching back to club after England disappointment:"It's tough to take. We had a good camp and played well across the two games and we should be proud of that, of what we have done and what we have achieved. Obviously it's not ideal, we want to go to tournaments, but you have to move on, you have to switch and switch quickly. Move on with club football because the games come thick and fast and you have to be ready.

On WSL results today: "Yeah a massive game in the league today, some big results. We watched the game earlier, the table is amazing at the moment, any team can take points off another team. It's nice to be a part of."

  6. 'It's good to get goals from all over the pitch'published at 21:02 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

    FT: Tottenham 0-4 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United goalscorer Ella Toone, speaking to Sky Sports: "We knew it was going to be difficult today. Tottenham have been a really good side this season and made it difficult for us in the first half. We showed that grit and character that we have in the team, it wasn't always pretty, but we managed to get the three points, which is the main thing.

On the half time team talk: "Just to keep sticking with it, stick with the game plan, be positive, move the ball quicker. It is always hard on pitches where the ball bobbles to get the game going but we stuck at it, made runs in behind and got the goals.

On Melvine Malard's first goal: "I don't have a clue [if she touched the ball], but we won which is the main thing. There were a few different goalscorers today and that's always nice.

On four different scorers today: "It's nice when goals come from all over the pitch. We know the depth in quality we have in the squad, we have players that can come on and change games and add goals."

  9. 'We are not the finished article'published at 20:53 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

    FT: Tottenham 0-4 Man Utd

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham captain Beth England, speaking to Sky Sports after the game: "Obviously for myself it has been a long journey, glad to be out with the team again and wish we could have done more.

"Proud for me to lead the team out as captain could not have wished for a better welcoming but I am devastated with the result."

On being substituted: "Yes I wanted to play more, the physios are doing their job and I appreciate we have a big job - I have to walk before I can run.

"I had a chance in the first half and it would have changed the dynamics of the game if I scored, but it is what it is.

"First half I thought we frustrated Man Utd and we did concede some chances but we did well.

"Basics like communication we need to work on. But they opened us up and we just conceded too many goals. It is fustrating but lots to to take from it.

"I think we are not the finished article there is a long way to go to get to the top four, off the back of the Manchester City [result] and another 4-0 defeat today does not look good."

Once you get a certain amount of points behind your rivals you can't just rely on them to slip up, you need to be consistent in your own performances and results.

Of course Man Utd will be aiming for the title, that is what all the top sides want, but the Champions League at the very minimum will be in their sights.

If they can qualify for that competition two years in a row that would mark huge progress.

They played well tonight, did their job and that Arsenal win over Chelsea just keeps things interesting up there at the top of the table.

If Manchester United can keep this rhythm going with the right tactics and using the best of the squad available to us, then they have a real shot at winning the WSL this year! Especially since we just saw Arsenal beat Chelsea earlier today!

  15. 'Spurs need to back themselves to turn form around'published at 20:40 Greenwich Mean Time 10 December 2023

    FT: Tottenham 0-4 Man Utd

    Helen Ward
Former Chelsea and Wales striker on BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra

Tottenham will be disappointed to concede so many goals across two games and not having score themselves.

But they need to be careful not to let it get them down too much, realise the reality of the quality teams they are playing, teams that are going for the title and the Champions League.

They need to get on the training pitch, back themselves to turn this run of form around, and work on what they need to to make themselves more defensively solid going forward.

United are four goals up but are still working very hard defensively. They will not want to concede a goal, especially Mary Earps, who will be determined to secure a clean sheet.

Credit to them because it would be natural to ease off with such an advantage.
