Chelsea were frustrated in their Women's Champions League opener as a controversial penalty call and disallowed goal helped Real Madrid draw with the Blues in Group D.

Hosts Real Madrid took the lead in the 10th minute when World Cup winner OIga Carmona's effort from range deflected wickedly off Chelsea defender Millie Bright to wrong-foot goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger and fly into the net.

The visitors deservedly equalised just before half-time through Niamh Charles, who was unmarked at the back post to head in Ashley Lawrence's curling cross.

Australia forward Sam Kerr completed the turnaround when she put Chelsea ahead after 75 minutes, powerfully heading home Charles' looping cross.

But two minutes later Las Blancas were awarded a penalty, with Danish referee Frida Klarlund adjudging Jessie Fleming to have fouled Athenea del Castillo in the penalty area.

Replays showed Fleming had caught her opponent outside the box but, with no video assistant referee, Carmona took the spot-kick and buried it into the top corner.

Chelsea's Lauren James struck the crossbar in the closing stages before Charles found the net with what looked like a last-gasp winner, volleying to meet a deep cross.

The goal was quickly ruled out for offside but replays showed Charles had timed her run perfectly.

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes speaking to the media at full time about her appointment as manager of the US women's national team: "I haven't given it much thought, you can tell from my throat [hoarseness] that I have been working on our next three games. All my focus has been on tonight and then doing some work to prepare for Liverpool.

"For now my focus is here. Of course I will have communications with Twila [Kilgore] the interim head coach, but I am focused on what I am doing right now."

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes speaking to the media at full-time: "I told the players at the end, 'Don't focus on the result, focus on the performance.' All of the things we have been working towards, the style, the objectives, I saw them come out.

"Across the league we are dominating the ball but it is not about that, it is about progressing it into the right areas. For me we lacked in the finishing phase today, so we have that to work on going forward."

  5. 'She is absolutely superb, she really is'published at 22:55 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2023

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes speaking to the media at full-time on Niamh Charles: "Absolutely superb, she really is. I'm gutted for her at the end. You score a really, really good goal like that, can you imagine how frustrated she is feeling?

"She had a superb game, scored a superb winner and right now her feeling back there is frustration. But that is what she has been working towards, to reach her top level. I think there is more to come from her but she is playing really, really well."

Alberto Toril, Real Madrid coach, speaking to UEFA.com: "We are very happy with this point. They are a great opponent. Chelsea are a very strong team with a a lot of qualities.

"This helps us a bit to gain confidence in the upcoming matches. I think it’s a well-deserved point."

  7. 'Feels like a loss'published at 22:53 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2023

    FT: Real Madrid 2-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea goalscorer Niamh Charles, who had a potential 95th-minute winner incorrectly ruled out for offside, has been speaking to UEFA.com.

She said: "We controlled most of the game and can be happy with that, but obviously we are really disappointed. We came here to win the game and have just come away with a draw.

"It’s good away from home, but we really wanted to win and felt we did enough in the game to do that.

"It’s really nice to contribute, but it doesn’t feel like that at the moment because it feels like a loss."

  8. 'Two humongous decisions have gone against us'published at 22:48 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2023

    FT: Real Madrid 2-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes speaking to the media at full-time: "I think the performance was well controlled by us, especially away from home in Europe. We had so much more of the ball and it was comfortable."

On what was said to the players at half-time: "Just a tactical adjustment that we had to make - the pivots weren't carrying out a small detail there. Overall it had to be better in the final third, either the last pass or whatever it might have been.

"I think the team did better with that [in the second half]. We hit the bar as well [as the goals], we should have scored from that. We had chances, so we should be disappointed with ourselves.

"I can't remember the last time we were in a game like that when two humongous decisions like that have gone against us - that is a lot tonight."

  9. 'You can't speak to the officials'published at 22:44 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2023

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes speaking to the media at full-time.

On asking the referee for clarity at full-time: "You can't. You're not allowed to speak to the officials. Can't speak to them there [on the pitch], can't speak about it here [to the media].

"For me I am going to focus on the performance, I can only control that. Everybody saw the decisions, you don't need me to comment on them any further."

  10. Disallowed goal 'embarrassing' - Hayespublished at 22:40 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2023

    FT: Real Madrid 2-2 Chelsea

    Chelsea

Chelsea boss Emma Hayes speaking to the media at full-time: "I could see from the bench that the tackle [for the penalty decision] was outside the box. So I'm absolutely shocked that those managing the game couldn't see that.

"Of course maybe Jessie [Fleming] shouldn't lunge in that area, but it happens clearly outside the box.

"At this level when you are in control of a game and important decisions like that go against you, it makes it difficult."

On the game as a whole: "I thought we controlled the game after the first goal. Listen it was a deflection, poor to concede but not much you can do about it. Millie [Bright] goes out to block the shot and Ann [Berger] is left wrong-footed.

"I thought we dominated the game. We went 2-1 up. Then there is the free-kick that was awarded as a penalty. Then we score a really legitimate goal with Niamh Charles three or four yards onside.

"It is embarrassing. I had to check why it was disallowed; was it Niamh? No. Was it Sam [Kerr] interfering with the goalkeeper? She was about seven yards away, no way near the keeper. I cannot understand the decision whatsoever. I think we've been robbed of what was a 3-1 game."

This isn't a matter of 'VAR or not' - you just shouldn't get officiating this poor at this level in the first place.

Hayes said Chelsea were “robbed of what should have been a 3-1 game". The Chelsea manager also said the officiating was “painful”.

  17. 'It's a mess, there is no question Charles is onside'published at 22:02 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2023

    FT: Real Madrid 2-2 Chelsea

    Siobhan Chamberlain
Ex-England and Man Utd goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

There is no question that Niamh Charles is onside. She is four or five yards back from the Madrid defensive line.

The question is Sam Kerr - has she got in the line of sight of the keeper? Is she interfering with play? Personally I don't think she is.

The ball goes to the far post and Charles shoots low into the bottom corner.

It is a mess and unfortunate for Chelsea, it would have been a magical moment to get that dream finish.

She is heading to have a word with the officials in the middle of the field and after that decision it is easy to see why.

    A point apiece.

Chelsea will feel very hard done by. A controversial penalty converted by Olga Carmona, her second goal of the game, put Real level minutes after Sam Kerr had headed the London side 2-1 ahead.

Niamh Charles had earlier made it 1-1 with a powerful header and she thought she had got an injury-time winner when she volleyed in but, amid more controversy, the goal was ruled out.

    That is a terrible decision!

Charles is so far onside it is ridiculous. If I'm Emma Hayes looking back at that call, I am fuming.

Chelsea should be walking away with three points. From the angle that we have seen it isn't even close!
