Captain Millie Bright has praised Emma Hayes after her manager's departure for the USWNT job was confirmed on Tuesday. The defender joined the club two years after Hayes, and credits much of her development to the outgoing Blues boss.

"It has been a bit of a whirlwind [since the announcement]. Immediately, as a player and a person, I was devastated.

"I've been here nine years now under Em. I've learned so much - she is a mentor, a coach, a friend, a life coach, it's more than just playing football under her. That has probably been the biggest thing in taking my game to the next level.

"If you can play under a manager that long and keep thriving it's very rare.

"It has been a privilege to work with her for so long. We're so grateful and proud of what we've achieved but we have a full season ahead and that's what we're focused on."

The timing of the announcement of Emma Hayes' departure isn't great, but she is a professional and will not let it distract her from the task at hand.

Real Madrid away is probably one of the toughest games in their group so it is not ideal timing, but they are a focused and professional team.

Maybe this could be the little spur of extra motivation that they need, it could be written in the stars that they go and win it this year.

The players now know that Emma is leaving and it would be a nice fairytale ending for her and the club.

Chelsea lost 4-0 to Barcelona in the 2021 Women's Champions League final

Under manager Emma Hayes, Chelsea have lifted six Women's Super League titles, five FA Cups and two League Cups, becoming a dominant force in English football.

However the closest they have gotten to European glory is one final appearance, in 2021, which ended in heartbreak at the hands of Barcelona.

After it was confirmed yesterday that Hayes will indeed take over as United States Women's National Team boss at the end of the current season, the Blues boss is eyeing a dream ending to her time at the club.

"It would be a fairytale, of course, but I didn't grow up liking fairytales too much," Hayes said.

"I'm more practical than that but I'd like nothing more than to be in a winning position with this team."

Not sure how Emma Hayes will fare with the USWNT. There’s no denying she’s a superb manager, but there’s a huge difference in contact time between club/international football - will she have enough time to implement her playing style and deal with some pretty big egos?

Managing the United States national team is widely regarded as the biggest job in women's football - so is Emma Hayes ready for the challenge ahead?

Hayes, 47, has led Chelsea to 13 major trophies in her 11 years managing the Women's Super League side but says the "time is right" to move on.

Her widely anticipated move to the USA was confirmed on Tuesday and she will join up with the four-time world champions at the end of the season, just in time for the 2024 Olympic Games.

With a new squad to manage, a major tournament on the horizon and huge levels of expectation to fulfil, it is not an easy task for Hayes - but it is one she is more than prepared for.

"This is my club and it will always be my club," Hayes said on Friday, as she addressed the media for the first time since announcing her departure from Chelsea.

It was a moment she "hoped would never come" but personal circumstances ultimately led to Hayes' decision to call time on a successful WSL career.

As a mum to five-year-old son Harry, Hayes craves family time - particularly following the passing of her father in October - and that was the deciding factor, with international management providing more flexibility than the daily demands of club football.

"This is not a selfish decision, it's a selfless decision. It's about putting first other things in my life and I'm ready for that," said Hayes.

Emma Hayes' appointment to the US National team job is huge for both parties.

It is a loss for the WSL and for English football, because you are losing one of the greatest managers the league has ever had.

However, it is an opportunity for Emma. She has been at Chelsea near enough 12 years, she has said she feels the time is right now to leave. She has spoken about wanting to spend more time with her family, international football isn't as intense as club football.

For the USA they have had a disappointing couple of years, the Olympics are coming up. It's a perfect appointment for them.

Hayes knows the culture, she has worked out in the NWSL previously, she has a big passion to get the side back where they need to be.
