    Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea

Niamh Charles got Chelsea's goal earlier and now does well to block an effort inside her own penalty area from Athenea del Castillo, who has had a quiet night so far.

It's hard to imagine Chelsea without Emma Hayes, but it is a great opportunity for her to go and experience something different and enjoy more family time.

I can imagine what the players such as Millie Bright are feeling right now about the news, she has spent her whole time at the club under Hayes.

The good thing for the club is that she will be helping them decide who takes over. There will not be another Emma Hayes, but the club remains.

In a way you don't want another Hayes, you want someone to come in with their own ideas and project to take the club forward.

Chelsea look to their own bench too with England forward Lauren James coming on in place of Fran Kirby, who has another 63 minutes more in her rehabilitation after nine months out.

Can James prove to be the match-winner? What a player to be able to call upon.

Ashley Lawrence has defended Linda Caicedo very well on that wing so far tonight.

Caicedo wants to have time and space on the ball and the Chelsea full-back isn't giving it to her. She is harrying and rushing her, making her take decisions perhaps earlier than she would like to.

She has dealt with her very well, kept her very quiet.

I think Emma Hayes will have said at half-time that Chelsea need to close the ball down quicker, and that's what we've seen from them in these opening few minutes.

They have gone up a level, the intensity is much better.

Real Madrid have been a bit sloppy in possession, a few loose touches, so they would do well to take advantage of it.

  8. GREAT SAVE!published at 51 mins

    Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea

So close to Chelsea taking the lead. The ball is played forward and Sam Kerr has got the wrong side of Kathellen and is able to charge at the Real goal.

She gets into the penalty area and only has Misa Rodriguez to beat but the Spain international does superbly to get a hand to the strike and push the ball wide for a corner, which comes to nothing.

Real Madrid's goal came from their only attempt at goal in the first half and they are yet to win a corner.

Chelsea had 61% of the ball, six shots, five corners and got an equaliser late in the half.

Chelsea need to make sure they are more clinical in the second half.

They have had plenty of opportunities and openings in the Madrid box but have not been ruthless enough.

In these sorts of games you only get a certain amount of chances, so when they come, you need to take them.

  14. 'Both teams have more to give in second half'published at 20:52 Greenwich Mean Time 15 November 2023

    HT: Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea

    Gilly Flaherty

    It's been an interesting half.

I think both teams have been in second gear and have a lot more to give. Real Madrid started physically and were crunching into tackles, and Chelsea have since responded towards half-time.

Both goals came from defenders switching off and not tracking their players, which the managers will be disappointed with.

Hopefully it has been just a taster of what we can expect in the second half, a more exciting contest.

And that's the end of the first half.

Real, with their first sight of goal, went ahead with Olga Carmona's deflected 30-yard shot, but Chelsea gained a well-deserved leveller with Niamh Charles' powerful header just before the break.

The corner from the right is taken by Erin Cuthbert, Real Madrid can't clear their lines and it falls to Sjoeke Nusken.

The 20-yard effort is well struck but straight at Misa Rodriguez and the goalkeeper shows good handling to catch the ball.

  17. Postpublished at 45 mins

    Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea

Sandie Toletti chops down Johanna Rytting Kaneryd right on the edge of the penalty area with the France international earning a deserved yellow card.

Chance for Chelsea with the free-kick, but Toletti makes up for her error with a crucial header in the wall to send it behind for a corner.

    Good spell this for Chelsea.

  18. 'She was completely free on the back post'published at 43 mins

    Real Madrid 1-1 Chelsea

    Gilly Flaherty
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Charles was left completely unmarked on the back post, Athenea del Castillo nowhere near her.

Fleming's movement is key to that. She is playing in front of Charles on that side but because she comes so far in field off the wing, it gives Charles the space to come forward.

It's a good strong header back across goal, not much Misa can do to stop it.

    Niamh Charles

Chelsea get the equaliser their possession has deserved.

Great work from Ashley Lawrence with the assist, twisting and turning on the right side just outside the penalty area, she flights the ball to the back post and Niamh Charles, who has got well clear of her marker, has the technique to power a header in past Misa Rodriguez.

    And we're level.

    Real Madrid 1-0 Chelsea

    Gilly Flaherty
Former England defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Kathellen is one of those centre halves that is in the right place at the right time every time. She isn't one of those loud and vocal defenders, just gets about her business.

She is making it so hard for Chelsea to break through, she is just mopping up any loose balls and getting to crosses each and every time.
