  5. McNulty Q&A - Can Spurs become serious title challengers?published at 14:55 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Jonathan D: Big game for Spurs against Chelsea tonight. Do you think they can keep their good run going and become serious title challengers?

Spurs are at home so they will feel confident and Chelsea have been a mixed bag this season, to put it mildly.

They will go back to the top of the table if they win and belief has been growing all the time under manager Ange Postecoglou.

I see no reason why their good form will not be maintained overall but not sure I see them as serious title contenders. I see Spurs as being in serious contention for the top four. They look a more positive and cohesive side than they have for some time, even after losing Harry Kane.

And let’s face it, every Spurs fan would have signed up for a top four challenge in an instant before the start of the season.

  7. Pochettino needs time at Chelseapublished at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Tottenham v Chelsea (Mon, 20:00 GMT)

Mauricio Pochettino needs "time" to deliver the "solution" Chelsea need.

That's the view of Guillem Balague, who has told The Football News Show Pochettino has to re-build a winning "culture" at Stamford Bridge.

  8. McNulty Q&A - Will Spurs game be real measure of Chelsea progress under Pochettino?published at 14:49 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

    Mauricio PochettinoImage source, Getty Images

Ivan Obradovic: My team, Chelsea, go to Spurs tonight. Will this be a real measure of whether there has been any real progress under Mauricio Pochettino?

It will certainly give us an idea of where Chelsea are heading and, of course, we have the narrative of Pochettino’s return to a club where he was loved by fans.

I actually thought Chelsea were showing real signs of improvement when they drew with Arsenal, a game they should have won, but then of course they lose at home to Brentford.

I do think Chelsea are showing improvement under Pochettino but their lack of a reliable goalscorer has been hurting them. For all the scattergun transfer policy, Chelsea do have good players so it will be really interesting to see how they fare against a Spurs team doing so well.

  9. Romero a 'rock' in defencepublished at 14:47 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has praised Cristian Romero's role in a string of impressive performances by Spurs' new-look defence.

Spurs have kept four clean sheets in their first 10 Premier League matches this season, and Argentina centre-back Romero is one of the six nominees for the Premier League's player of the month award for October.

Romero has formed a solid centre-back partnership with summer signing Micky van de Ven, with that pairing regularly starting alongside full-backs Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie and in front of another summer addition - goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Postecoglou said: "The way our defensive side of the game has come together... the one constant and the rock in that [much-changed defensive unit] has been Romero, with the way he's taken on that responsibility of guiding those other guys around him so that they look assured.

"I think they feel security having him beside them, he's a big part of why we've done so well defensively.

"And there's more to come from him. He wants to improve and he works hard every day. He's a winner - you can see that in him with the way he trains and the way he plays, and that helps from a cultural perspective as well."

  10. 'It'll be really special to go back' - Pochpublished at 14:45 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Tottenham v Chelsea (Mon, 20:00 GMT)

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has spoken highly of former club Spurs in the lead up to tonight's match at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

"We are professional but at the same time we are human and we feel," said Pochettino, who was sacked by Tottenham in 2019 after five years as manager.

"It's really special to go back to a place where we created amazing memories together. It's special, I'm not going to lie. That is true.

"When we left the club it was a difficult moment but now I have the opportunity to come back and see many people who are still working there. It will be an exciting moment."

  11. Can Spurs reclaim top of the table?published at 14:41 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Manchester City's 6-1 win over Bournemouth on Saturday saw the defending champions rise to the top of the Premier League.

However, if Tottenham beat Chelsea on Monday night they will overtake Pep Guardiola's side.

Spurs are the only unbeaten team in the English top-flight this season, only dropping points in their draws with Arsenal and Brentford.

But former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino will want to right the Chelsea ship with a win over their London rivals. The Blues are currently 13th with just three wins from 10 league games this campaign.

  12. Eidevall accused of 'bullying' officialpublished at 14:39 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Gareth Taylor and Jonas EidevallImage source, Getty Images

Arsenal secured an impressive 2-1 win over Manchester City in the Women's Super League on Sunday but Manchester City boss Gareth Taylor was not happy with Gunners manager Jonas Eidevall's touchline behaviour.

Taylor accused Eidevall of bullying fourth official Melissa Burgin.

He told the BBC: "That is always the same with him because he is constantly at the fourth official and I think it is bullying.

"I am protecting the fourth official, but that's not my job."

The comments came after Eidevall had fulfilled his media duties and so was not asked about the accusation. Arsenal are thought to be disappointed by them.

Eidevall was not booked or spoken to by the referee throughout the match.

  13. McNulty Q&A - Is Raya Arteta’s big misjudgement?published at 14:37 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

    David RayaImage source, Getty Images

@win_n10 on X, formerly Twitter: Is signing David Raya Mikel Arteta’s big misjudgement?

This was perhaps something that was overlooked amid the controversy at Newcastle – David Raya was at fault for what was eventually given as a goal.

I tend to agree with the suggestion Arteta has tried to fix something that was not broken. Not many people outside Arsenal thought Aaron Ramsdale needed replacing, but Arteta did.

It creates a debate around virtually every goal Arsenal concede. Which goalkeeper would have done better? It’s pretty much unavoidable.

It would be a lot easier if Raya had proved he was an upgrade on Ramsdale, but he hasn’t. He looks nervous and the scrutiny will only get greater.

In reality, it won’t last because, assuming Ramsdale is not second choice, I do not see a keeper of his quality and ambition being happy with that. Something will have to give eventually.

At the moment, Arteta’s big decision has not been vindicated.

  14. McNukty Q&A - Is Arteta deflecting?published at 14:34 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Fin: Is Mikel Arteta deflecting from his own team's toothlessness by attacking refereeing? He was unable to actually name why Anthony Gordon's goal for Newcastle on Saturday should be disallowed.

Very good point, Fin. There has not been any specific part of the goal that has been pinpointed as to why it should have been disallowed. My view is it was a foul by Joelinton on Gabriel.

Arteta was very emotional right after the game and will have found that defeat very frustrating. I could not agree at all with his suggestion Arsenal were the team looking to win the game. Newcastle were certainly looking to win it – and did – and Arteta’s side only had one shot on target.

Not sure if he was using deflection tactics because he was just so emotional and angry.

  15. McNulty Q&A - Why did you call Havertz a 'vanity project'?published at 14:31 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

    Kai HavetzImage source, Getty Images

Lynne: You called Kai Havertz an Arteta “vanity project” Could you explain why?

I called him a vanity project because I honestly could not see any reason why Arsenal wanted him and I do not see anything extra that he brings to the team. Maybe Mikel Arteta felt he could get something more out of him on a consistent basis, succeeding where others failed.

I do think it was a misjudgement to spend £65m on him when Arsenal’s need was clearly a recognised striker to provide support for Gabriel Jesus, who we know suffers with injuries.

Maybe Havertz will prove me wrong. I know plenty of Arsenal fans share my view.

  16. McNulty Q&A - Who rejected semi-automated offsides?published at 14:29 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

@Davidthurgood on X, formerly Twitter: Any idea who voted to reject semi-automated offsides?

As I understand it, it didn’t make it on to the agenda for discussion by Premier League clubs at the annual meeting. Maybe clubs are not quite convinced about the technology as yet.

I’d love to see it but understand why the clubs would want it as reliable as possible. What we do not need is any more grey areas!!

  18. So what of this season for Hayes?published at 14:25 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Emma Hayes' departure from Chelsea has been confirmed but she still has the rest of the season with the London club to bag more trophies.

Chelsea are currently sitting top of the WSL table, three points clear after their 6-0 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

The club will also start their Women's Champions League campaign against Real Madrid in the group stage on 15 November.

There will also be the Women's FA Cup and the Continental League Cup.

  19. 'Winning is in Hayes' blood'published at 14:24 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

    Lianne Sanderson
Former England footballer on BBC Radio 5 Live

I have always felt like it was like Pep Guardiola at Manchester City, everything has to come to an end at some point. But seeing a club without a certain manager doesn't really sit right does it? It's not something you think about.

Emma Hayes was my coach at Arsenal in 2007, she was the assistant when we won the quadruple, so Emma has always had winning in her blood.

One trophy she is desperate to win is the Champions League with Chelsea. It is something they have come close to but she needs a fresh challenge.

She has taken them as far as she probably can, every single year they bring in top quality players and when you don't think they can get any better they seem to.

Emma Hayes is an 'icon of English football' - Nedum Onuoha

The silverware Emma Hayes has won during her 11-year tenure has thrust her into the limelight, but her influence at Chelsea will be felt far beyond the white lines of the football pitch she teaches in.

During her WSL career, Hayes explored every possible avenue to achieve success, using science and research to delve into areas which had not yet been looked at - constantly challenging the league, her club and her staff to improve.

She has been a spokesperson for women's health, advocating for research on menstrual cycle patterns, encouraging studies on the relationships between female footballers and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries, and pushing for education in nutrition.
