Man City v Young Boys (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

Since the resumption after the October international break, Manchester City have got themselves on a familiar roll.

Four successive wins, with 14 goals scored.

On a weekend where Arsenal, Liverpool and Aston Villa have all dropped points, even with Tottenham able to reclaim top spot if they beat Chelsea tonight, there is an ominous feeling about them sitting at the head of the Premier League.

Given the effort he says was expended to win the Treble last term, manager Pep Guardiola is delighted with his players' attitude in the early weeks of the campaign.

"In training sessions and meetings and the approach to the game everyone is there," he said.

"Everyone is going to be incredibly involved and compete with each other. After 11 fixtures, we are top of the table and are one game away from qualifying in the Champions League.

"For the club, it is really good. It means we are still consistent."

There's two cases for not awarding Newcastle's goal. The ball is very clearly over the line, plus it is a clear shove in the penalty area. If anything, it's a free kick for Arsenal. This is what VAR is there for, obvious errors. VAR should be improving the game, not ruining it. For arguably the best league in the world to be saddled with this, it's become an embarrassment. Maybe Sepp Blatter had a point about VAR.

  9. Guardiola wants Man City players to be 'angry'published at 08:23 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Manager Pep Guardiola has also said he believes it is a good sign if his Manchester City players are "angry" at being left out of the starting line-up.

Jeremy Doku scored and provided four assists in the 6-1 win against Bournemouth on Saturday.

The winger was on the bench for last week's win at Manchester United, with Jack Grealish preferred, but roles were reversed when the Cherries visited.

"I want Jack [Grealish] angry and I want him to play good," Guardiola said.

"And then Doku - be angry that he hasn't played the last two games. This is the way to maintain the consistency at that level."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola will speak to the media later ahead of his side's Champions League encounter with Young Boys.

Erling Haaland's fitness is bound to be a subject that comes up given the Norwegian had to be replaced at half-time in Saturday's 6-1 win against Bournemouth due to an ankle strain.

Haaland's absence clearly didn't have much effect on City at the weekend and with a win required to seal qualification for the last-16 with two games to spare, Guardiola could be forgiven looking ahead to Sunday's trip to Chelsea.

But the City boss is not having any of it.

"When he plays, I have the feeling something is going to happen in the box," he said.

    "Of course, he is important.

"I want Erling on the pitch. Erling would have played the second half (against Bournemouth)."

"The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better.

"PGMOL urgently needs to address the standard of officiating and focus on action which moves us all on from retrospective analysis, attempted explanations and apologies.

Here is some more on that story, after Arsenal called for "urgent" action on refereeing standards as the club backed Mikel Arteta's comments following Saturday's 1-0 Premier League defeat at Newcastle.

Gunners boss Arteta said the decision to allow Newcastle's goal was "embarrassing" and a "disgrace".

Three areas around Anthony Gordon's goal were checked by the video assistant referee.

Arsenal said players, coaches and supporters all "deserve better".

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has also been speaking about his sacking by Tottenham.

He said he holds no animosity and praised Spurs chairman Daniel Levy for doing an "amazing" job.

Pochettino, 51, took Tottenham to their first Champions League final in 2019 before being sacked five months later.

Chelsea visit Premier League leaders Tottenham tonight and the Argentine was not worried about receiving a negative reaction from the home fans.

"I am going to accept what they will show," he said.

After guiding Southampton to eighth in the Premier League in 2013-14, Pochettino was appointed Tottenham manager in May 2014 and was in charge for five and a half years.

"I didn't decide to leave," he added. "We parted ways because I was sacked. But it's not a criticism to the club. That is a difference, we didn't decide to leave. Maybe [we could be] still there."
