Darwin Nunez certainly had a day to forget in front of goal against Luton.

Liverpool's Uruguay forward went closest to breaking the deadlock with a dipping first-half shot that clipped the Hatters' crossbar, but he was unable to convert several other opportunities and blazed over after Mohamed Salah nodded the ball to him in the six-yard box.

Former Premier League midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker: "There is no excuse for Darwin Nunez to miss an open goal. If you're a top-class striker at Liverpool, there is no excuse for missing that."

The Telegraph's Luke Edwards added: "I agree that Nunez had a bit of a stinker. If you want to be brutal, he's cost them the three points there."

  3. Everton look like a Dyche team - Nevinpublished at 10:45 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

    Everton

"Everton now look like an utter Sean Dyche team," former Everton winger Pat Nevin told BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast. "Exactly what Burnley were like at their very, very best.

"He has got them playing that way and with that level of commitment.

"You can say that and it sounds easy to do, but have a look around the league at how many managers are struggling to get their team playing in their image.

"He's got them playing in his image, and when they play in that image they usually survive."

  4. McNulty Q&A - Have Everton turned a corner?published at 10:42 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

@StuieHayllor on X, formerly Twitter: Have Everton turned a corner?

Bit early to say on that one but there has undoubtedly been a real improvement in both performances and the way they look a solid and organised team now.

The return of Dominic Calvert-Lewin to full fitness has been massive for them because he gives Everton a focal point and a goal threat while young defender Jarrad Branthwaite has been outstanding since coming into the team alongside James Tarkowski. The midfield also has a better look about it with James Garner, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Amadou Onana in there as well. You can see a shape and an identity, which they have lacked so often.

Everton are looking hard to beat and disciplined, which is a sign of the work manager Sean Dyche has been putting in.

  5. 'I think football is bringing a slice of joy to him at this time' - Alissonpublished at 10:39 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson spoke about Luis Diaz after the player secured a late equaliser against Luton Town on Sunday.

Diaz has been dealing with the kidnap of his father in recent weeks.

"I think not many people can imagine what he has going on now - even us," Alisson told Sky Sports after the 1-1 draw.

"We are close to him of course, we are supporting him, we feel his pain, but for him it is a different level.

"Football sometimes in dark moments can bring joy to people, can bring joy to somebody who is struggling, and I think football is bringing a slice of joy to him at this time."

Luis Diaz came off the bench to salvage a point for Liverpool with a stoppage-time goal at Luton in his first match since his parents were kidnapped in Colombia.

Diaz's father remains missing, and the forward lifted his shirt to show a message of "freedom for papa" after heading in Harvey Elliott's cross five minutes into added time.

He later issued a statementcalling for those holding his father to release him "immediately".

The 26-year-old former Porto player had last featured in a Liverpool squad 10 days ago, but manager Jurgen Klopp said before this match that Diaz "wanted to be part of the team".

  7. McNulty Q&A - tragedy chantspublished at 10:22 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Robert McLaren, Glasgow: Do you think it's time that the football authorities and the police took the incidents of "tragedy chants" more seriously and on a par with racist and homophobic chants? The Luton Town supporters were an embarrassment to their club yesterday.

Hi Robert, I didn’t see the game yesterday but have seen the reports. Commenting in general, I think this is now starting to be taken far more seriously, as it should be. We saw the joint message from Erik ten Hag and Jurgen Klopp before Manchester United and Liverpool met last season on the subject of “tragedy chanting” and we saw Manchester City take action against two supporters who chanted about the death of Sir Bobby Charlton, banning them from Etihad Stadium and referring the matter to the police.

Strong action is needed against these individuals to get the message across and I do think it is starting to have an impact.

  8. Tragedy chants condemnedpublished at 10:19 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said anyone involved in "tragedy chanting" should be ashamed of themselves.

Ex-Reds defender Jamie Carragher accused a section of Luton fans of chants that indirectly referenced the Hillsborough disaster during Sunday's 1-1 draw.

Klopp, who said he did not hear the chants himself, commented: "Shame on everyone who said it."

Carragher told Sky Sports: "We're better than that."

  9. McNulty Q&A - Can Arsenal be punished for their statement?published at 10:10 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

VAR graphic on a scoreboardImage source, Getty Images

@andy_emmers on X, formerly Twitter: Can Arsenal as a club be punished for supporting Mikel Arteta's comments on the refereeing decisions?

Hard to see what punishment could be inflicted on them should the FA choose to have a look at their statement but they were very unequivocal in their support for Arteta.

I was at St James’ Park and I have never seen three things checked by VAR before a goal was given. It was all faintly farcical.

On the decision itself, I would have disallowed the goal for a foul by Joelinton on Gabriel. I do think Arteta and Arsenal had a case there – although they have not been specific in their complaint, it just seems to be a general one.

  10. Arsenal's VAR problempublished at 10:06 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

    Simon Stone
    BBC Sport

Arsenal and Mikel Arteta are clearly unhappy at Newcastle's goal on Saturday evening.

The issue for VAR was twofold. There was no conclusive camera angle to rule on the ball being out of play - they have to be 100% sure to overturn on-field decision - and the number of bodies around the incident meant it was impossible to know whether there was an offside.

The fact Joelinton wasn't the scorer meant the handball issue also became a matter of opinion, ditto the Brazilian's 'push' on Gabriel and whether it was enough to force the Arsenal defender to the floor.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb talks a lot about most decisions being subjective and the chances are if the referee had made a different decision in either of these, it wouldn't have been overturned.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil says he has "given up on referees"

Vicky Gaskin, Wirral: Is the Wolves manager Gary O’Neil right to be so upset with officials this season?

I have a lot of sympathy for him, Vicky. I do think Wolves have been on the rough end of a few decisions this season. I did not think Sheffield United’s winner in stoppage time on Saturday was a penalty. I felt they were hard done by.

On Arteta and VAR, we all know that if the boot was on the other foot he'd be saying there is no issue at all and if VAR couldn't unequivocally rule against them on any of the three issues, then it has to allow the goal. Anyone that thinks otherwise needs to take their blinkers off. Yes it's unsatisfactory that we can't be certain on these things, but the refs and VAR could only work with the tools they've got. Luke Edwards at the Telegraph (9.31) is spot on. They've now doubled down on this criticism of VAR (which is technically a match official) and really that ought to be punished.

I think, for me, Mikel Arteta has truly shown us who he is now. You learn a lot about someone when they are under great pressure. If you look at what is happening in the Premier League, if Tottenham win [on Monday] they are top. That is their noisy neighbours doing and playing well.

I understand why the club came out [with the statement]... I don't feel it is to put referees under more pressure. It's the fact that you have a manager of one of the biggest clubs, you have a product called the Premier League and your manager has gone out there and said this isn't the best league in the world. It's an embarrassment for the club itself as well as the manager.

So you put a statement out to back the manager but in a club statement they are saying the Premier League is the best league in the world with the best coaches.

VAR has ruined the beautiful game. There is no point celebrating a goal until VAR has been looked at. You can excuse a ref mistake in normal play but not when they take 5 minutes and still get it wrong.

    Nedum Onuoha
Former Manchester City defender on the Football Daily podcast

I don't understand the point of the statement because I thought in some ways Arteta was the statement [after the game], no one asked them for a statement.

I don't understand it's true value, it felt quite firm at the start and then they were kissing up to Howard Webb, I didn't quite understand that.

I don't think personally it was something they needed to do but I don't know their true motives and it's only them within their space who will know that.

This is what got Mikel Arteta so hot under the collar. Here, Match of the Day's Danny Murphy and Martin Keown discuss whether VAR should have ruled out Anthony Gordan's goal that gave Newcastle a 1-0 win over Arsenal at St James' Park.

    Luke Edwards

    Media caption,

Newcastle 1-0 Arsenal: Arteta labels VAR outcome 'embarrassing'

They [VAR] tried three different ways to rule that goal out. They did three separate checks, they could not find conclusive evidence to rule that goal out. I think that had to stand. The ball wasn't conclusively out of play, it wasn't a conclusive foul by Joelinton and Anthony Gordon was behind Joelinton so it couldn't have been offside.

What I am embarrassed about, ashamed about, what I feel sick about is the statement Arsenal have put out. I thought Arteta went over the top.

It's the oldest trick in the book, distract from the fact Arsenal had one shot on target. They couldn't make in-roads against an injury-depleted Newcastle defence, they had plenty of the ball and didn't do much with it.

VAR is not the issue. The incompetence of our professional referees is. If the referees enforced the rules correctly then VAR would work seamlessly, like it does in other countries that have competent refs.

On the Football Daily podcast, which you can listen to in full here, a range of former players and journalists have had their say on the situation.

We have a few different perspectives coming up now...
