  1. Hayes to United States is 'worst kept secret'published at 14:19 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

    Lianne Sanderson
Former England footballer on BBC Radio 5 Live

Back to Emma Hayes, and former England forward Lianne Sanderson told BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast that the Chelsea's manager's winning formula puts her in a strong position to land the United States job:

"This job [USWNT] is a dream job for any coach, it's the best job in the world probably, not just lucrative money-wise but in general," she said.

"The USWNT are in an interesting spot after being knocked out in the round of 16 in the World Cup, they have won the World Cup four times before. They are in a weird transitional phase but Emma Hayes knows how to win, she is the best at putting together the best squad, she knows how to communicate.

"I think it is an exciting time. It hasn't been confirmed yet but it's the worst kept secret that everyone knows about."

  2. It's important we test ourselves - Southgatepublished at 14:14 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

    England

England manager Gareth Southgate, whose side have already qualified for the 2024 European Championships in Germany, said he is looking forward to two strong friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in March to aid their preparations.

"It is important we take every opportunity to test ourselves against top opposition," he said.

Brazil were last at Wembley in 2017, when the two sides played out a goalless draw in what was their 26th meeting.

The Three Lions will play their final two Euro qualifiers next week, hosting Malta at Wembley on Friday, 17 November, before travelling to North Macedonia on Monday, 20 November.

Southgate added: "Getting two positive results is essential if we are to make sure of being top seeds in the EURO draw next month.

"We can’t afford to think the job is done as there is still work to do, while every second for us together in camp counts if we are to give ourselves the best chance of success next summer.”

Vlatko Andonovski was sacked in the summer following USWNT's early exit at the World Cup.

Manchester City youngster Rico Lewis just spoke really well to the media.

He was asked if there was one thing that has happened off the pitch that shows how much life has changed for him over the past 12 months.

"Trying to shop for food at the Co-op or Tesco and getting asked for a picture," he said.

"I don't mind it. You dream of being a footballer."

    Manchester City

Here are Rico Lewis' closing thought on making progress in the first team: "It was definitely a shock. When I was 16 you come up and train and do the tactical sessions with the team, even that in itself is special for everyone. You get to see what the elite players are doing. Spiralling from that I had opportunities to train with them and I've been very fortunate to go on a pre-season tour with them. From there it was just amazing to see how quickly it folds out. It's not like someone comes up to you and says 'now you are with the first team', it's more natural. From the pre-season tour it was focusing on myself."

On whether he thinks he will be able to make the England squad for the 2024 Euros: "It's a dream, every player wants to play in a big tournament for their country, but I am just focusing on what I can do to better myself. If that comes with it, it comes with it. It's not something I am focusing on. There are so many things I can get better at so, first of all, I will focus on myself."

On asking other England players what international duty is like: "Of course, when they come back from and international break I ask them what it's like and how it is different to here. Any information I can get I will use as it will give me an idea of how I can get there."

  8. 'Walker has helped me a lot'published at 13:40 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Man City v Young Boys (Tue, 20:00)

    Manchester City

Manchester City defender Rico Lewis on players who have helped him: "I think definitely Kyle [Walker]. When I came in I was always playing full-back and whenever we were in a tactical meeting I was always stood next to him, so he was giving me little pointers here and there and that has helped me a lot. I don't really need much information or too much at once, it was just little things that he saw that can improve me. I can take anything onboard from him, he is one of the best full-backs to ever play in the Premier League."

On Kyle Walker's captaincy: "I think he has always been a captain, whether that is with the armband or without. I think definitely this year he has taken more on his shoulders and you can see in the way he plays he has so much passion anyway that he fits the role. I think it was a no-brainer he was going to be captain this year, him or Kevin [de Bruyne]. I think most players in the team have that leadership quality that anyone could be the captain."

  9. 'You can be punished very easily for minor mistakes'published at 13:35 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Man City v Young Boys (Tue, 20:00)

    Manchester City

More from Rico Lewis on being targeted by opposition players: "I think that happens to a lot of young players. They see a younger player and it is an easier target for them and it's a way to get into another player's head. For me you can take it as a compliment and you can't let it affect your game much. I just have to carry on playing as I know I need to play."

On the biggest thing he has had to learn: "I think it's hard to say one thing in particular. There are so many things I have learned, whether that's from Pep or any of the players. I think it's just keeping focused 100% of the time because comparing men's football to academy football you can be punished very easily for minor mistakes in men's football. Just keeping laser focused and having confidence within yourself to do what you know yu can do in games."

  10. McNulty Q&A - Why do players continue to scream at referees?published at 13:33 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Start Attwell surrounded by Newcastle and ArsenalImage source, Getty Images

Ian: Why do players keep screaming at referees when they have been told not to? Newcastle had four players booked for shouting at referees. Look at the kids on Sunday mornings. They see that and they try it on.

There was meant to be a clampdown on this but I see no evidence of it. Stuart Attwell did not have a great game at Newcastle. Not sure anyone would have criticised him had he sent off Kai Havertz for his challenge on Sean Longstaff or Bruno Guimaraes for an elbow on Jorginho.

He was not helped, however, by the number of times he was surrounded by players of both sides and it needs to stop. I’ve also been at games this season where the fourth official has been in almost constant dialogue with one manager or another.

I would heartily approve of managers being told they would be cautioned if they approached the fourth official and if players were booked for harassing the referee. In an ideal world, only the captain should speak to the referee but we all know that won’t be happening.

Rico Lewis on manager Pep Guardiola's comments, saying he is one of the best young players he has coached: "It's quite difficult to comprehend that someone like that is saying something about yourself, especially for me. I have watched all of Pep's teams growing up and all the players he has worked with. Obviously, it is an amazing comment but for me I just have to continue doing what I do and playing the best I can."

On what he has done with his winners medals: "They are still hung up on the side of my wardrobe, I need to find a better place for them. When anyone comes round they want to see them so I keep them out."

On mementos from his first season: "We have all the miniature trophies from all the trophies we've won. But the main thing for me is the shirts, scoring my first goal. I have kept a shirt for every kit we have worn. Anything that I could hold onto in the first season I will hold onto for the rest of my life."

  12. 'It's impossible not to develop as a player at Man City'published at 13:19 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Man City v Young Boys (Tue, 20:00 GMT)

    Manchester City

Rico Lewis at a news conferenceImage source, Getty Images

Manchester City's Rico Lewis is asked if he feels different since growing into a first-team player at the club: "I'd say in terms of being a person I would say I am the same. In terms of a player I am around the best manager, the best players in the world, it's almost impossible not to develop as a player. Whether you're playing or not, training every day with the best people you are going to develop yourself."

On the dressing room and being around people like Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne: "I think at first it is difficult, you get very star struck. You go from watching them on TV to sitting next to them in a changing room, it's quite amazing. After a while you get to speak to them and they are normal people, just like everyone else. They are really nice too, to me they have been so welcoming. For me, it's been a pretty easy transition from someone I watched on TV to someone I can speak to."

  13. McNulty Q&A - Can Doku perform against bigger teams?published at 13:16 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

@bluefish2303 on X, formerly Twitter: What a performance by Jeremy Doku vs Bournemouth and thanks largely to a change in philosophy by Pep re: ball retention. Do you think he'll be able to perform against the bigger teams?

Doku has looked electric from the moment he arrived at Manchester City, helped by Pep Guardiola telling him not to be too “shy.” He certainly isn’t. He has even managed to give City an added dimension with his searing pace.

He is a quality player and I do not see any reason why he will not perform against the bigger teams.

    Manchester City

More from Pep Guardiola on the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia, which takes place from 12-22 December: "We've never been there as you had to win the Champions League, first time we have done it. I think the players [will be ready]. I have been there a few times before, the first game is so tricky. People talk about the final but I struggled, with Barcelona it was not easy to do it. The first against an Argentine team was so difficult, we won in 1992... We will go there and prepare because for us it is a dream."

Manchester City's first match in the competition will be on 19 December against either Mexico's Club Leon or Japan's Urawa Red Diamonds.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was asked if he has an angry changing room: "No. The mood in the team is the best I can remember for many, many years. It's really good, it's a joy to manage this group of players."

On Jeremy Doku and if he plans to play him on the right-hand side: "I am not planning that. I know he can do it."

More from Pep Guardiola on Croatia defender Josko Gvardiol's form since his summer move to Manchester City from RB Leipzig: "Perfect, we knew he was an incredible person. He can be [used] as a central defender. We decided to play him in a back four and play at full-back offensively and defensively. He is incredibly openminded to listen and see what we want to do. He is just 21 and I am really pleased. At every training session he is an incredible professional."

On the chance to qualify for the Champions League knockout stages with a win against Young Boys: "We have to try tomorrow to finish. We have the opportunity to qualify for the next stage and it means a lot for the club."

  19. VAR is 'different' in Champions League - Guardiolapublished at 12:47 Greenwich Mean Time 6 November 2023

Man City v Young Boys (Tue, 20:00)

    Manchester City

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola on VAR in the Premier League and whether he has noticed differences to VAR in Champions League: "It is different. The handball is different, a few things. I don't know, I have a feeling in every country there is confusion about many things. Emotions for the manager after the games is difficult, the feelings are so, so high and it's difficult to handle it. I'm talking for myself, not for Mikel [Arteta] or any other manager. It's not easy."

On whether the standard of VAR is at its worst point in the Premier League since it was introduced: "I don't know. It's a sensitive issue right now. It's difficult for the referees to. I don't know where I am in that position right now."

Luis Manuel Diaz was kidnapped at gunpoint along with his wife in Barrancas, Colombia, on 28 October.

Liverpool player Diaz has called on the kidnappers to free his father immediately and end a "painful wait".
