    England 1-0 Malta

Rashford is having a really good five minutes as he beats Joseph Mbong with pace on the left, but his cut-back doesn't find a white shirt in the middle.

Moments later and Trent Alexander-Arnold almost feeds in Bukayo Saka running in behind.

    England 1-0 Malta

Malta break upfield but Ryan Camenzuli's cross from the left has too much zip on it.

Gareth Southgate was not happy with the decision to not award Marcus Rashford a foul. The referee gives a free kick to Malta.

  4. PENALTY APPEALpublished at 53 mins

    England 1-0 Malta

Boos around Wembley again as another England penalty shout ends up with Malta being awarded a free-kick.

Phil Foden drives England forward before feeding Marcus Rashford who nutmegs Steve Borg and is then blocked off by the Malta skipper, hitting the deck.

Rashford, unlike Kane, isn't shown a yellow.

I find the online comments far more negative than anything on the pitch. England have already qualified so won't be going full throttle, plus they won't take the A-game to Malta. Also remember the last game where they outclassed Italy.

It's no Chelsea 4-4 Manchester City, that's for sure.

Marcus Rashford has looked brighter after the restart and wins England a corner, but Harry Maguire's header from the set piece loops high into the air and is claimed by Malta keeper Henry Bonello.

These international breaks are so poor and an awful break up in the season for the top tiers. Just feels like the momentum starts to build in the league then there's another break. I'd much rather the season started 3 weeks later and got all the qualifiers out the way then.

Kyle Walker's been done for pace! Paul Mbong beats him to the by-line but thankfully for England the Maltese man lacks end product and his cross is hacked away.

Wembley slowly refills as England pass the ball around the back.

What would be a good performance for Gareth Southgate's side then? Would 4-0 at full-time be a positive step forward? Or was the first half just too unforgivable?

With those changes Phil Foden, who was maybe England's most threatening player, has moved into the middle of the pitch.

I think seeing Walker and Bukayo [Saka] coming on, they're positive changes.

Owen: James Ward-Prowse must just sit and weep watching Gallagher and Alexander-Arnold start in midfield for England? I do!

England have brought on Bukayo Saka and Kyle Walker for Conor Gallagher and Fikayo Tomori.

Mark: Wow. That was a poor first half. Even by England's standards.

Tom: All of the talk at half time will inevitably be about VAR. But only because there's no actual football worth talking about.

Also in Group C, Italy are beating North Macedonia 3-0 at the break, even with Jorginho missing a penalty for the hosts.

    A collector's item that.

England, the most boring and dull football team on the planet? Can we deduct them 10 points for sending most of the nation to sleep ? Zzzzzzzzzz

It looks a little bit like they haven't played together. We have seen little glimpses but the biggest thing for me is it looks like they haven't played together. There are a few bobbles on the ball and I think it is important we just clean up our play a little bit.

England will be pleased to go in at 1-0. I think Malta have presented some challenges to England and will be quite pleased with their performance so far. I think England will come out better in the second half and hopefully score one or two more.
