I don't think I have seen an England team not understanding their roles as much as they have tonight, Players are looking around and thinking 'is this my job or your job?' Marcus Rashford doesn't know whether to track the runner and Tomori hasn't played left-back much and I am not sure they understand their roles tonight.

Steve: Putting the non penalty aside for a second, England haven't really been that good this half have they?

From the resulting corner kick Phil Foden's cross finds Harry Maguire who powerfully heads the ball just wide.

A whistle had gone for an earlier foul on a Malta defender though so it wouldn't have counted.

Harry Kane looks in great form. The ball just sticks to the striker who keeps hold of possession on the halfway line, turns his man, and sends Marcus Rashford through with a pass over the top.

The Manchester United winger though hesitates and a retreating defender knocks the ball out from under his nose and away for a corner.

I think that was good from Conor Gallagher. Good from the referee to try and allow it run and then bringing it back.

Malta had to bring him down there as England were on the break.

A second Malta player goes in the book as Matthew Guillaumier wipes out Conor Gallagher who is looking to start a counter-attack.

Moments later Trent Alexander-Arnold has a shot from range but his effort is high and wide.

Malta win a corner after Fikayo Tomori tackles Ryan Camenzuli near the sideline.

Can the visitors force an equaliser? Nope, not this time, Harry Maguire heads it away.

Jim: Kane knew what he was doing there leaving out a trailing leg - normally works for him.

Thomas: So refreshing to see a referee who realises that contact doesn't necessarily equal a foul. That was never enough to knock Kane over like that and diving is diving whether there's contact or not.

Back to the current action and England are doing a lot of sideways passing, waiting for gaps to appear.

Michael: Not only has the referee had a nightmare with that simulation call, the VAR has not seen a clear and obvious error. If you don't laugh you will cry.

Matt: That is an absolute nailed-on penalty. What on Earth is the VAR doing? Is the operator asleep?

Stevo: Why on earth is that not a VAR penalty? Football is just a joke at the moment.

It's a tricky one. The way I see it, Kane is definitely trying to "win" a penalty. But he does also get taken out.

England have to be careful, Malta look sharp on the break.

Teddy Teuma curls in a delivery from the left that's comfortably headed away by England's Marc Guehi.

We have VAR tonight, but it upholds the referee's original decision. I'm guessing it wasn't clear and obvious then.

Neil: Sitting here at Wembley thinking that Malta are playing the more progressive football - not endlessly passing it between the back four.

Marc: Are Malta really worse than 170 other teams? Either they're half decent or England are making them look that way...

My first impression was that he was looking for it but that there was contact, like all strikers do.

But there is contact and it should be a penalty kick.

Malta keeper Henry Bonello gives possession straight to Harry Kane and then takes out the Bayern Munich strike, who knocks the ball past him.

The referee, though, books Kane for diving. Boos around Wembley Stadium. England were convinced that's a penalty.
