    England 1-0 Malta

England look far likelier to score the next goal, you'd expect that.

They win a corner and it's floated towards Harry Maguire at the back post, but the Manchester United defender can't get his head to the ball.

    Conor Coady
Former England and current Leicester City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

Malta have caused a few little problems. We need to settle a little bit and control the game and get on the ball and play out from the back a little bit.

We just need to get on the ball a little bit more.

Malta are giving this match a right good go, and why wouldn't they?

They've got nothing to lose at a sold-out Wembley Stadium. The stuff of dreams.

  7. Postpublished at 20 mins

    England 1-0 Malta

A nice give and go sees Harry Kane thread a pass through to Phil Foden down the left, but the Manchester City forward's cross is straight at the Malta keeper.

At the other end Malta play some smart passes, before a long ball over the top is overhit and skids out for a throw.

  8. 'Alexander-Arnold is looking to impress in the middle'published at 20:06 Greenwich Mean Time 17 November 2023

    England 1-0 Malta

    Conor Coady
Former England and current Leicester City defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's a chance to impress, it's a chance to get on the ball and catch the eye.

Speaking to him yesterday, I think he is intrigued by the position and getting on the ball and I am excited to see him there.

And just to drive Chris' point home Kane times a brilliant run forward to help him collect a ball over the top.

The Bayern Munich striker holds things up well before slotting a pass to Trent Alexander-Arnold but again the England attack soon fizzles out.

Marcus Rashford gets on the ball and is urged to shoot by the home crowd.

Instead he passes inside to Jordan Henderson, who ends up giving it away. Two players who look out of form there.

The one thing we don't want to do in this game is get complacent. Any team in the world can hurt you. It is important that we move the ball and play out but also make sure we don't get complacent and play passes that aren't there.

Both of the last two own goals that England have benefitted from have come against Malta.

And by an odd coincidence both were also scored in the eighth minute (also Fernandino Apap in June).

Malta regroup and search for an instant fightback as Harry Maguire loses possession, allowing Paul Mbong to have a pop from range.

His shot goes well over though.

Nothing he can do about it really, but this goal was all about the touch of Phil Foden. That is absolutely outstanding.

It's not even into his feet perfectly and is one movement - he has controlled it into his path and got in behind that Malta back three. I don't think his pass was perfect but that doesn't matter, Pepe couldn't do a thing about making the contact and the goalkeeper could do nothing about it either.

  19. goal

GOAL - England 1-0 Maltapublished at 8 mins

    (Own goal) Enrico Pepe

England score with their first attack!

Phil Foden races forward, driving into the box and looks to cut the ball back to Harry Kane. His cross, though, ricochets off defender Enrico Pepe and skids beyond Malta keeper Henry Bonello and into the net.

    It's fortunate, but England lead!
