Oh it's an own goal, it looked to hit off the defender.

The bit of movement from Kane gets him ahead of the defender, and he gets a touch on it but the final decisive touch is from another North Macedonia player.

That bit of movement and quality is what England had been lacking, what an impact from Kane.

Harry Kane makes an instant impact.

This time England do equalise. A corner is swung in from Phil Foden, Kane, with his first touch, gets his head to it and it bounces in off Jani Atanasov.

    And we're level.

    It's good from England.

All of a sudden little spaces are starting to appear, the North Macedonia defensive block just not getting back into position as quickly, looking like they are starting to tire.

Stephen: Without the likes of Kane and Bellingham, and perhaps a couple of others, it’s alarming how mediocre England is.

Chris: Southgate needs to be brave here. Change shape, Kane and Palmer for Lewis & Watkins. Back three, move the ball quicker and get bodies in the box. It’s not rocket science

Oh, so we want to be a Belgium kind of Number 1 team in the world...

    Kishan., London

I know this is a meaningless match but we should be beating these guys, particularly as it makes us top seeds. It’s simply not good enough. France qualified and it didn’t stop them winning 14-0.

Hope for Kazakhstan as they have equalised against Slovenia, but Kazakhstan need another goal to qualify for their first major tournament.

It's not looking like Moldova will make it though. They're still 1-0 down to the Czech Republic, but Moldova are now down to 10 men.

Still goalless in the vital Ukraine-Italy match. Ukraine will progress with Italy dumped in the play-offs if Ukraine win.

It was clearly offside but just how long do these VAR decisions have to take? Ridiculous.

    Rob Green
Former England goalkeeper on BBC Radio 5 Live

At least this decision is factual. A clear decision for offside.

Saka's got North Macedonia's number though, he rides one, two, three challenges and then feeds the ball back across to Grealish who tapped it home from yards out.

Not sure why it took so long, it took me a matter of seconds to see on the still that Jack Grealish was just offside.

  13. DISALLOWED GOAL - Englandpublished at 20:56 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2023

    North Macedonia 1-0 England

Jack Grealish is ruled offside. He has leaned offside and it took a lot longer than it probably should've done to come up with a decision.

    North Macedonia still lead.

    Much better from England.

Excellent from Bukayo Saka, taking on and jinking past three home players and Jack Grealish taps it in.

But are England going to be denied by an offside? A nervous wait...

And we're back under way. A lot has been talked about the penalty, and yes it was massively harsh, but it was not a good England first-half performance. Just two shots on target, despite dominating the ball. Let's see if the second is any better.

Not once was the referee shown the "penalty" incident on the VAR screen at match speed. This would have shown it for what it was - an accidental coming together. These super slow-mo shots do not help their decision making process. Ridiculous call.

    HT: North Macedonia 1-0 England

Rico Lewis holds his hands up by way of apology.Image source, Getty Images

I'm wracking my brain and I cannot seem to think of how that penalty was given. All I have come to is that the decision has been made by people who have never played football before.

We got away with the Maguire one earlier, but if it had been given then you would have thought 'OK, fair enough it is his [the referee's decision].

But with the one that was actually given, Rico Lewis just jumps in the air and happens to catch the attacker with his arm. If you ask the ref to jump into the air right now he would do so using his arms, that is all Lewis is guilty of doing in that situation.

Everything that has gone wrong so far in football with VAR is encapsulated in that one decision.

It is really unfortunate for England that they are behind at half time, as they looked comfortable in that first half.

The criticism was they hadn't scored and then I've run out of words in my thesaurus to describe the awarding of the penalty. That is the only blip for England and really there was nothing that Rico Lewis could do about it.
