The possession gauge has gone to 83%. Six shots, three corner for England, no goals.

Ollie Watkins thinks he has got a shooting chance, but he has given his marker a shove. He then gets a ticking off from referee Filip Glova for shooting at goal after the whistle had gone.

England have just been so comfortable in this game, they have had possession for most of the game within the North Macedonia half.

They are trying things going forward, not all of them are working out, but the press to win the ball back is good. It looks like a matter of time before the opener.

Andy: Do England still have a specialist deadball coach? The one area of their (collective) game that has gone backwards since FIFA WC2018 in Russia is their ability to be creative around free kicks & corners.

Shaun: The only correct answer to who should be backup to Harry Kane is Ivan Toney.

Howard: Anyone know what's happened to Tammy Abraham? He seems to have completely disappeared off England's radar.

Abraham suffered an ACL injury in Roma's final game of last season. He's expected back in February, so could well be in contention for the Euro 2024 squad if he comes back firing.

England are just unable to get it to Ollie Watkins on two occasions. Jack Grealish with some lovely skill to create space on the left flank, but the Villa man can't get there and he is then again just unable to connect with Phil Foden's delicious through pass.

    Definitely a penalty - Maguire a liability!

    Deborah

Whether you think Harry is genius or awful, I think we can all agree games are more interesting with him in it.

    Andrew

Why are England faffing about with it, just play, play, play!

Harry Maguire has got away with two mistakes there. Firstly he gives the ball away and then when he tries to recover he is completely out of control, he just loses his footing and falls into Elmas.

It almost looked like he stumbled on the pitch.

    North Macedonia 0-0 England

North Macedonia want a penalty as Elif Elmas goes to ground under a challenge from Harry Maguire, who instantly wags a finger at the referee saying Elmas has made a lot of it.

    No penalty, says the ref.

Seen them given, as they say.

But it has raised the noise levels among the locals.

Re. England. Harry Kane would have had two by now. Hope I'm proved wrong but Watkins is so not Harry's replacement or back up.

    Terry

Neil: That miss by Watkins, just shows why he is not fit to even lace Kane's boots.

Let's not be too harsh on Ollie Watkins here. Any side around the world would want Harry Kane in it.

The fouls North Macedonia are making are just stunting England's build-up play in the last few minutes. It's got a bit stop-start.

And another bad challenge. Ex-Leeds man Ezgjan Alioski stands on the heel of Bukayo Saka, who is able to carry on and a bit lucky to not have been too hurt by that one. No card for Alioski either.

North Macedonia are struggling to cope here with England and resorting to some blatant fouls. Kyle Walker on the end of this one, with Jani Atanasov lucky to not see yellow.

In international football you have to take those chances.

Ollie Watkins was on the back post with nobody near him and he's missed the header.

When you are trying to work towards being Harry Kane's deputy in this squad, you think if it was him up there you'd be heading back to the halfway line for kick-off.

That's a real warning sign for North Macedonia.

If England keep going as they are, playing the ball around, rotating positions and making spaces, it will only be a matter of time before they make the breakthrough.

  15. HITS THE WOODWORK - Declan Ricepublished at 19:59 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2023

    North Macedonia 0-0 England

So close to an England opener. Declan Rice, receiving the ball from Jack Grealish, puts his laces through one and hits it sweetly from 20 yards out but it bounces off the foot of the right upright and away.

England get the ball back and Ollie Watkins, off balance, can only steer a header just wide.

England with 77% of the possession, but yet to test the home keeper. Bukayo Saka looks to change that, cutting inside from the right on to his left footed but his powerful effort is quickly charged down by Nikola Serafimov.

Happy for Kyle Walker to get to captain England. He has been a great player for so long. Well deserved.

    Micki

At right back Trent might deliver a few show reel passes but I’m just not convinced that makes him a good midfielder. He just doesn’t move the ball quickly enough.

Kyle Walker gets to the ball to send in a cross from the right deadball line, it drops to his Manchester City team-mate Jack Grealish, but there is a wall of red shirts in front of him, so England recycle the ball and look to come again.

It's a very tight, very narrow back five for the hosts, with four more just in front of them.

North Macedonia are so narrow defensively, they are so keen to get out to players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden, they don't want those sort of players getting on the ball for England.

England need to make the most of the spaces out wide, use the wing backs and get overloads going down the flanks.

"If you're good enough you're old enough". Just wonder if we're all too anxious to keep fast-tracking wunderkids. Of the dominant Spain team of 2008-2012 most of the senior players had been allowed to develop at u17, u19, u21, u23 etc levels...

I’m disappointed Palmer’s not starting these sort of games, although the way he’s playing for Chelsea currently - it won’t be long.
