  1. 'We were flat' - Southgate reacts to England win over Maltapublished at 19:06 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2023

If England are ever to get to world number one, they are going to have to do much better than they did against Malta (ranked 171st) on Friday.

Gareth Southgate's side did not manage a shot on target in the opening 65 minutes, although they had scored early on through a fortunate own goal, before Harry Kane added a second in the 75th minute, finishing off a lovely team passing move in one of the few bright moments of the night.

Watch how Southgate reacted afterwards, saying England were "flat".

  2. England target world number one rankingpublished at 19:03 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2023

North Macedonia v England (19:45 GMT)

England boss Gareth Southgate has challenged his team to become the top-ranked side in the world.

The Three Lions could leapfrog Brazil into third place when the latest update is announced next week, although Gareth Southgate has aims to reach the summit.

"If you're going to be the top-ranked team, there's no room for sloppiness or casualness," said Southgate.

"If we're going to be a top team then the level of performance has got to be spot on every time."

The highest place England have ever reached in the rankings is third, on two occasions, from August–September 2012 and then September–October 2021.

A completely pointless game and another chance for Saka and Rice to get injured. International football is a pain.

I know England are playing and that's rightly the focus of the live chat, but surely a quick shout out for Kazakhstan and Moldova who are both one win away from qualifying. Good luck to them tonight - and Ukraine of course!

  5. Will England be among the top seeds for Euro 2024 draw?published at 18:52 Greenwich Mean Time 20 November 2023

North Macedonia v England (19:45 GMT)

    Probably.

Six nations will be top seeded for the Euro 2024 draw with Germany one of them automatically, while the other five are decided based on their performances in qualifying.

Four of those five are already known - Portugal, France, Spain and Belgium.

England will be among the top seeds if they avoid defeat tonight, but even if they lose, the only nations that could replace them - Turkey or Denmark - would need to hit double figures in their matches against Wales and Northern Ireland respectively.

Scotland will be in the third pot of seeds so we could see a repeat of Euro 2020 when England and Scotland were drawn in the same group, with it ending 0-0 at Wembley.

A total of 24 nations will be playing at Euro 2024, in six groups of four with the top two in each group and the four best third-placers moving into the last 16.

Three nations will qualify for Euro 2024 tonight, with another one finding out their fate tomorrow.

The last three places won't be confirmed until March when the play-offs take place.

Group C sees a massive match and Ukraine will qualify if they beat Italy tonight, with any other result taking the Italians through instead.

Czech Republic also only need a point in their home Group E game against Moldova, who will qualify for their first major competition if they get a shock win.

Group H sees the winner of Slovenia v Kazakhstan qualifying, although Slovenia will be through if that one ends in a draw.

Tomorrow, Croatia will qualify from Group D if they win at home to Armenia. If they don't, that could open the door for Wales, although Rob Page's side will need to beat already-qualified Turkey in Cardiff.

There's no need for any final match stress in this qualifying campaign for England.

The Three Lions are heading to Germany for Euro 2024 and doing so as group winners after six victories and one draw from their first seven matches.

Gareth Southgate's side thrashed North Macedonia 7-0 earlier in the campaign, so can England end qualifying with another win and another impressive performance?
