It looks a long way back for Port Vale at half-time if they are to get any joy out of this one.
In contrast to the buzzing mood of pre-match optimism, it has all gone a bit flat in Burslem.
Middlesbrough have so far done a very clinical job on the Valiants.
From 1 to 11, there doesn't actually look that big a difference between the two sides. But, where it matters most, Boro look a cut above.

Boy does Armando Broja take it well, he thinks he has broken the offside trap.
That will give him confidence.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
Chelsea sub Armando Broja has the ball in the back of the net but it won't count.
The Albania striker makes his run too early to reach Cole Palmer's through ball so he is offside. A lovely dinked finish over Martin Dubravka though.

Great play from Sterling, Palmer and Gallagher. Nice axis for Southgate to use.

Big intervention there from Bruno Guimaraes to block Raheem Sterling and he turned to pump his fists in celebration towards the Newcastle United fans in The Shed end.

No-one has gone down and no signs that anyone wants to come off.
Enzo Fernandez has headed down the tunnel and followed by who I am guessing is a physio. It is not a like-for-like change. Whatever it is, I think it is an attacking thinking substitute - trying to get back into the game.
Looking at both benches, Mauricio Pochettino has been stood on the sideline all match and I have not seen Eddie Howe at all. Jason Tindall is doing the most of the shouting.
Port Vale 0-2 Middlesbrough
And that's the break. Port Vale were blown away by Boro who scored twice in the opening 23 minutes.
The visitors have played the perfect away performance. The pressure is off them now.
Port Vale 0-2 Middlesbrough
Port Vale are having a good spell. The home side have half a penalty shout as the ball seems to hit Morgan Rogers's arm in the box, but referee Michael Salisbury waves play on.
It seems to be the right call, his arm looked by his side. Possession eventually fizzles out when Conor Grant's cross is cleared away.
Everton 0-1 Fulham
Fulham are halfway towards making the semi-finals of the League Cup for the first time in their history.
They lead through Michael Keane's own goal after 41 minutes. Everton have had chances but Dwight McNeil and James Tarkowski have both seen good attempts miss the goal.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
Raheem Sterling goes down in the box... no penalty. And no VAR so we don't have to wonder if play will be stopped in a minute for a review.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
That great save from Martin Dubravka I mentioned a couple of minutes ago... was actually a brilliant block by Bruno Guimaraes just in front of his keeper.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
Early sub for Chelsea. Striker Armando Broja replaces midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
Port Vale 0-2 Middlesbrough
Into first-half injury time in Stoke. Four minutes added on.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka revealed this week that he got a Carabao Cup winners' medal last season... even though his team lost in the final.
He spent half the season on loan at Manchester United, playing a couple of League Cup games there. He went back to Newcastle in January and was ineligible for the cup final where the two sides met.
But because he'd played for the Red Devils in the competition that season he got a medal.

The overload was good. It is a brilliant run from Antonee Robinson, it goes in off Michael Keane's near shoulder.
It is unfortunate but a good counter-attack from Fulham.

That has silenced the home supporters.
No real conviction in the defending there from Michael Keane and he ends up diverting the ball into his own net.
Port Vale 0-2 Middlesbrough
Almost 3-0 Middlesbrough!
A defence splitting pass looks certain to find Emmanuel Latte Lath in the middle, but Port Vale stopper Connor Ripley is quick off his line to play sweeper-keeper and eliminate any danger.
No flies on Ripley who looks to have shaken off his earlier knock.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
What a save from Martin Dubravka to keep out Raheem Sterling's shot from close range. Top reaction stop from the Newcastle goalkeeper.
Chelsea 0-1 Newcastle
Chelsea's best chance to equalise. Raheem Sterling plays a one-two with Moises Caicedo and tries to pass a ball into the far bottom corner but it rolls just wide.
