Fulham boss Marco Silva says that a hectic January will be tough for side but it is a challenge that they are pleased to have.

After taking on Championship strugglers Rotherham in the FA Cup third round this evening, Fulham have a two-legged Carabao Cup semi-final against Liverpool, with the first leg at Anfield on Wednesday.

"It's always a difficult thing but it's a great thing for us," Silva told reporters.

"We want to be successful and to be serious in all the competitions so we will have busy periods like this last month and we will have a busy January."

Speaking about the FA Cup, Silva added: "We take this competition really seriously, we showed that last season. We're proud to play in this competition. We have to respect the competition and ourselves.

“[Rotherham] have a dream and it’s an opportunity for them to come and play a Premier League side and we have to show on the pitch that we are better than them."

Wolves thumped Brentford when they met straight after Christmas, and the Bees have now lost five in a row. Their manager Thomas Frank surely can't be under pressure after the job he has done there, but I don't see them getting a result this time either.

    Sutton's prediction: 0-2

  3. 'I take joy from witnessing it'published at 18:29 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

Vincent Kompany says he has taken "immense joy" in seeing Lyle Foster return to action in recent weeks following a spell away from the game to receive treatment for a mental health issue.

He scored in Saturday's 3-2 loss at Aston Villa, after which Kompany said: "[My feeling is] immense joy very specifically for Lyle Foster's situation.

"We were dealing with a human tragedy really... such a good lad as well.

"To see him get back up, and just enjoying the game - not even the goal, just enjoying the game - being out there on the pitch with his team-mates, smiling after the game.

"For me, I can go away from being a manager, just as a human being, I'm really happy to be part of this moment.

"When you go through this at a club, as human beings, and you see him come out the other end of it, all I hope is he is going to stay like this. That's all I want. I can take a lot of joy out of witnessing it."

  4. Frank hoping 'sticky patch' endspublished at 18:27 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

Brentford boss Thomas Frank admitted his side were in a "sticky patch" and he hopes they can get out of it "as quickly as possible".

They have lost five successive matches, last winning in the Premier League on 2 December in a 3-1 win over Luton Town at home.

"It happens every year for every team in any league in the world," added Frank.

"Hopefully it is only one spell we will have this year, and we get through it as quickly as possible.

"If you analyse the games there are things in there that we need to learn.

"But we have looked at the stats and except for our goals scored, every other offensive stat has gone up from last year. It is the same thing with the defensive stats."

  5. Team news - Four changes for Brentford; Wolves missing Hwang and Ait-Nouripublished at 18:26 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Brentford v Wolves (19.15 GMT)

Thomas Frank makes four changes to the Brentford side which lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace in their last Premier League match.

Thomas Strakhosha starts in goal, while Neal Maupay comes in up front. Regular keeper Mark Flekken is rested while Yoane Wissa is at the Africa Cup of Nations with DR Congo.

Mikkel Damsgaard and Josh Dasilva also start.

Brentford XI: Strakhosha; Roerslev, Zanka, Pinnock, Collins, Norgaard; Jensen, Damsgaard, Dasilva; Maupay, Lewis-Potter.

Subs: Balcombe, Peart-Harris, Baptiste, Janelt, Yarmoluik, Olakigbe, Brierley, Adedokun, Fredrick.

Gary O'Neil meanwhile makes three changes, although two are enforced and it is an otherwise strong Wolves XI.

Hwang Hee-chan and Rayan Ait-Nouri drop out following the 3-0 win over Everton, as they are on international duty with South Korea and Algeria respectively.

Matt Doherty replaces Craig Dawson in the other change.

Wolves XI: Sa; Semedo, Bueno, Kilman; Doherty, Gomes, Doyle, Toti; Sarabia, Cunha, Bellegarde.

Fulham have got some unfinished business in the FA Cup after their meltdown against Manchester United in last season's quarter-finals and I can see Marco Silva giving it a good go again this year.

They were excellent against Arsenal, and there is a really nice balance to their team. I don't see them having many problems against Rotherham, who are managed by my old Blackburn team-mate Leam Richardson.

    Sutton's prediction: 3-0

  8. Deeney's memories of playing under 'ruthless' Silvapublished at 18:21 Greenwich Mean Time 5 January

    Football FirstsImage source, BBC Sport

Former Premier League strikers Jermain Defoe and Troy Deeney are back for a new series of their Football Firsts podcast on BBC Sounds.

In the latest episode, they reflect on the first rollockings they ever received from a manager.

Deeney, now a boss at League Two side Forest Green Rovers, was asked which manager that he played under scared him the most.

"Sean Dyche would have to be up there, but do you know who was, but it was more for his ruthlessness? Marco Silva," said Deeney.

"Small in stature, a nice guy but he'll cut you off. It's his way or no way.

"When he came in at Watford, and bear in mind I was doing alright, he wanted more pace up front which is fine. He signed Andre Gray, and he said to me: 'You're a legend, I don't want to be disrespectful, but you're slow.' And I was like: 'OK, I can't do anything about that.'

"He said: 'You're a nice guy but you're just too slow' and just walked off. It was just 'this is why he's in, deal with it'. He was just straight.

"I've got a great relationship with him now and I've been into Fulham to see him but we've never really spoken about it actually."
