Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag said he wasn't prepared to risk Luke Shaw getting injured again, which is why he took the England man off at half-time.

"Luke Shaw was a precaution," said Ten Hag.

"We know his history, too many injuries and we couldn’t take the risk.

"We don’t want to miss him for six weeks."

  4. 'We're fifth - we must remind ourselves of that'published at 19:09 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery speaking to BBC Match of the Day 2: "We deserved more. We planned the match how we could feel strong and try and have control of the game and how we could win and I think we did that. We weren't clinical today. Their goalkeeper made some very good saves and they were clinical. We had to reset and we are frustrated but we have to be positives. Manchester United are more of a contender to be where we are than us and we have a gap to them. We have to be strong in the mind and not lose our focus and focus on how we are trying to build the team and be stronger. The performance today was how we are trying to build.

"We are now fifth in the table. Now is the moment to remind us of that. If we play like tonight, we have to be positive and try and recover our way in the next few days for the game against Fulham. We lost to a very good opponent today but we've created a distance from them and our challenge is to try and be consistent between now and the end of the season."

On Jacob Ramsey: "He played a very good match. He had some chances to score a goal and maybe that is the next step that he has to do. We need him and we're very happy that he played 90 minutes today. I was wishing we would score one goal through him but we're hoping for the next match."

  5. McTominay is' an example for many players'published at 19:05 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag speaking to BBC Match of the Day 2: "I think there were many stories in this game. We started very good, fantastic pressing, but then after we scored we dropped too much and were too deep as a team. We defended as a team but I think we have to be higher because we gave them too much initiative.

"Our defenders can defend well deep. They are concentrated but you are always vulnerable in such moments, for instance with corners. It is unnecessary and also in counter attacks we made the wrong decisions and it made it a tennis match. We should control the game better.

"You always have to see when an opponent equalises at home how the game progresses. It cost them a lot of power to get an equaliser and it gave us some space and we got more possession and scored a great goal.

On Scott McTominay: "He is [a super sub] but he can also start. You have to credit a player like Scott. He is an example for many players these days. There are not many players any more who are ready for every minute they can be on the pitch. Today we have seen another example. He is always ready to come on and make a difference."

On Diogo Dalot: "Everyone gets criticism but he is a fantastic player who is developing very well. He can play in so many positions and he is improving on crosses. He can score and his defending is improving so I am very pleased with him."

  6. 'We deserved more'published at 19:04 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery talking to Sky Sports: "We did everything we planned. We controlled the game and we avoided the transitions and we didn't concede a lot of chances. We created chances but we couldn't score some clear chances. I am very proud of our work and of the players. We are playing against the mighty Manchester United but we are being more consistent in matches in the league. The result is tough for us and difficult to accept but that is football. We played like we planned and we deserved more.

"We created chances and sometimes we are being clinical and sometimes we aren't, like today. But these are the ideas that we wanted. We created through our identity and our style. Sometimes we will be clinical and sometimes we won't be. We wanted to have control of the game and avoid transitions. That was the first idea we had and we did."

  7. Villa in 'great position to achieve something special'published at 19:02 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

    Aston Villa

Aston Villa's John McGinn talking to Sky Sports: "It was a completely different performance [to their FA Cup defeat by Chelsea in midweek], a real sickener. We did more than enough to win the game. It felt like we had chance after chance in the second half and they just didn't go in. In this league you've got world-class players in the United changing room and it was one moment of sheer quality. We could have maybe defended it a bit better, but I know unfortunately that Scotty [McTominay] is great at coming in at that stage.

"We've got to remember how far we've come as a team and a club. It's my job to make sure we stick together. We've come a long way. We're in still in a great position to achieve something special. If we play like that today we'll win more games than we lose.

"I could feel us winning it [in the second half]. We had chances on the break, they were breaking but not creating chances. They had moments of quality, we were getting into great positions. We stuck to the game plan. Our supporters were getting a bit frustrated, but I think they wanted us to be up and at them. I think on another day we win this this game.

"We're at a big club, the fans are expecting. We are expecting that. It's my job to keep the team together. We don't want to blame everyone. These things happen in a season. We've had huge injuries throughout the season, it's gone under the radar and the manager doesn't make excuses. We can still achieve something special this season and today was a massive step towards that."

  8. 'We are still not where we want to be'published at 18:54 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire to BBC Match of the Day 2: “It is a really tough place to come. We started the game really well and I felt like we deserved the lead and then we probably weren’t as aggressive and as brave as we were in the first 20 minutes and allowed them back in the game.

"Our main problems came from set-plays and corners and crosses so it is something we need to work on. When we conceded we showed great spirit and fight to stick with it at a place like this that was rocking.

“You relish playing when you win. They are a good team and have shown it at Villa Park. It was relentless in the second half and we know we have players on the bench that can come on and win football matches for us.

“He [Scott McTominay] is playing a little bit higher up. He is a great finisher and we see it every day in training. He can play numerous positions. He has great timing and is a good finisher when he gets on the end of things. He made a big impact and long may it continue.

“We are not where we want to be in the league. It’s been a tough season so we knew we needed to come here and get the three points. We are still not where we want to be and we need to step up. We have got ourselves in a position where we can challenge to go and get in the top four. It is important we stick together and take this club back to where it should be.”

  9. 'We can't take any risks with' Shawpublished at 18:51 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

More from Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag: "Our set pieces were very good. Our defensive organisation in the first part was very good and we had moments on the ball we were calm but once we scored we changed our mindset but for me you must play on. You can do this at the end but not when you are dictating the first 20 minutes, you must keep going on.

"I never think about negative situations. I'm thinking positive, we have to catch up but we are not there yet. We are in a good mood and we have to keep this process going but there is so much space for improvement. There are many games left to play and we'll see what happens."

On Luke Shaw, who was taken off at half-time: "Precaution. He had some complaints and we can't take any risks with him because he's had any injuries in the past. We'll have to see how it goes in the next few days. It's not an advantage to lose him, everyone knows my philosophy to have left-footers at left centre-back and left-back. We have to make compromises and it is not to our advantage."

  10. 'We found the mentality and character to win'published at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag talking to Sky Sports: "It is a massive win for us. We've got closer and that was the aim for today. That was absolutely our target and we've done it. The way we did it, I liked it. I especially liked the first 20 minutes when we controlled the game. At 1-1 we had to fight back and we are really happy for today.

"At 1-1 you always have to see how the game progresses and I think it was really high intensity and you could see how many players were fatigued by the end. It was so open and it could go two ways but we found the mentality and character to win the game. The subs also had an impact.

"Scott [McTominay] is great. He can score many goals. He's always coming into positions to score goals. We had problems, it was too much like a tennis match, we had problems in the counter-attack. We knew Scott would get into the box and can score goals.

"The players were going for goals because they are offensive but it was better in certain situations to keep the ball, drag players out and that was the idea to bring an extra midfielder into there."

  11. Shaw substitution was 'precautionary'published at 18:45 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag says that Luke Shaw was taken off at the break as a "precautionary" measure.

We'll have more from him shortly.

Manchester United's victory was their 40th in the Premier League over Villa (won 40, drawn 13, lost five), equalling the record for most wins by a club against a single opponent:

That number also happens to be the number of times United have beaten Everton in the Premier League era.

  14. 'A top-level performance but we must repeat it now'published at 18:38 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United's Scott McTominay talking to Sky Sports: "We started really well, but they are a really good team and came back into it and caused us problems. The guys at the back were immense, particularly Harry [Maguire] and Raphael [Varane]. It was a top-level performance and a deserved win in the end.

"I feel like as long as I'm fit and healthy I can come onto the pitch and perform. I don't take it personally, I just want to come in and try and do the best I can for this. Long may it continue.

"It was an unbelievable cross to be fair, whipped with a lot of pace. I just needed it to hit my head and get it on target. Full credit to the boys, we created a lot of good chances which may go unnoticed.

"Every game you win is massive for taking a step forward and confidence for the boys. It is all positive but it is about repeating it and not getting too far ahead of ourselves when we win a few. We've got to repeat it now."

  15. McTominay 'is the match-winner again'published at 18:37 Greenwich Mean Time 11 February

FT: Aston Villa 1-2 Man Utd

    Manchester United

Manchester United defender Harry Maguire speaking to Sky Sports: "I think we started well, scored to deservedly lead and then the tempo of our pressing dropped off and we weren’t aggressive enough. We allowed them back in and we conceded from a set-play which really disappointing at a place like this.

"Great spirit and fight to come back and Scott [McTominay] is the match-winner again. It’s an amazing feeling but we’d like to make it a little more easy for ourselves.

"Scott has come on in numerous games this year and made the difference for us. We had to dig deep in the second half think we did in the end and deserved the win."
