Rugby tackle on Jota from the corner, that is somehow not a penalty.

    Joe

Jota doesn't get a pen for 'mutual holding' yet apparently gives away a freekick for the same?? Not sure how that works.

Some sustained pressure for Liverpool with a run of corners. They don't make anything from them, though, and Brentford eventually get themselves up the pitch.

Re Bill at 12:40. Winning at Brentford does not make a statement! Winning away at the likes of City etc. makes statements. Winning away at relegation candidates does not.

Powerful shot from Diogo Jota on the bounce and Mark Flekken has to tip it over the bar.

    Brentford 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool are probing around the Brentford penalty area but without creating anything of note.

Brentford then break quickly with a ball over the top for Ivan Toney. Ibrahima Konate is with him and pressure from the centre-back leads to a tame shot from Toney.

Ivan Toney takes the free-kick but it is straight at Caoimhin Kelleher.

Easy save for the Liverpool stand-in goalkeeper.

    Brentford 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool get caught out by a quick free-kick and Alexis Mac Allister brings down Ivan Toney.

Definite foul and the referee says it was just outside the box.

The replays show that was a good call. This is a very dangerous position for a free-kick for Brentford now though...

  8. CLOSE!published at 15 mins

    Brentford 0-0 Liverpool

Decent opportunity for Brentford after good link-up play between the two strikers.

Neal Maupay finds his strike partner with a clever reverse pass but Ivan Toney scuffs his left-foot shot past the post.

    Brentford 0-0 Liverpool

Liverpool win the first corner of the match after Brentford give the ball away inside their own defensive third.

Brentford clear the initial ball in but we've got a VAR check for a potential penalty as Diogo Jota appears to be wrestled to the ground.

Nothing given and on we go.

The last two years we haven't turned up at this fixture. Big game for the Reds. Winning here makes a good statement.

    Close!

Conor Bradley so nearly opens the scoring for Liverpool, bundling his way through a couple of challenges after cutting in from the right.

The stabbed effort from the young full-back is on target but Mark Flekken pushes it away.

Liverpool have started to settle now and are enjoying plenty of possession with Brentford sitting deep.

    Brentford 0-0 Liverpool

The first glimpse of Liverpool as an attacking force comes as Conor Bradley clips the ball over the top for Darwin Nunez to run on to.

The striker beats him man down the right and cuts the ball back into a dangerous area but nobody in a Liverpool shirt is there to apply the finishing touch.

    Brentford 0-0 Liverpool

This has been a very bright start from Brentford.

A good switch out to the left but Sergio Reguilon's low cross is deflected and Virgil van Dijk is able to thump the ball away.

    Brentford 0-0 Liverpool

The first chance of the game goes the way of the home side.

A quick throw down the left finds Neal Maupay, he holds it up and the ball is played through for Vitaly Janelt.

He has time and space inside the box but drags the shot well wide.

Toney for the Euros?published at 12:30 Greenwich Mean Time 17 February 2024

    Ashley Williams
Former Wales defender on BBC Radio 5 Live

I think Ivan Toney just shades it on the other England candidates to play behind Harry Kane.

Toney brings something a little different, he know what he can do well and with those second balls having someone like Ivan Toney on allows you to get a high percentage rate of winning the second ball.

I think with the quality England posses, he would be the prefect person if it is not Harry Kane to be on the pitch.

    Dion Dublin
Former England striker on Football Focus

He just stays in that number nine position. He is very intelligent as a footballer.

The best thing about Ivan Toney is that when he is through on goal and has a chance, I am backing him to score nine times out of ten. He just has that confidence.
