Harry Maguire has thanked England boss Gareth Southgate for his support as "there's loads of people who probably don't think I should be in the squad".

Maguire continues to be selected for his country despite struggling to nail down a regular starting place in Manchester United's team this season.

"I think I've been in every single squad I've been available for, I've played every competitive game that I've been available for," said the defender.

    "It gives me great confidence."

Maguire, who was given his England debut by Southgate in 2017, added: "There's loads of people out there now who probably don't think I should be in the squad.

"There's millions of people that think I should be.

"That's football and that's why it's such a great game because everyone has such a different opinion."

What does Maguire have to do, or not do, to get himself dropped from the England starting 11? Or indeed the squad full stop? We have a brilliant left sided CB sat on the bench in Branthwaite and surely these friendlies are for bedding in [better] players ahead of The Euros? That has to be more important than any result today?

Joe Gomez - Liverpool defender on returning back from England injury

Joe Gomez says returning to the England squad has closed a chapter on the "psychological toll" he suffered when he last reported for Three Lions duty.

The Liverpool defender, 26, sustained a season-ending knee injury during England training in November 2020.

"I left the training pitch in an ambulance. Leaving and not getting a chance to come back was tough to deal with. It's nice to get back in the mix and close that chapter," he said.

"At the time I was 22, being away for so long, naturally everyone gets older. You get a different outlook and perspective. You've got to be grateful to be here."

    He's on the bench today.

Gordon - Playing for Scotland was 'never thought'

Newcastle forward Anthony Gordon says playing for Scotland was "never a thought" after receiving his first call-up to the senior England squad.

The 23-year-old, who has scored 10 goals this season, is eligible for Scotland through his grandparents.

There were suggestions late last year that Scotland, who have also qualified for Euro 2024, could call him up.

"It was never a thought for me - that's no disrespect to Scotland at all," said Gordon.

"I've been tunnel vision on playing for England since I was five, six years old and nothing could ever shake that off. I would never forgive myself if I didn't get to this point.

"It's been a dream I've had since I was so young and nothing else has ever entered my mind."

England's starting striker Ollie Watkins, speaking to Channel 4: "It's against tough opposition, but I am looking forward to it. You have to make the most of it when you put an England shirt on.

"I think there is always competition in every place. There are so many good players in the squad.

"There are world-class players trying to fight for the same spot, I am just going to play my game.

"Players need to get used to how I play. I play differently to Harry Kane. It takes a bit of understanding and communication. Over time you learn to play with different players."

  12. Mainoo 'shocked and happy'published at 18:43 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March

    England v Brazil (19:00 GMT)

Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo says he did not time to think about making the England squad before his call-up for the friendlies against Brazil and Belgium.

The 18-year-old was initially named in the Under-21 squad but then added to the senior team instead.

"I was shocked and happy," Mainoo told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"It's been a whirlwind of emotions, a pretty mad couple of days.

"I think that's the end goal for the season, to get into that [Euro 2024] squad.

"But obviously I've got to focus on club football in the meantime, and hopefully that'll figure itself out."

Kobbie Mainoo is on the England bench tonight after the 18-year-old midfielder's breakthrough season for Manchester United.

He has started 14 Premier League games since November.

Former Spurs and Manchester City midfielder Michael Brown tells The Football News Show why England must remain cautious over his progress and why Gareth Southgate's best side should see Declan Rice playing the holding role in midfield on his own.

What I am looking at in this England midfield is who's the missing piece of the jigsaw?

The man at Manchester United and late arrival into the squad Kobbie Mainoo.

I can't help but think he would be the man. I wouldn't be surprised if we see him enter the pitch this evening.

He has been a revelation and a joy to watch.

An academy graduate coming into the first team squad at Man Utd and then getting his senior international call-up is stuff of dreams.

The way he skipped through Liverpool's midfield last week was enjoyable to watch.

  15. Brazil's strugglespublished at 18:34 Greenwich Mean Time 23 March

    England v Brazil (19:00 GMT)

Brazil lost more games than they won in 2023, with five defeats, three wins and a draw in nine games.

The last time they had a year like that was 1963.

In six World Cup qualifiers, they have conceded more goals (seven) than in the entire previous campaign (five in 17 games).

The come into this game on the back of three consecutive defeats. Guinea, Bolivia and Peru are the only teams they have beaten since the 2022 World Cup.

Dorival led Flamengo to the Copa Libertadores title and the Brazilian Cup in 2022 before joining Sao Paulo, whom he guided to their first Brazilian Cup last year.

The much-travelled coach has also taken charge of Atletico Mineiro, Athletico Paranaense, Internacional, Vasco da Gama, Fluminense and Palmeiras.

It was late February 2022 when Tite revealed he would be stepping down as Brazil head coach at the end of the Qatar World Cup.

That, in theory, gave the Brazilian FA (CBF) plenty of time to work on his replacement. As it turned out, though, it wasn't enough.

Since then, the Selecao have had two caretaker managers - Ramon Menezes and Fernando Diniz - and another manager they assumed had been hired and publicly announced it but wasn't - Carlo Ancelotti.

Only now will Brazil finally have in Dorival Jr a permanent manager in charge, putting an end to what was largely perceived back home as "a lost year".

"That was the result of much disorganisation and also some arrogance to believe that any coach would just come running [to take the job] because it's the Brazilian national team," former Brazil international Walter Casagrande, now a popular football pundit, told BBC Sport.

Kyle Walker and Vinicius Jr had a good battle in last season's Champions League semi-final between Manchester City and Real Madrid.

Afterwards Walker said: "I went to hug him because he tried to rainbow flick me, so it was like 'please don’t try that again, I don't want to be a meme or anything'.

"Boxers fight and have a good battle and then shake hands after and that is the respect I do have for him."

City won 5-1 on aggregate and went on to win the Champions League.

England boss Gareth Southgate said yesterday having the Three Lions on the team's shirt is "the most important thing".

"The Three Lions is our iconic symbol," he said.

"It is what distinguishes us not only from other football teams around the world but England rugby and cricket.

"In my head, if it's not a red cross on a white background then it isn't the cross of St George anyway. It's presumably some artistic take which I'm not creative enough to understand."
