If this game had been arranged for tomorrow, Brentford striker Ivan Toney would have been free to play following his eight-month ban for breaking FA gambling regulations.

Toney will instead make his comeback against Nottingham Forest on Saturday evening.

Evidently, it means he will be free to play at West Brom in the fourth round should Brentford make it through.

Wednesday, 17 January has been circled on the calendars of all Brentford supporters. The date Ivan Toney is free to play again after completing his eight-month ban for breaking FA betting rules.

His return could not come at a better time for the Bees, who, suffering a horrendous injury crisis, have lost the past five Premier League games.

We had coped admirably without Toney until early December, when we were 10th in the table after beating Luton Town.

But losing this season's top scorer Bryan Mbeumo to injury in the next game left us without both him and Toney for an extended spell for the first time since they signed.

And we have struggled.

There has been constant speculation that Toney will leave in this transfer window, but I think this is unlikely.

Brentford need him to stay to push us away from any possible danger, and Toney has said he feels he owes the club something and wants to score the goals to revive our fortunes.

Birmingham are 20th in the Championship, with Hull ninth and only one point off the play-offs.

This is only the second match for Blues since Tony Mowbray replaced the sacked Wayne Rooney after a 2-2 draw against Swansea at the weekend in Mowbray's first game in charge.

Hull missed a chance to get into the top six at the weekend, losing 2-1 at home to Norwich on Friday.

The winner of this match will be away at Championship leaders Leicester City in round four on Saturday 27 January, kick-off 3pm.

A televised trip to West Brom - with an 11.45am kick-off - on Sunday 28 January awaits the winners of this tie at Molineux.

The significance of that is clearly of more importance to one set of fans at tonight's game than the other.

When Wolves and West Brom were both in the Premier League three seasons ago, no fans were present at either game due to COVID-19.

Their last meeting in the league was in 2012 - West Brom won 5-1 at Molineux. Their last encounter in the FA Cup was in 2007, also at Molineux, with West Brom coming out on top again, 3-0.

"Last Monday we discovered who the winner of tonight's tie will be playing in next round," says Wolves boss Gary O'Neil in his programme notes.

"I know our fans were very happy with the outcome of the draw.

"We know how much a game against West Brom means to them but we cannot think about that."

A reminder that if tonight's games end all square after 90 minutes, there will be an additional 30 minutes extra-time. If teams still cannot be separated then ties will be decided by penalties.

The flags at Bolton are flying at half mast in memory of fan Iain Purslow, who suffered a fatal heart attack on Saturday.

Bolton will wear black armbands and there will be a minute's silence before kick-off. Supporters are also planning to applaud in the 71st minute, which was Iain's age.
